In a neighborhood of Orogun are two little houses almost facing each other, and very close together with a footpath separating them. One of these belongs to Akanji and the other to Iya Agba, his next– door neighbour. It was ten o 'clock in the morning when Akanji comes out of his house.

Akanji: [Yawning] So, it is morning already

How time flies

[At this juncture, a voice is heard from the backyard of Iya-agba singing]

Voice: Ole o le gbe'lu wa

Ole o le gbe'lu wa

Aago meje l'awa nji

Aago mewa l'ole nji

Ole o le gbe'lu wa

[Akanji is standing at the entrance of his house staring angrily at the direction where the voice is coming from, then Iya – agba emerges from the backyard where she has been busy doing some things. As she sights Akanji, who is looking angrily at her, she greets him.]

Iya – Agba: Good morning Akanji

[Akanji, still staring at her with anger refuses to answer]

Iya – Agba: I am greeting you, good morning

Akanji: [he retorts] Don't greet me!

Look woman, you have started again. I don't want any trouble from you this morning!

Iya-Agba: [Pretending not to understand his feelings] What happened? Have I done anything wrong?

Akani: [cuts in] Shut up! Alabosi! Iya – Aje!

Witch! Look, you can't kill me the way you killed your son. I am not so cheap.

Iya Agba: [Shouting] Just find a work to do! Your mates have all gone to their places of

work and others have gone to farm. Yours is to sleep all day like a lazy man

Akanji: [interjects] What's your concern? Is it not work I'm preparing for?

Iya – Agba: [cuts in] You are lying. I know as you are going out, you are heading to Sidi's joint

to drink palm wine.

Akanji: What concerns you? Is it not my money?

Iya Agba: Which money? You? [Pointing at him.

Then she staggers around laughing and clapping her hands to make jest of him]. You are a debtor, onigbese! You drink on credit I don't know why…

[As she continues to talk, Akanji becomes furious]

Akanji: [angrily] If I enter this house and come back to meet you outside again you will be a dead woman [The woman ignores him and continues to make jest of him. Then he dashes inside and suddenly comes out with a dane – gun. The woman on sighting him exclaimed and runs inside her little house. Akanji cocks the gun, aims and fires a shot, but misses.]
