The moment Gu Yan came back to her apartment, she lay on the sofa and remained motionless. It seemed that she was a person without a soul.
Manla opened the door and turned on the light only to find someone was lying on the sofa. She got frightened, throwing the fruits in her hands.
Manla rubbed her eyes and found out that was Gu Yan. She got relieved but grumbled, “You’re scaring the hell out of me. Why don’t you switch on the lights? You know what? I won’t let you off the hook if you…”
Before finishing the words, Manla noticed Gu Yan’s empty eyes that were like a pool of stagnant water.
Manla wasn’t able to describe Gu Yan’s eyes which were full of hopelessness, sorrow and helplessness. She couldn’t see any thirst for this world from her eyes. In Gu Yan’s eyes, the world was like deathly stillness.
Manla didn’t know what terrible things brought the vivacious and positive person away? The accident a few years ago did not tear her down. How tough she was!
“But how does she come to this now? What happened to her?” Manla couldn’t figure this out. But she speculated that it might be Mo Yichen and Mo Xiangyan who had something to do with that. Only these two people could make her be like this.
Manla squatted down and hugged Gu Yan without a word, touching her face softly.
No one knew how long it took. Gu Yan finally said hoarsely, “They don’t allow me to see Xiangyan and I can’t reach Chen. What should I do now?”
Manla sighed silently and thought to herself, “I am right. But how can this happen? I know Mo Yichen who has true feelings to Yan. As for Xiangyan, he likes her most. But now things are different. What’s wrong?”
“Yan, you know that Mo Yichen often buries himself in work and he has to be responsible for everything of his company. It’s normal for him to be out of touch sometimes. Maybe he is busy finishing his work and coming back to see you. Your studio is a small firm, but you are still busy for your studio. You can imagine how busy Mo Yichen is.” Manla comforted her softly.
Gu Yan looked up at Manla and said in an unusually calm way, “Manla, my studio went belly-up.”
“Belly-up? How could it be possible? Didn’t I hear from you that the studio was getting better and better a few days ago? What is going on?” Said Manla who was full of surprise.
Gu Yan’s eyes filled with tears. Finally she couldn’t pretend to be tough anymore and burst into crying…
Gu Yan got tired and stopped crying after a long time. Manla helped her up and poured her a glass of water.
Gu Yan shook her head and said, “I don’t want to drink.”
To be honest, Manla got relieved when she saw Gu Yan’s tears. Although she knew Gu Yan was still suffering, she understood that it was better to cry when one was sad than to say nothing. Her tears told Manla that she was a person, not a walking corpse.
Thinking Gu Yan’s hopeless eyes, Manla still had a lingering fear.
Manla put the cup in front of Gu Yan and hugged her, making Gu Yan’s head rest on her shoulder. She said nothing but gave Gu Yan silent comfort.
Manla didn’t force Gu Yan to talk to her because she knew that would make her feel worse. She knew that when Gu Yan overcame her sorrow and pain, she would tell her. So she just waited.
In a few moments, Gu Yan started to say, “My studio went belly-up. The project of south of the city got in trouble. The project plan leaked from my studio. We got little money to run the studio after making reparations to my partner, so I had no other option but to declare bankruptcy.”
Manla was shocked and thought that there must be a hidden traitor in the studio, but she didn’t say it and just listened to Gu Yan carefully.
“All we know now is a new comer of our studio did that, or we can say that he came in as a spy at the very beginning. However, we can’t get in touch with him.”
“Yan, call the police. Police will help.” Manla grinded her teeth in anger and said.
“It’s no use calling the police because I don’t get any evidence to prove that he is a hidden traitor. In addition, he left the liquidated damages for the labor contract when he left, so I can’t prosecute him.” Gu Yan shook her head and said.
Manla sighed and thought that it seemed that Gu Yan trusted the new employee so much that she gave him the opportunity to be accessible to such an important document. Even if Gu Yan did not tell her how sad she was, Manla knew that the betrayal of this new employee was devastating to Gu Yan.
Gu Yan seemed to read her mind and said, “I don’t blame anyone because I am the first to be blamed for I failed to expose his plot. It doesn’t matter. What is important is that I can’t reach Chen. What’s worse, I am not allowed to see Xiangyan.”
“Maybe he is just busy with his work as usual. This has happened before.” Manla said.
Gu Yan closed her eyes and her voice was shaking, “No, it’s different. He would call me even when he was on a business trip… On top of that, Aunt Li doesn’t allow me to see Xiangyan.”
Manla thought, “Xiangyan must be the last straw that broke the Gu Yan’s back. Poor parents! When she is in greatest need of comfort, she just wants to see her son even if Xiangyan doesn’t know Gu Yan is his mom. How pathetic she is for she is unable to be satisfied with even such a small demand!”
A good idea came to Manla. She said, “Yan, do you know Xiangyan’s teacher?”
Gu Yan murmured, “Teacher… Yes, teacher! Xiangyan’s teacher must know me because I have picked him up from school before. I can contact his teacher!”
Gu Yan perked up immediately and her eyes were full of hope.
Manla was a little worried because she was afraid Li Yunhong might have thought of that, too. But what if Li Yunhong ignored this? It was worth to give it a shot.
Although this possibility was low, Gu Yan would not give up as long as there was some hope.
However, Manla quietly sighed and didn’t say it out.
Gu Yan looked at Manla and said happily, “Manla, thank you. I don’t know what to do without you. You are my real friend. Thank you for reminding me.”
Manla forced herself to smile.
