Jean stared at Zed. Her face was so pale. Zed could tell how horrified Jean was.
"Zed, you lied to me, didn't you?" Jean asked, her voice trembling and her eyes fixed on him.
"You know that I would never lie to you," Zed looked at Jean and sighed. "The police had to shoot them on the spot because they resisted arrest."
"No, no. That can't be! Caleb is smart. He wouldn't let his partners do that!" Jean argued, shaking her head and refusing to believe it.
"You seem to know him so well." Zed fixed his eyes on Jean. "But you should know that if his partners really trusted him, they wouldn't have been killed,"
Zed brutally reminded her.
Jean felt like falling.
The memory of Caleb's smile was still etched on her memory.
To Jean, Caleb was a smart and decent man. He just couldn't get out of his illegal work because of his so-called friends.
Jean promised to save him.
But in the end, he was still killed.
Jean burst into tears.
Zed couldn't bear to see her like this.
With a deep sigh, he took his cell phone out of his pocket and handed it to Jean. "Please stop. Look at this first."
Jean ignored him and just kept crying.
Zed smiled bitterly and sighed, "You're going to regret it if you don't look at this now, okay?"
Jean stopped crying at once to look doubtfully at Zed.
She knew Zed very well. He wouldn't say anything to fool her when she was so sad.
'Regret?
What's this about?' Jean wondered.
She looked at Zed's cellphone and immediately grabbed it when she saw what was playing.
It was a minute-long video of Caleb and the rest waving goodbye with their hands and thanking Jean. Jean figured they must have already left Imperial Capital based on the background.
Jean was excited but she looked at Zed with a puzzled look on her face, her voice trembled when she spoke, "They... Are you sure they're ok

of enemies here in Imperial Capital. They're just waiting for their chance to hurt us."
"Okay. I got it." Jean seemed to recall something so she looked at Zed seriously. "Caleb and his partners were just hired. Where is August now? Do you really have no idea where he is? Didn't Caleb and his partners leave you any useful clues before they left?"
Zed sighed, "They did give me information but by the time the police arrived at August's hiding spot, it was already empty. Someone must have tipped him off so he, along with his men, were able to escape."
"How can that be?" Jean frowned. "But Caleb and his partners are gone. How will you catch August? Won't that be difficult?"
"I don't think so," Zed said solemnly. "The entire Imperial Capital was all eyes on this whole kidnapping thing. I don't think his sole purpose was to just kidnap you. If they didn't succeed this time, they'll try again the next time. That's why I reminded you to be more careful."
"Oh, I see." She looked at Zed and promised him, "Don't worry! I'll be more careful next time."
Zed had a strange look on his face as he stared at his wife.
What he didn't tell Jean was that despite their extra efforts to be cautious, she was still kidnapped either way.
