"Caleb, honey…" Kai Xin patted the little boy's hand when he kept glaring at DX. He had been glaring at him since they left the orphanage.
Since Kai Xin craved for burgers and it was also one of Caleb's favorite food, DX brought them to one of the best western restaurants in the area. Even though the place was packed, DX managed to get them a private room without having to wait.
After the waiter took their orders, Kai Xin noticed that Caleb was staring and making faces at DX while the man merely ignored him.
Even though DX was confused as to why he deserved this treatment from the little human sitting between him and Kai Xin, he did not bother to do anything to stop him.
When Caleb turned to look up at her, she signed, "Caleb, what's wrong?"
"Bad man!" Caleb said loudly as he pointed at DX.
"Caleb, DX is not a bad man," signed Kai Xin as she explained to him. She gave DX a quick glance before signing, "He was born that way. He cannot help but look mean."
Towards DX, she hissed, "Smile a little will you?"
"He made Mama cry…" Caleb signed. When DX raised an eyebrow at him, the little boy got down from his chair and hid behind Kai Xin. He formed guns with his fingers and shot at DX before shouting, "Die! Die!"
Kai Xin laughed and pulled the boy from the back of her chair so that he was standing next to her. She then picked him up and placed him on her laps.
"Caleb. Don't be mean to Papa Du. He's not mean, and what are you talking about? He did not make me cry," signed Kai Xin patiently.
Not wanting DX to know what they were talking about, Caleb signed, "I saw you cry. He made you cry."
Kai Xin knocked on the boy's head lightly and said sternly as she signed, "Caleb, use speech. You need to practice...And listen to me, ok? Papa Du did not make me cry. He's the man I love. Can you be nicer to him for me?"
Caleb narrowed his eyes at DX who was just sitting there and typing on his phone. Letting out a loud sigh, he nodded.
When their food finally arrived, Caleb had completely forgotten about DX and focused solely on his food. Kai Xin allowed him to order anything he wanted and so, he ordered a huge Wagyu burger with curly fries made from organic potatoes as well as a cholate milkshakes made from Godiva.
"What's with him?" asked DX when he saw that Caleb took off his hearing aid and placed it at the side.
"He's a little afraid of strangers. Don't think too much about it," replied Kai Xin.
"He's quite close to you."
"I guess…" Kai Xin patted Caleb on the head fondly. When the little boy glanced up at her with sauces all over his mouth, she chuckled and wiped it off for him. She then signed to tell him to eat slowly.
Looking at DX, Kai Xin continued, "He was abandoned at the orphanage three years ago. Apparently, because of his loss of hearing, his parents felt that it would take a lot of money to raise him...and they just left him there because of that."
DX glanced at the little boy who was drinking his chocolate milkshake quietly. The glass was bigger than his head and he had to kneel on the chair to get to the straw.
Even though DX did not show any expression on his face, he thought that Caleb was quite cute when he was not scowling at him.
After taking a bite of her burger, Kai Xin continued, "I think he was the closest to Tian Le because of that. Of all the kids in the orphanage, only the two of them were abandoned by their parents. They are almost inseparable!"
As he watched the little boy eating happily, he felt bad for him.
"What's Tian Le story?" asked DX before taking a bite of his medium-rare steak.
Kai Xin smiled. She was surprised that DX remembered Tian Le. Then again, he remembered everything and everyone who was connected to her.
"Tian Le...He was transferred over to Zi Han orphanage not long after I moved over. He was abandoned at birth by his parents at the orphanage near my high school. I used to volunteer there, you know...Taking care of the kids and whatnot...Because he was born not long after Zi Han...I sort of…"
She felt bad to admit it. However, when DX reached over to tap her hand, she continued, "I sort of starting to treat him as if he is Zi Han...What I cannot do with my son, I did with him. You know, I gave him his name. Tian Le [1]. Just like what my mother wishes for me when she named me, I hope he would be happy everyday. Back then, I would visit him whenever I could and we become really close to each other…"
She looked up at DX and smiled, "His first word was Mum. I have never taught him that. No one did. I think he learned from watching TV and he believed that I am his Mum…But it wasn't always easy…"
"Why?" asked DX.
"It's hard to explain to him why I cannot stay with him at night. It's also hard to see him cry whenever I have to leave...He eventually realized that I am not really his mother, but he still calls me Mum...and I feel guilty about it because he keeps rejecting potential parents. He said he is afraid that he would be unable to see me, and I have to admit that I have the same fear as well."
DX nodded. A woman who lost her child and a child who had no parents. It was easy to see why they easily bonded with each other.
"Maybe I can think of something..." thought DX before taking a sip of the red wine. Even though he cannot help every orphaned child, at least he can help some of them.
