After feasting on the windfinch, the demon spider laid by the side, motionless.
Cao Yan poked it and realized that its skin was as cold as metal, like a cold-blooded animal. It also did not have rough hairs like usual spiders. Instead, its skin was smooth like an egg.
“The host can give your pet a name. That way, you can improve the relationship between you and your demon pet.”
“Alright.” Cao Yan blurted out, “Then I’ll call it Eggy. It sounds pretty apt.”
This name was quite campy.
Obviously, the demon spider did not know what “Eggy” meant. Because of their contract, Cao Yan and the demon spider had established a master-subordinate relationship through their mental connection. When it heard the name its owner had bestowed it, the demon spider waved its front two legs in a seemingly happy way.
“Looks like Eggy likes the name.” Cao Yan was delighted. From the corner of his eye, he realized that the screen interface at the side was displaying Eggy’s details:

The screen displaying Eggy’s information quickly disappeared, so did the demon ball Cao Yan had in his hand.
Cao Yan looked at Eggy. This horrific-looking creature actually had a cute side? He tried to imagine Eggy as a cute pet, but he found it hard and totally unfitting of its appearance.
Cao Yan looked up at the sky. It was almost dusk.
Although he was at a secluded place, it was not far off from the harbor. In fact, he could see a few boats passing by in the distance. They were all returning to the harbor since it was getting late.
In this world, the night in the wilderness was filled with danger, so Cao Yan also decided to head back.
However, just before he departed, Eggy suddenly transmitted mental waves to him. It seemed to want to stay to hunt alone in the forest.
Cao Yan was a little hesitant. Eggy was just born. If it met danger and died, as its demon pet trainer connected to it mentally and spiritually, he would also be impacted.
On second thought, Cao Yan recalled that at the start of the demon pet trainer skill book, it was mentioned that one should have enough faith in their pet. It had the most natural survival instincts and would not easily put itself in danger.
Cao Yan nodded slightly, and Eggy leaped out of the boat. In a while, it climbed back onshore and chose a tree to spin its web.
Soon, it weaved a huge spider web spanning two meters. Such a web was obviously not meant for any normal animal.
Stars dotted the night sky.
It was already late when Cao Yan returned to the harbor. The night had fallen.
Old Wu, whom he saw in the day, was sitting by his boat, casting his line out to sea leisurely. When he saw Cao Yan, he beckoned him over.
Cao Yan quickly anchored his boat and jumped over to Old Wu’s boat. “Where’s Xiao Xi?”
Xiao Xi was Old Wu’s granddaughter he had met in the afternoon. Her name was Wu Xiao Xi.
“It’s her bedtime now. I’m old and can’t fall asleep, so I’m just fishing to pass my time,” said Old Wu.
The people who fished for a living would have the habit of sleeping early, as most of them would have to wake up in the wee hours to go out to sea.
“Here, I left this for you. Have a taste.” Old Wu opened the lid of a small basket by his leg. Inside was a pincer of a huge prawn. It was actually as thick as a person’s arm. Its shell was steaming red and its white flesh was spilling out at the joint, enticing one to take a bite.
This was the red ruby shrimp that Wu Xiao Xi was talking about in the day. It was similar to the lobster on Earth, just that it was slightly larger and had some low-level powers, making it difficult to catch.
Old Wu was an old glutton. After catching it, instead of selling, he kept it for himself to enjoy.
Cao Yan’s original body had often gone over for free meals. Therefore, he did not hold himself back this time either, especially after such a long day. He was already famished. He picked the pincer up and started cracking the shell open, eating in large mouthfuls. The fresh meat and tender texture tickled his taste buds, making it impossible for him to put the pincer down.
“Old grandpa, after fishing for your entire life, haven’t you thought of doing something else?”
Cao Yan asked as he ate, with the intention to start a topic so that he could understand this world better.
“I’m already so old; why would I want to do something else?” The old man said with a smile, “You, on the other hand, ever since your father left, you’ve been like a living corpse.”
The old man looked at Cao Yan and continued in a bewildered manner, “You seem different today. You look much happier and have the vigor of youth in your eyes.”
The chain of events that transpired today was too unbelievable. No one could guess the truth, so he was not the least worried about his identity as a transmigrant being exposed. He swallowed the meat and said, “My parents wouldn’t want to see me continue like that too. That’s why I wanted to ask you, hoping that you can give me some guidance.”
“Yes, yes, yes. You are still young and have a long life ahead of you. There’s nothing you can’t get over.”
Old Wu was pretty happy. “If I were to give you my opinion on what you should do from now on, I think you should continue with that little shop at home in the city. It’s such a pity to close it down.”
The old man placed his fishing rod on the stand and said excitedly, “I know other than fishing, you’ve always been wanting to be a spacesmith. If you listen to me, I’d say you should dispel all such thoughts as soon as possible. Occupations like demon pet trainers, mages, and all that require practice. They are not something that we can pursue.”
A spacesmith was someone who made tools like the demon ball.
Following the mainstream occupations that controlled the supernatural powers, different professions also came into existence.
Tools like the demon ball, which demon pet trainers often used, would require people with spatial talent to make. Then, the skills of weapon masters, mages, and scroll masters would finish it.
It would also require the solo combat gears and ancillary exoskeleton of a combat robot fighter.
Although the makers of these things served the battle occupations, because of the need for the unique talent and the high benchmark, they were always in high demand. Therefore, their status was nowhere lower than those in the battle occupations. They were all part of the special group at the top of the pyramid in this world.
Cao Yan’s original body had some spatial talent and had the potential to learn how to make demon balls. However, after his parents passed away without leaving any inheritance for him, he was unable to learn the skill professionally. He had to make do with simple tool-making in a large demon pet shop in the city as an apprentice while fishing for a living.
However, judging from Old Wu’s words, he did not think the original body would be able to do well.
Cao Yan did not defend himself either. He simply continued eating the prawn, looking as though he was paying full attention.
The old man probably could not understand the look in his eyes, but since he had started, he went on and on. The topic soon involved other aspects as well.
Cao Yan only chimed in from time to time to lead the conversation to the parts he paid attention to.
One was absorbed in talking, while the other in listening.
Cao Yan quickly filled in the blanks in the original body’s memory based on the information he got from the old man, like how the macroeconomy in this world worked and more.
The Green Jungle’s structure was not much different from the other worlds. There were different countries because of the separation of land. Some parts of the world were at war, but most were at peace.
Cao Yan was at Magic Metropolis belonging to Rainbow Nation. It was located in the southern part of the world where the Everlasting Forest and the Boundless Sea met.
All this information came from Old Wu, who was almost high from talking. He chatted about everything under the sun. However, since the old man had limited experiences, he was not sure about the specifics of this world.
Quite a long session later, Cao Yan put the prawn down when he saw how Old Wu’s spit started flying everywhere and landed on the prawn in his hand several times.
“Why did you stop eating? Go on.” Old Wu remarked.
“I’m full,” replied Cao Yan.
“It’s such a pity to not finish it up. I’ll eat it.” The old man picked up the remaining prawn meat and ate it like a hungry wolf.
Cao Yan was dumbfounded. Could this old man have wanted to eat the prawn, so he purposely spat on it to eat the leftovers?
Was this a trick of gluttons?
As time passed and night deepened, Cao Yan stood up to take his leave.
“You’re leaving already?” It was rare for Old Wu to find someone who was willing to listen to his nagging. Apparently, he had not talked enough.
