Five days after the new Emperor and Empress's ascension, the palace received news that there a riot started in the east part of Da Cheng. Soldiers were dispatched to the part to control the situation; however, a week later, another riot started in the southern region. Worried that this incident might affect another, a new law was announced to stop the people from creating troubles.
It was said that the fight started between the people of Da Cheng and previous Qian Rong. For years, they have lived life differently, and now, because of the Emperor and Empress' union, the citizen has to learn to be tolerant and accommodate each others' life.
Living together should not be difficult if they learn to respect each other. Each of them had their ego and pride, and everyone wanted to say that they were better than the other.
To unite three countries was proven not easy. Despite the newly implemented law, every day, the court would receive bad news where people were fighting. The new Emperor and Empress spend most of their time together with the ministers to find a solution.
However, Da Cheng's court was not free from trouble. The ministers and officials consisted of the ministers from Da Cheng, Qian Rong, and Western Zhou. Like the citizens, they too had their pride and ego and won't back down and give in to each other.
Both Lu Wei and Lingchen tried not to be partial with the ministers in court. With the Retired Emperor's guidance, they tried to suppress the minister's power in court. When the time comes, the Retired Emperor gradually retreated from the court's matter to let the couple deal with the nation's affair.
After almost a year of the new Da Cheng's formation, the country continued to face trouble every day.
Others around them could not wait to see the couple to make a mistake in their administration. The others were worried that if the couple does well in their administration, Da Cheng would only prosper and grew stronger.
Da Cheng might be considered as a new country. However, Da Cheng was feared because of the size of their army. A small mistake could give others a chance to bring down the country.
During the morning court, Lu Wei noticed that his Empress has been restless, and the tapping of her fingers against the armrest became frequent. Sometimes, when he saw how Lingchen would often get anxious over the nation's court, Lu Wei would often felt guilt. After all, if they did not get married and have the countries united, they would not have to face this trouble.
As the ministers continued to shout at each other down there, Lu Wei decided to stop listening. He stretched his hands and held the Empress' hand.
The tapping immediately ceased.
Lingchen turned around to the man beside him and looked at him with her eyes wide. "What is it?" she asked with a low tone.
"You need to stop tapping your fingers like that." Lu Wei matched her tone.
"I did not-"
Her words left unfinished as she saw the way he raised his eyebrow at her. Lingchen avoided Lu Wei's gaze and heard him chuckled. She bit at her lips and decided to ignore him.
Lingchen knew that her husband was right. But, it was not as if she could stop herself. The ministers' bickering almost drove her mad. Tapping her fingers was the only way she knew to calm down.
As she turned her attention back at the ministers, Lingchen found out that they have not stopped pointing fingers at each other. Her head started to throb. Just as she was about to resume her habit, Lingchen found that she could not move her right hand. It was then that she realized that Lu Wei was still holding her hand.
"Say… Do you think that any of them would notice if we sneak out of here?"
The Empress turned again when she heard his question. "Stop being ridiculous. We're in a meeting."
"Don't tell me that you were really listening to them?" One glance at her face, Lu Wei had his answer. His eyes widened in surprise. "You really did? Are you that bored?"
"Lu Wei," she gritted her teeth. Her tone was warning him to shut up.
After the warning, Lu Wei reluctantly turned to listen to the ministers.
Earlier, the ministers were discussing the situations in their borders with neighboring countries. The Eastern Zhou had initiated an attack at Da Cheng's soldiers and tried to blame a few mountain robbers.
However, how did that discussion led them into discussing the matter regarding the next heir?
Lu Wei listened to the ministers and heard their worry that the Empress was not pregnant despite their upcoming first anniversary.
According to the ministers, both the Emperor and Empress were not that young. Other countries were watching them. Without an heir to secure the throne, the others will always find their way to harm Da Cheng.
His face turned a shade darker on this topic. To mention this matter in the court, were the ministers thinking that he was not capable?
The Empress spoke something to stop them from shifting the discussion regarding the attacks on this topic. However, one of the officials was brazen enough to suggest the Emperor and Empress take in both female and male consort.
Hearing their suggestion turned his face black with anger
The Emperor and Empress were seated on their throne, but ministers and officials disregarded their ruler. How impertinent.
Once he had enough of their bickering, Lu Wei took a stack of documents on the table and slapped it hard on the table. The hall turned silent immediately as the ministers looked up with shock.
"Are you done?" Lu Wei asked. "Are you going to continue to bicker like a five years old kid or discuss this matter like an adult?" Before the ministers could respond, Lu Wei raised a hand to stop them. "Since none of you are willing to discuss like an adult today, this court is adjourned."
Lingchen stared at her husband with her lips parted. This should be the first time that she had seen his anger. When Lu Wei stood up abruptly from the throne, Lingchen subconsciously shrunk in her seat.
"We're going," Lu Wei said as he stretched his hand to his wife.
Lingchen was still in shock to see Lu Wei's anger that she had obediently put her hand in his. He helped her up and pulled her towards the exit.
A eunuch was about to announce the Emperor and Empress' departure in his high pitched voice when the Emperor gave him a look to shut up.
Suddenly, before they reached the door, Lu Wei paused and turned to the ministers. "Tomorrow, we do not want to hear anything regarding consorts. If you wanted to continue discussing that matter, then you might as well not attend the court. I will tell you this once. In our lifetime, we will never establish a harem."
