27 ACT EIGHT: Scene 1

Inside Akanji's house, in his sitting room, he has just returned from his trip, which took a while. He is met by Risi as he enters the sitting room. He a little friendly now that he has a master plan to relocate Sule to another place. He gets a cold bath as usual and later takes his super for he arrived late in the evening.

However, the remaining part of the day is not as promising as he earlier thinks due to what happened later in the night. It is exactly what happened the night he discovered the evil act of his wife. Akanji could not understand the decision of his wife in choosing his own driver as the right person. But the fact was that Sule was the first person Risi could have married if not for her mother's refusal. It is him that first took the heart of Risi in the village where she together with her parents were living before they left for Orogun. In fact it is because of him that they left their former place for Orogun. The reason being that Risi's mother dislike Sule so much because he was poor and as she saw the love of the two growing stronger, the only thing she could do was to make her husband change their residence in order to cut the relationship. It was the pain of this denial that made Sule to also look for greener pasture in the city.

Unfortunately, all this is not revealed to Akanji though he knows quite well that the love between him and his wife is not actually founded on real love but on materialism.

As he stands at the doorstep, he is deeply lost in his thought so he decides to break the rule laid down by the herbalist. He moves straight ahead to the room where he kept the ritual pot, gets hold of it, looks up and down, and then smashed it on the ground. Immediately, he feels a pain in his manhood and so grips it suddenly with his two hands. He agonized a little and after a while, he feels a relief. His manhood has been restored. He feels like a resurrected corpse.

With the new turn of things, his first thought is to break the door locked behind the two ingrates inside but later decides to keep all noise and trouble till the next morning when he'll perfectly deal with the two. So, he walks angrily but determinedly back into his room leaving behind pieces of the broken pot with its content splashed on the ground.

The next morning, his wife made a great effort to stir his already worn-out body. He wakes up and manages to sit up in bed with revenge ringing in his mind. But unfortunately, it is another tragedy for him as he finds it difficult to open his eyes. He has gone blind. He requests for water to rinse his face but all to no avail. After much struggle, he remembers his action the previous night and the instruction of the herbalist. It is then he knew he is to remain blind for the rest of his life. He could no longer think of revenge but knew surely he is to see more of the humiliation and maltreatment from his own chosen rival. Surely, it is exactly the way he expects. The two culprits feel a greater sense of freedom and after a while, they thought the presence of Akanji in the house is still a problem and so decide to move him back to the village and dump him there. This they did by lying to him that he is going for a cure.
