The old woman, clad in a coarse blouse, with a flowery turban on her head and some dried herbs in her hands, turned her head at the sound of call.
“Here is Chen’er.” The old woman was a little stunned, then she turned her head. Seeing Xiao Chen coming up, she quickly put down herbs and walked up to Xiao Chen, with a smile in her eyes. The woman’s temperament was extraordinary. You could spot dignity between her eyebrows though what she wore was solely cloth.
“You are becoming thin. Why don’t you take good care of yourself?” The woman touched Xiao Chen’s cheek, her eyes being full of loving and doting.
“My wet nurse, why are you making medicine again?” Xiao Chen looked at the herbal medicine on the ground and frowned discontentedly.
“Alas… I am too idle so I find something to do anyway.” Smiling faintly, the woman noticed Jing Yue standing not far away. With a slight twinkle in her eyes, she looked aside at Xiao Chen and asked, “And this is?”
“Wet nurse, she’s Jing Yue, my fiancée.” Xiao Chen went over and took Jing Yue to his side, saying to the woman.
“Greetings to my lady.” Jing Yue extended her respect in some restrained manner, feeling extremely worried.
So after a long while, Xiao Chen had intended to take her meet his parent!
But to Jing Yue’s surprise, Xiao Chen had a wet nurse, and it appeared that Xiao and her were quite intimate.
“Finally you let your wife show up.” The woman’s eyes immediately lit up. She warmly inquired after Jing Yue’s well-being, while ignoring Xiao Chen. After a long talk, Jing learned Xiao was brought up by the woman when he was a child.
“Chen’er was a pretty naughty boy who had brought me a lot of troubles.” Clasping Jing’s hands and sitting on the stone chair on the side, the woman talked about Xiao’s childhood stories. Jing devoured them, echoing her now and then. Their laughs made Xiao, who was ladling out water, slightly raised the corner of his mouth.
Throughout the day, Jing Yue found Xiao Chen’s another character, who was gentle and considerate with a smile on his face. He did such chores as watering flowers and cleaning the room awfully merrily, unlike what Jing knew before.
They two didn’t leave until the weary sun began to sink.
“You don’t have to see me in the future. I’m fine here.” The woman held Xiao Chen’s hands, giving a reluctant goodbye. She always wanted to see Xiao Chen though, she exhorted him not to come often.
“Wet nurse, Xiao Chen is occupied but I’m free,” said Jing Yue who had smiling brows, “I will visit you frequently, and Xiao Chen will be delighted too.”
“Alright, aright…” The relieved woman gripped Jing’s hands, then stood outside the palace gate, watching Xiao and Jing’s carriage drifting away. Without their sight, she sighed softly, walked into the palace and closed the gate.
On the carriage, Jing Yue still kept the shallow smile, while Xiao Chen slowly took a breath and turned to Jing Yue, “I’m sorry that I took you to see my wet nurse without your consent.”
“Really? Without my consent?” Looking at Xiao, Jing blinked her eyes, saying, “I didn’t expect you to be that naughty when young. I heard interesting stories of our celebrated Ninth Imperial Uncle of Dongqing Kingdom. This trip to the palace is worth it.”
