Some time had passed since Austin and Elena have arrived here. Since he could not move the immobile Elena, they have stayed in the same spot the whole time.
Ending up in a remote place, he had no idea where they were or even if they were still in the Western Region. He highly doubted the necklace could have transported them to a whole other continent, but it was still a possibility. For the sake of reuniting with Bram, it would be best if they were not taken too far, but that was just his wishful thinking.
With the sun setting in the distance, the first shadows began descending. The animals of the forest prepared to slumber and the sounds of chirping birds were lessoning.
Maya watched with unblinking eyes as Austin replaced Elena's bandages once again. After cleaning the bandages with the water in the pond, he was surprised to discover her wounds to have healed an unnatural amount. Since then, he had done so numerous times. By now, there was barely any blood coming out of the deep gashes on her body, whilst the small scratches seem to have already closed up. Austin knew that Elena's physical injuries were not that severe but they still should not have recovered so fast. He attributed the cause to the magic in her body.
After he finished, Austin sat down on the grass again and said to Maya, "It's going to get dark and cold soon. You should head home."
Maya, the little girl, had not left their side the entire time. It was her first time meeting someone else and she was having a lot of fun talking to Austin. Rather, due to her limited conversation skills, she did not do so much talking as listening. Seeing how Maya was interested in nature, Austin had started describing the scenery in the star constellation, and his choice turned out to be perfect. When Austin had finished speaking, her eyes were sparkling so bright they could have replaced the stars themselves.
Seeing how excited she became, Austin retold it again and again. both of them seemed to never get sick of it. Although he had used the same phrase - "a rainbow of dancing stars," many times over, the passion in his and Maya's gaze was never lost.
Maya had her lips sealed patiently when Austin was tending to Elena. She was expecting him to describe it to her again after he finished.
"Home? But..."
"Yes, home. Your brother will be worried about you. You should get going before the sun goes down." He still did not know anything about Maya apart from the fact her house was nearby and she liked looking at the water. Earlier, he tried asking her for a clue as to where they were but as expected, did not receive anything helpful. All she knew was that they were quite far away from a place with people. Whether it was a town or city, Austin had to go there first to confirm their location.
"But Maya is by herself when she leaves..." She said glancing downwards.
Austin was confused by what she said, "Your brother doesn't come home? Don't you live with him?"
Maya looked sad as she replied, "yes... but he goes away and comes back after a long time. He tells Maya to be a good girl at home. That's why I clean and eat and sleep by myself. But it's very lonely..."
'What kind of brother is that? Leaving his three-year-old sister all by herself?' Austin thought. He asked gently with a wrinkled brow, "how old is your brother?"
Maya concentrated and started counting with her fingers, murmuring the numbers one by one. "seven... eight... nine. Brother is nine years old!" Then she put six of her fingers down and added, "and Maya is three years old!"
Austin nearly laughed out loud because of how silly she was, but it was the most adorable thing he had ever seen. 'You already said... why do you like showing off your age so much,' he secretly thought.
"Only nine years old... Then do you know why he goes away for long times?"
"No, Maya doesn't know... but Maya is always worried about him because he comes back looking weird."
Austin's eyes turned serious, he asked with curiosity, "weird? what do you mean Maya?"
"I... don't know. But he sometimes looks like Auntie." She pointed at the wounds on Elena's body.
Austin was momentarily shocked and went into deep thought.
Seeing how serious Austin was looking, Maya became nervous. "But it's ok! Brother loves Maya a lot. Maya wants to grow up quickly to help him!" She declared with her innocent, childish voice.
"I see. Maya really is a good girl." Austin smiled at her.
Maya showed a happy smile and was about to agree when a sneeze interrupted her, "achoo!" A chilly wind blew past, making her shiver and cross her arms together. It was the result of the sun setting and night arriving.
Austin stood up. "Maya, can you bring me those sticks next to you? I will tell you some more stories after."
"Really?" Maya said excitedly and hurriedly picked up the twigs and sticks by her feet, dropping it down in front of Austin. When she brought her head up, she suddenly felt a hot wind warming her body and blowing the dirt off her clothes.
Austin proceeded to move all the sticks near Elena. Then, he pointed his palm towards them and a weak flame shot out, creating a fire. Maya, with gaping eyes, watched everything Austin just did, seeing the colors dance around his body.
"Wh-wh-wh" Maya's mouth was wide open. She was trying to talk but could not get the words out.
"That was Magic," Austin answered her question. Clearly, she had no idea Magic existed in this world. Living by herself without anyone to talk to, there was probably a lot she didn't know and had never seen before. Feeling pity for her, Austin wanted to show her something cool, anticipating that it would catch her interest. And sure enough, it did. After making the fire, he then pointed his palm upwards, grinning at Maya. "Watch this." Light bolts came flying out one after another. Had anyone else seen this, they would have coughed up blood in disbelief that the Light Attribute was being used for a show.
Using his exquisite control over the spell, Austin intertwined the bolts together and it magically formed into the shape of a star. The radiance was brilliantly blinding in the darkness, showing a breathtaking display. One after another, Austin created more shining white stars to surround Maya.
Maya was at a loss for words. The light was reflected like moonlight into the clear pond next to them, illuminating a small colorful world.
