Chapter 54 - A Sunset To Remember

Jess felt Noah turned rigid when from speaking Chinese he shifted to English and his tone of voice became icy cold. He lifted her away from his lap, and he stood up, all the while, a tirade of angry words streamed out of his mouth.

She remembered the time when they were at Midland Hotel and Noah was also on the phone spouting angry words at someone he was talking to on the telephone.

Anger built up from her chest as she fastened her brassiere and button up her polo shirt up to the last button. She tucked in her shirt back to her jeans and was about to step away from Noah when he pulled her into his arms, kiss her cheek, and mouthed the words "sorry".

She gave him a tight smile and removed his hands from her shoulder. She heard another round of angry words from his mouth as she walked to the end of the cliff they were on. She took a heavy sigh, as the corner of her eyes sting.

She couldn't speak Chinese and Noah probably knew about it from the information he gathered about her. Thus, he used the language conversing with the woman he was having an argument with. She knew it was a woman. His phone was near her ears that she could hear the exchange of words between him and his caller.

She cannot speak Chinese but her best friends are living in Shanghai. She learned few words from them. Noah said, 'our daughter', and from that two words, it was not difficult to deduce that he was talking to his ex-wife.

She focused her gaze on the horizon while she hugged herself. Her body was trembling in shame! When she realized that Noah was talking to his ex-wife, she felt like she needed to compete. Hence, she started kissing his neck to get his attention.

She did get a reaction from him, for she felt his manhood grew harder when he thrust his erection in her crotch. But then, he lifted her up from his lap and she was drenched with the cold reality. Noah has a family!

For her to compete with his ex-wife was just shameless. She swallowed the bitter taste of shame in her mouth, as she gagged with self-loathing. She took another deep breath and watched the sky as the sun painted it with flaming orange, as it bids goodbye.

She choked with the jumble of emotion in her chest. Shame and despair were the strongest contenders. She pulled out her phone from her jeans back pocket and took a photo of the sunset. It would be a memorable sunset, she bitterly smiled. A reminder of how insignificant she is in Noah's life.

She was still taking photos of the sunset when Noah's arms snuck on her waist. He rested his chin on the crown of her head, and murmured, "Beautiful, isn't it?"

"Hmmn."

She didn't trust herself to speak. She felt the presence of Noah behind her before she felt his warmth on her back, and his scent assaulted her senses. Her knees as well as her resolve buckled. She couldn't understand why she is so weak when it comes to Noah. A lump of frustration was stuck at the back of her throat, making it so difficult for her to breathe.

"Sorry about that," he tightened his arms around her as he pressed a gentle kiss on her temple. "It was my ex-wife…"

Before Noah could finish his words she clamped her hand on his mouth. "I don't really want to hear it." she heaved a deep sigh, "Can we just enjoy the sunset?" she fake a smile as she exhaled the air from her lungs.

Noah watched her facial expression, he reluctantly agreed. "Okay."

She didn't know how long they stood on the cliff, watching the sunset in silence. When the horizon turned dark and the city harbor in the distance light up, was the time they left.

The walked back to the car was accompanied by awkward silence. Nevertheless, Noah never let go of her hand. When she tried to pull it away, he said, it was for her safety since it was already dark and the road was unpaved.

She has no energy to complain for her mind was still muddle in confusion, -- of what does she really want from Noah. The fact that she was totally attracted to him was a given, but the pain that pierced her heart when she realized Noah was talking to her ex-wife confused her.

'For God's sake, you do not have the right!' She yelled to herself in her head. She felt like bursting into tears with the harsh truth.

With the call, Jess's mood turned sullen. And he regretted answering it in her presence. But the damage was already done. Her feelings are hurt and he has no idea how to make her feel better. No matter what his reasoning was, he would still sound like an asshole, which he is! He behaved like an asshole by letting his ex-wife get the better of him.

He opened the passenger door for her, fasten her seatbelt for her before walking to the driver's side. The sky turned dark, and the road they are on has no street lights. It's a good thing it was not his first time visiting this place.

He found this place when they acquired the land where the building of ANAT Pharma and Co is standing. He bought the land but didn't do anything with it. It served as his thinking place. And when he saw Jess earlier the day, looking frustrated and dejected, he had the strong urge to see her smile.

He glanced over his shoulder and seeing her staring at the car's window when there is nothing to see outside for they are blanketed in the dark, broke his heart.

He held her hand and brought it to his lips. He pressed a gentle kiss on the inside of her palm. He was glad that she didn't pull away from his touch.
