Head Manager Han offered to stay with Han Ye and advised DX to bring Kai Xin back before she got sick.
After all, she was pregnant and being in a stressful environment would be bad for her. Furthermore, if it was unnecessary, it would be better for a pregnant woman to stay away from the hospital.
Despite her insistence to stay, DX refused to give in and forcefully carried her back to the car. Once she was strapped to her seat, she remembered about her baby and calmed down.
On the way back, she cocked her head as she looked at DX and asked, "Head Manager Han is kinder than I thought. I never thought of him as someone who would take care of a stranger when it's not within his scope of work…"
"Han Ye is his brother," said DX nonchalantly as he linked his fingers with hers while keeping his eyes on the road. After what they witnessed earlier, he just wanted to keep holding her and never letting her go.
"What?!" Kai Xin gasped. She glanced at DX and thought that he was pulling her leg. He had never told her about it nor did she saw any resemblance between the two.
DX shrugged, "Han Ye is his half-brother. They have the same father."
"Wait... But Han Ye calls him Head Manager Han… and they never acted in any brotherly manner..."
"That's probably because Han Ye didn't know that they are brothers…"
"What?!"
DX smiled. He patted her head and placed his hands back on the steering wheel before explaining, "Head Manager Han is 6 years older than Han Ye. When they were very young, Head Manager Han killed their father. Apparently, their father was physically abusive toward his family... and toward Head Manager Han especially."
"... Head Manager Han's biological mother ran off when he was barely old enough to walk and his father remarried. I guess the abuse got so bad that one day, he just snapped and stabbed his father to death..."
"... Of course, he was too young to be convicted then. And given the circumstances surrounding the event, the prosecutors did not press further on this matter. Understandably, after what she went through, Han Ye's mother didn't want him near her toddler son. So, she abandoned him at an orphanage…"
Head Manager Han was unable to mix with the other kids, and he was starting to show a sociopathic tendency. He would often scare beat the hell out of the other kids, even those who were older for him. It might be because the older kids were picking on him, but his anger meant that his retaliation was a lot worse than what he received from the kids.
At one point, he nearly killed a teenage boy despite being beaten up badly.
Du Jin used to visit the orphanages that he sponsored to make sure that the caretakers were doing their job. On one of such visits, he met the young Head Manager Han, who was being punished for breaking a boy's hand.
Perhaps it was due to his exposure to the people from Shenlong House, he recognized the signs of a high functioning sociopath in the young Head Manager Han.
He did not want the kid to waste away and so, he took Head Manager Han away from the orphanage and placed him in Shenlong House so that he could be raised by people who could handle him.
For half of his adult life, Head Manager Han worked as an assassin for the Shenlong Family. When he finally saw his brother again, he decided to work in a 'normal' place.
At the end of the story, DX added, "He might be unable to feel love. He might even deny it but I'm sure that Head Manager Han could feel the bond with Han Ye. That was why he kept watching over him behind the scenes."
"Why didn't he want to tell Han Ye?" asked Kai Xin curiously.
"I've never asked, but I suspect that he thinks that it's unnecessary. His brother has his own life and he did not want to disrupt it. I think that he is content with watching over him from far away…and Kara, this should be something between us only. As my wife, you have the right to know all of these but this must be kept from everyone else."
Kai Xin nodded. She understood that people had their own reasons.
DX was afraid that Kai Xin might view him negatively and so, he had never told her the complete truth of how Han Ye came to work for him.
She thought that he took pity of Han Ye and that was why he helped him.
However, the truth was not so much based on sentimental feelings than a man's meticulous calculation.
That day, when Han Ye came to Hotel W and threw himself in front of DX's car, DX was about to get someone to get rid of him.
He was a much colder man back then and he could care less about a sniveling stranger who was kneeling in front of him. After all, why should he help a man who had nothing to do with him?
It was only when Head Manager Han spoke up and asked for his help that DX relented. To him, a person's loyalty was worth more than any amount of money he could possibly spend.
By helping Han Ye, he would get the loyalty of both Han Ye and Head Manager Han. It was a good trade-off and a risk that DX felt worthy enough for him to take.
He was right in taking the risk. Both the brothers were loyal to him throughout the years and they were both capable employees. No matter how hard he was on them, both of them continued to stay by his side.
"What are you thinking about?" asked Kai Xin when she noticed that he was deep in thoughts.
DX glanced at her and when she smiled back at him, he lifted her hand and kissed it briefly.
"What's that for?" asked Kai Xin with a smile.
"For loving me," answered DX truthfully. They had each other and that was all he wanted for this lifetime.
