"What?" Rena took a step back, utterly shocked. "What did you just say?"
Leena sighed, trying to keep calm. "When I went to the bathroom, I ran into Miguel and Alina. They were in a heated discussion, talking about how they were lovers in college, but that Miguel's parents opposed their relationship. This whole time, Miguel loves her, and he is practically begging her to get back together. That's it." Leena was definitely hurt deeply, but she refused to show it. She might be nothing compared to Alina, but she didn't want to let this whole situation ruin her happiness.
Rena gaped at her, at a loss for words. After a while, she asked, "How are you so calm?"
"Well, what do you propose I do?" Leena smiled bitterly.
Rena's eyes flashed crazily. "Damn it!" she cursed venomously. "You should get even with them! I won't let that bitch get away with this so easily!" She clenched her fists tightly and started to walk back to the cafe, stomping on the pavement.
"What are you doing?" Leena called after her. She had a bad feeling about this.
"I'm going to kill them! You don't deserve this!" Rena shouted, unable to contain her anger. Her eyes blazed murderously.
Leena ran after her friend and flung her arms around her, hoping she'd come back to her senses. It seemed she was all-consumed by her rage. "Rena, listen to me," Leena said seriously. "They've left already."
Rena froze, all the anger leaving her body. Instead, she was left a lifeless corpse. "Why did you let them go so easily?" she asked weakly. "Damn it! First, my boyfriend left me for some bitch. But now, my best friend's boyfriend left her for the very same bitch! I just can't take it!" she whined.
Leena seemed to have run out of patience at this point. She lowered her head and said coldly, "Rena, please just stop. I'm in a bad mood. I don't want to hear any of this."
Rena looked at her helplessly. As much as she wanted to fight for her friend, even she had to realize it was futile. She'd only get them into trouble. Not knowing what else to do, she shouted, "I'm just so angry! You always defend others, be it me or your family, but when it comes to defending yourself, you won't even lift a finger!"
"Stop it!" Leena had had enough. She didn't want to talk about it any longer. It would just make her heart ache even more. She loved Miguel. What happened between him and Alina was all in the past. She had nothing to do with it, so why should she suffer? She decided she wouldn't think about it anymore.
"How can you be like this?" Rena demanded. "They hurt you, yet you act as though nothing happened. This will make them think you're easy to bully!" Rena was a straightforward person. She wouldn't hold back if she thought what she was doing was right. In her mind, if she was not going to stand up for her best friend, who would?
"Rena, please! Just stop! I just want to be alone!" Leena screamed.
This time, Rena didn't say anything, her face was flush with rage. It seemed she was unsatisfied with her friend's reaction. Leena had taken the initiative to set a meet up with Alina when Jimmy had broken up with Rena. How come she wasn't assertive when it came to matters about herself?
Just then, another car stopped in front of the cafe. The door opened and a tall man emerged. As soon as he got off the car, he rushed towards the cafe.
He caught Rena's eye first. "Isn't that your friend?" she pointed out. When she was with Miguel, Leena had often brought her friend over for dinner with Miguel's friends. Rena recognized Spencer right away.
Leena looked at the direction Rena was pointing. "Spencer!" she shout
ed.
Spencer froze when he saw her. His eyes widened, as though he'd seen a ghost. It looked like he wished he would melt into the pavement and disappear. "Leena..." he said nervously. "You... Why are you here?"
"What are you doing here?" Leena demanded, ignoring his question.
Spencer was obviously flustered. He twiddled his thumbs, unsure of what to say. Smiling awkwardly, he stuttered, "I... I'm here with... I have something to talk about with Mr. Miguel." He paused, then fumbled on his phone in an attempt to call Miguel. "I can't seem to reach him..."
"What happened?" Leena furrowed her eyebrows.
At the mention of Miguel's wretched name, Rena sprang into action. Furious, she grabbed Spencer by his shirt collar. "How dare you mention his name!" Rena was way smaller than Spencer, but she managed to lift him up a little. Perhaps, it was because he was already shrinking from guilt, so he just let her grab his collar aggressively.
Spencer gulped anxiously. "No, no, please don't do that!"
Rena sneered. "Man up! You grew up with him, didn't you? How dare you keep his love affair with Alina a secret from Leena? Well, be grateful, because now we're giving you a chance. Tell us everything!"
Spencer looked at her, remorse written all over his face. "I... I didn't expect that Alina would show up... " It looked as though Spencer was about to cry. Why was he always caught in the aftermath of his friend's follies? How unlucky he was!
"Lies!" Rena spat angrily. "Today, Miguel left Leena in the dust. Tell us everything you know, or I won't allow you to leave!"
Leena was quiet this whole time. Seeing Spencer made her feel even more sad. Why didn't he tell her about Miguel's love affair with Alina? 'I thought we were friends,' she thought to herself remorsefully.
When Spencer saw the murderous look in Rena's eyes, he knew he wouldn't be able to get out of that situation unless he gave them what they wanted. Thus, he agreed to go inside the cafe to explain himself. When they were seated in the cafe, Rena began to interrogate him. "Tell me the truth. When did the two start dating?"
Spencer looked at Leena guiltily. Then, lowering his head and burying his face in his hands, he began to tell them what he knew. "The two of them were schoolmates back then. Alina was the campus belle of S University, while Mr. Miguel was also a famous figure in the school. They both got to know each other through school activities, and soon after, they began to date. I don't think Alina liked Mr. Miguel very much at that time. She just thought that he was serious, so she decided to keep him around. She entertained a lot of men even back then-- not just ordinary men, but rich and powerful ones. Every single day, luxury cars were waiting for her at the school gate. But Mr. Miguel worked hard to show his sincerity to her. He loved Alina very much and cherished their relationship. He was also from a rich family, but he was willing to do everything for Alina. Every morning, he insisted on riding a bike to FJ restaurant over a kilometer away from school to buy steamed buns for her. Alina was very picky, and only liked to eat steamed buns and soybean milk from that restaurant for breakfast. Additionally, she went out on morning jogs every day. Mr. Miguel would always wait for her with a towel and a cold bottle of water. He was always there for her, always on call. To tell you honestly, I've never seen Mr. Miguel treat someone that well."
Rena ran out of patience at this point. Slamming her fists onto the table, Spencer jumped. "Get to the point already! These details will only hurt Leena!"
