Venn was embarrassed to have so many eyes staring at him from all directions. He could sense the various emotions behind their gazes - angry, frustrated, hostility, but mostly stunned that there could be someone with absolutely no common sense.
However, it was not that he was so unaware of his surroundings that he had interrupted the appointing ceremony of General Brugvun as the grand commander of the Oni army. He had no other choice! If he does not speak his piece now, he figures it would be too late for him once the chain of command of the Oni army is finalised.
If he compares Heaven Descent to a normal game, then with the end of the appointing ceremony, it would also spell the end of the game cutscene. It would be fine in most cases, but the important thing was that he could not afford to let the game's story end that way.
He had given a lot of thoughts behind the objectives of the quest that he was given by Lilith. The objective was to liberate the Oni Clan from the goblins.
However, the mission was vague. There are multiple ways that he could approach the quest. Be it through military or diplomatic methods, he was confident that he could make use of his game knowledge to find the most appropriate solution to complete the quest.
But after attending the war meeting, he discovered that his way of thinking was too optimistic. When he figured out that the time limit notified by the system to complete the quest and the timing of the all-out assault of the Blackwater castle by the Oni clan coincided, he quickly realised his mistake.
There was no other way to complete the quest! He needed to be present in the battle against the goblins eight days later to liberate the Oni Clan. That battle would be the key to completing the quest.
But the thing is, he is too weak! He needed to get stronger, and fast! He knew of many different ways to do so, but he had to rely on the power of the others, and that was why he needed the command of a small troop. Without that, everything would end for him.
In an unfamiliar place like the Oni clan, the places where he could make use of his massive in-game knowledge was too limited. Thus, he could only rely on his other advantage that he had at this moment. And that was Lilith! Like how he uses Granhiert as a front, he is going to do the same thing again!
Making up his mind, he continued talking, this time, brimming with unfound confidence.
"Before you reject my request, let me remind you all that I came here at the request of Lilith! Although I am quite weak, it doesn't matter! Lilith and I share a certain special relationship with each other so it will definitely sadden her if I encounter any unforeseen peril in the upcoming siege against the goblins. As such, I strongly demand bodyguards to protect my safety. If you Onis do not grant my request, I will report to Lilith when I return!"
"What?"
"How preposterous of him!"
"What a shameless human! To think we let him participate in this meeting!"
The voices of the crowd instantly echoed throughout the tent , all of them were condemning Venn's outrageous request. Even Ysera was looking at him with disappointed eyes.
Although Venn was embarrassed from listening to the comments, he stuck it out and stared down at those who made comments at him until they went quiet.
"If I'm not embarrassed, then the ones who are embarrassed are the others!" He reminded himself of this famous saying.
Judging from General Brugvun, Ysera and the elders' reactions, he knew that his position was too weak to command any respect from them, and as such, he fabricated a false relationship with Lilith. Only then could they have granted his request.
But even so, the Brugvun elder calmly rejected his request after asking the crowd to quiet down.
"Lord Night Raid. You don't have to worry about your safety. You can just remain here when the war breaks out. With the high walls of Kersaru to protect you, you are in perfectly safe hands."
"I am sad to reject your kind proposal. That simply cannot do. I'm a new member under Lilith's wings in the organisation, and was sent here to participate and help you guys in defeating the goblins. Simply put, I'm here to collect my share of accolades for my future in the organisation. If I am exposed that I did nothing for my mission, my future would be destroyed! I have to participate in the war, and there must be enough troops to be my bodyguards! It would be even better if I'm allowed to stay behind at the battlefield as well!"
Venn said agitatedly. As he spoke, more and more of his saliva spilled at Nigyo Brugvun's old, detestable face. Fortunately, he was smart and quick-witted enough to counter the crafty suggestion of the old man.
"Lord Venn, Ysera has troops to spare in my command. How many troops are you looking at?" Right at this moment with Nigyo Brugvun in a dilemma, Ysera spoke. She did not know what Venn had planned, but she wanted to grant Venn's request as she had given him her trust back in the manor. Although Venn's words and actions were shameless, she decided to trust him. Not because of the pill he swallowed, but because of the brightness in his eyes.
"Four hundred will be ideal." Venn put up four fingers. The more the merrier.
"No way!" Upon hearing Venn's reasonable number, General Brugvun jumped up and violently rejected Venn. This outsider had ruined his perfect appointment ceremony and is now stating such an unreasonable demand. Normally he would tear him into pieces with his bare hands, but because of Lilith, he couldn't and as such, he wanted to cough up blood.
"As the grand commander of the upcoming war with the goblins, there is no way I will grant your request. Ysera's Shuten troops are one of the best in the clan in terms of battle prowess, giving you even one of them will heavily affect my battle plan, so you can forget that wishful thinking of yours."
"Then, how about the militias?" Ysera suggested it to Venn.
