Throughout the journey, Cao Yan could discern great differences between here and Earth. Everywhere on the streets, it was easy to see beasts walking by their owners, and some of them even acted as rides.
These beasts varied in shapes and sizes.
“This ride looks just like a dinosaur. I wonder what it’s called in this world? Also, these beasts are just walking around on the streets. Even though they have their owners with them, wouldn’t there be incidents of human attacks when they get alarmed?”
As the memory he inherited from the body was not complete, Cao Yan was not very informed about many things. So he asked the fake system in his consciousness while walking.
“That dinosaur lookalike is called a Green Tooth Earthworm. It is one of the many demons. All the beasts and rides that can walk on the streets have passed the relevant tests, so they would not lose their rationality easily and attack humans,” the fake system replied.
“Magic Metropolis and Lantisde Ocean City nearby are rifling with demon pet trainers, so you will see all kinds of demons. However, it’s just ordinary people pretending to be demon pet trainers. They buy tamed demon beasts from the pet shop, so most of the owners here aren’t demon pet trainers. A real demon pet trainer would require a unique talent, and even in a big city like Magic Metropolis, it is not common to find someone with it.”
The streets were filled with beasts allowing people to ride on them obediently. Furthermore, fire or water would sometimes accompany the breaths of these demons. Such a sight was indeed startling for Cao Yan, and he started to look forward to beginning his career as a demon pet trainer.
The Demon Exhibition Center was a huge circular building, with throngs of people moving in and out of its gates.
The so-called exhibition was mainly a display of demon carcasses or specimens to allow the people of this world to understand and learn more about demons. As a public place, there were no restrictions for entry or exit.
Cao Yan followed the crowd straight into the exhibition center and started searching for his mission target.
There were many sections in the center with demon specimens of different types and periods.
Of course, some sections also contained live demons.
On modern Earth, there were around nine million different kinds of organisms, while the earlier centuries had an even wider variety.
The Green Jungle’s land and ocean space took up a vast amount of area, and that made it a perfect environment for reproduction. Thus, there were numerous animal species and types.
“As of now, based on the parts of the world we have discovered, there are more than 34 million different types of organisms. Vertebrates take up 37 percent, which is the majority, while protists are the smallest group, taking up less than a percent…”
The moment Cao Yan took a step into the center, a calm female voice echoed throughout the area from the sound system, providing detailed information:
“…We can classify the demons that have been discovered into five major levels and fifteen stages. The ones in stages one to three are the Subordinate demons; stages four to six are the Elite; stages seven to nine are the Commander demons; and stages ten to twelve are the Monarch demons. According to historical records, there are demons above stage 12, the Totem demons, in the Everlasting Forest. These are said to be mythical creatures… and only four demon pet trainers, in the record of history, had the luck to tame a Totem demon… As to whether there are any higher-level demons, no one can give a certain answer as of yet…”
“Subordinate, Elite, Commander, Monarch, and Totem levels each consist of three stages.” Cao Yan’s curiosity was piqued.
Very quickly, he followed the crowd into an exceptionally spacious exhibition hall.
“This section displays very unique demons. Most of them are the only sample left of their level, meaning these demons are the only ones displaying such characteristics amongst all the discovered demons. Please do not touch…” the digital voice reminded the visitors of the things to note.
Cao Yan was taken aback the moment he stepped into the hall, for he was greeted with a humongous skeleton display of a gigantic demon.
“It’s a giant long worm?”
It was the skeletal remains of a demon fixed on the ground. The skeleton was dark blue and was indeed a huge snake, only it was insanely huge. Even if it was coiled up, it still took up the size of almost half a soccer field. How long would it be if it were to be stretched out?
With such a huge snake coiled up in front, even a buffalo and elephant would look like a small teddy bear in comparison to its shocking size.
“This is a Typhoon Sea Snake. It was a 7th stage Commander when it lived. It had the ability to control typhoons and water.”
As they walked in, an experienced female staff walked over with a smile and said to the crowd, “Those who are here for the first time can come with me. I will be explaining where the demons in our center came about and their characteristics.”
Cao Yan followed the majority of them and listened to the staff’s guided explanations.
The staff member would always introduce every demon skeleton they passed by and tell the first-time visitors some fun facts.
Not long later, Cao Yan left the crowd and walked through the exhibits to the corner of the center alone.
In front of him was a small exhibition stand about half his height, and a round body was put on display. It looked like a giant, light gold amber.
The podium was fenced up to prevent the visitors from getting close.
Cao Yan had never seen such a huge amber before, and the reason he came over was that he had received the fake system’s hint that this amber was his mission target.
A board stood beside the podium, explaining the amber’s origin. It read:
“This amber was discovered 150 years ago by researchers. It was brought out of the deep sea, and researchers concluded that this amber was most likely a foreign particle that fell into the ocean as a meteorite… Its uniqueness lies in the fact that no matter what equipment was used, the organism sealed within this seemingly transparent amber could not be detected. A rough silhouette of an organism in its interior can be made out. It appears to be some form of insect…
It was a pity that this amber was made from the crystallization of unknown substances beyond this world. Its hardness is unimaginable, and it was impossible to be cut open. Therefore, researchers could never carry out further study on the organism within, and it became an exhibit.”
The amber’s surface appeared to be a light coat of gold, making it look like a transparent jelly. It was unimaginable for such material to be so hard that it was impossible to split open.
A ball of black facula could be roughly seen sealed inside, adding to its mysteriousness.
A long-shaped organism could be vaguely seen within the facula. It did look like a weird worm.
Cao Yan watched the amber and grabbed hold of the black crystal, which the mussel spat out, in his pocket.
He considered the chain of events that happened prior to and after the release of the mission. In addition, it was stated that the amber came from beyond this world. That was very similar to how the fake system introduced that black crystal to him.
On top of that, the newbie mission should not be difficult. All the reasons made Cao Yan feel that the crux of the mission could very well be in his hands, which was this black crystal.
“Mission hint: The host has retrieved an important object necessary for completing the mission.”
The voice in his consciousness further validated Cao Yan’s judgment.
The fake system said, “The black crystal the host had obtained was a part of the organism in the amber. It accidentally split when it fell from the sky and into the sea. For more than a hundred years, the organism within the amber has been calling out for the black crystal. The mussel, which swallowed the black crystal, was attracted by a certain force, and that was how it somehow got closer to the coast of Magic Metropolis… With the help of the artificial brain, the host managed to obtain the black crystal. It is the key to completing the newbie mission.”
Cao Yan, in the midst of his shock, thought: What exactly is the organism sealed in the amber? It’s already a miracle that it’s not dead despite being sealed for a century, and now it can actually call the black crystal to get closer?
That was indeed supernatural and beyond normal comprehension.
The black facula within the amber suddenly changed at this moment. It seemed to have bloated up rhythmically, as though it was the pumping heartbeat of the awakened organism, and the blackness inside got denser rapidly.
