151 The Portal

Once they entered the room and closed the door behind them, Chief Ye gave Yang Yun a look over. She caressed her chin as he continued to look at Yang Yun with a complicated gaze.

Prince Lu Wei pointed to the chair to invite their guests to sit down. His sharp gaze was on at both Yang Yun and Jiang Xiao Tian. Although his grandmother had explained that she couldn't help them, it doesn't seem like they were going to give up anytime soon. He could not understand it. It was not as if their persistence would help them to bring back the physician.

"The last time the girl was taken away, you were with her, right?" Chief Ye said as she looked at Yang Yun.

Yang Yun nodded as he sat down. "Yes."

"Back then, the girl handed the Grass to you?" Seeing the young man nodded again, the frown on her face eased a little bit.

So that was why she could detect this young man has been touched by the other world. When she first met him, Chief Ye found it strange that he had survived. It turns out that it was the girl who had picked up the Shadow Grass and he was right beside the physician, trying to stop the shifting from happening.

Luckily, he did not get sucked along with the girl.

"Your name is Yang Yun?" Chief Ye sighed and turned to Jiang Xiao Tian. " It was as I said before. I can't help you. However, our portal got destroyed during the war years ago."

Yang Yun was not contented with the chief's explanation. His wife was taken away after she harvested the herb. Surely, that must mean there was another way to open a portal.

Chief Ye chuckled as he heard Yang Yun's words. "You are right. There is another way to open up a portal. However, it is still impossible."

"Why not?" Yang Yun frowned.

"Tell me, how long did you search for the Shadow Grass? The last time you found the Grass was heaven's will. Unless if you happen to be at the right place during a solar eclipse, it is still impossible. The Shadow Grass will not appear at the same place twice."

Yang Yun's shoulder sunk as he heard Chief Ye's explanation. Is there really no other way?

Jiang Xiao Tian could feel his brother-in-law's disappointment. Earlier when he came along with Yang Yun, Jiang Xiao Tian had harbored hope that Yang Yun could perhaps convince the chief to help them find another way.

"Chief Ye," Jiang Xiao Tian spoke. "The portal that your clan has before, what kind of portal is it?"

Chief Ye closed her eyes as she thought of that portal she had last seen back when she was a lot younger. "Calling it a portal is not exactly correct. The thing that we called a portal was actually a big cherry blossom tree. It was already a few thousand years old before the royal family of Sui Country burned it down."

The three men looked at the chief with interest. Even Prince Lu Wei did not know that the portal was in fact, a tree.

"Because it was so old, we, the Nanlin tribe, believe that the cherry blossom tree was dense with some sort of power. After all, have anyone of you seen a cherry tree that bloomed in all season?" A small smile appeared on the old lady's face as she reminiscent of the past. "Back then, the tree would even blossom in winter!"

"So, the tree bloomed in all season, but why do you call it a portal?" Prince Lu Wei asked. Back when his mother was alive, she had never said anything about this strange tree.

Chief Ye turned to his grandson and laughed. "I supposed even your late mother did not know this, but Wei Wei, your great-great-grandmother was not from this world. Years ago, your great-great-grandfather witnessed how she suddenly appear from that tree. Since that time, the clan had begun to view the tree as magical."

The men turned to look at each other. Although they found it hard to believe that someone could appear out of nowhere from a tree, two of them had witnessed the physician vanishing before their eyes.

"The world where your great-great-grandmother came from sounded superior to the world we live in," Chief Ye continued. "Out of curiosity, some of the villagers would volunteer to go through the portal to take a look. However, only one-third of them came back. Young man," Chief Ye looked at Yang Yun. "Even if the tree stood tall before us, I cannot guarantee that I can send you to the world where your wife went to."

"What does it mean?" Yang Yun asked.

"According to those who had returned, they all were sent to a world different than the others. It means there may be infinite numbers of the other dimension. Some of the worlds were better than ours. Some of them were not."

Yang Yun felt his heart skipped a beat. Wherever Mingyue was, he can only hope that in the world she lives in would be better. He could not bear to think that Mingyue will have to live in a terrible world alone.

"Even if I can open the portal again, I do not know where did your wife was taken to. Unless of course, if you still have the Shadow Grass with you," Chief Ye said.

The room turned silent as each and everyone was buried in their thought.

Suddenly, Jiang Xiao Tian stood up straight. His lips parted as he gasped, and his eyes widened in surprise.

"Commander Jiang. What is wrong with you," Prince Lu Wei pulled his grandmother behind him as he was afraid that the man would do something unthinkable due to his disappointment.

"The sacrificial tree." Jiang Xiao Tian looked at the chief. "Chief Ye, what if I told you that there is another tree that is similar to the portal you have?"
