'I need a break.'
"Himari, I'm going to take a quick break."
"Okay, Kanna. I'll watch the front while you're out."
Walking outside, I go to my usual spot and light a cigarette.
"Ugh, I don't want to be here. I want to go home."
To be honest, I just straight-up hate my job. I've thought about finding a job somewhere else, but who is to say I'd like it any better? It's not like I hate every aspect of my job Himari is pleasant to work with, but some customers are just weird or difficult to work with. Like that strange little girl from earlier.
'What the hell was she trying to pull wearing that around? Did she steal all those clothes from someone because they clearly weren't hers?'
**Sigh**
I glance to my left, mostly out of habit. Unexpectedly a woman was standing there.

'Where did that woman come from, has she been standing there the whole time?'
She has dark black hair and eyes that are so dark they almost look like two little pieces of coal. She is wearing your standard business casual women's attire, and most prominent of all is the blue-white surgical mask. It's hard to tell with the surgical mask, but that woman looks like she would be especially beautiful; it's just that...
'Why the hell is she giving me such an intense stare?'
Having made eye contact, the woman slowly begins to approach me while never breaking her gaze. She stops, and a feminine voice soon fills my ears.
"Do you think I am pretty?" {1}
I am a bit confused by this odd and abrupt question, but maybe she sensed what I was thinking earlier? I decide to answer her, honestly.
"It's hard to say with that surgical mask you are wearing, but from what I can make out, I would say you are very pretty."
Seemingly pleased with my answer, she reaches back behind her ear to begin removing the surgical mask. Slowly she pulls back the mask revealing her appearance. What is revealed are two huge cuts leading from the corners of her lips to her ears.
"How about now? Am I pretty?"
As she speaks, her wounds split and once again make contact as the words flow from her face. No blood has spilled out, indicating these are old injuries.
"Ah! What the fuck?! Are you okay?!?"
Seemingly processing my response, her brows frown, and I assume what she makes is an angry grimace. She begins hysterically screaming, exposing the back of her throat, gums, and all thirty-two of her teeth.
Reaching behind her, she pulls out an unreasonably long and rusty pair of scissors and charges toward me. Instinctively I raise my hands to block. The scissors pierce my hand, passing through to the other side.
'What...what is this? Is it in my hand?'
I try to push the insane woman away, but it feels like I'm trying to push away a building.
The woman yanks her scissors out of my hand and moves them towards my abdomen. I scream, but either no one hears me, or nothing came out.
Feeling a sudden pressure, I look down at my stomach.
'That's...that's in my stomach? Blood. A lot of blood.'
While staring at the scissors, they suddenly turn into a mist and disappear. I turn my head to where the woman once stood, but again there is just a gray mist.
'What the hell is even happening? I don't understand.'
"Miss Kanna, your blood smells really good!"
A sweet and playful voice rings out. The pain has finally begun to set in, but I manage to look toward the source of the noise.
"Miss Kanna, thank you for helping me, but I'm famished and a bit tired now."
Like an innocent little doll, the girl rubs her belly. She pulls down her hood and removes her glasses, revealing blazing red eyes and sharp ears. At this point, she's only a few feet away from me.
'Is that the strange girl from earlier?'
Due to the pain, I start to approach the edge of awareness, but I manage to speak barely.
"What...what are you?"
"You shouldn't worry about that too much. Worrying will just be a waste. It'll be over soon."
She smiles, showing two sharp fangs. I take a step back, but my knees immediately give out.
"Are you a demon?"
Not showing any reaction to my question, she slowly approaches me. Seizing me, she moves her small mouth to my neck; I feel a hot breath followed by a slight pain. Almost immediately, I lose all control and feeling from my body.
'Is she biting me? I'm so cold. Why did this happen? Cold so cold.'
Slowly my consciousness faded and drifted away.

'Warm so warm!'
Feeling the warm red liquid flow down my throat and into my belly, I've never felt so satisfied before. I knew from my inheritance that sucking blood was enjoyable, but I didn't realize it would be this good! It's like every cell in my body is screaming out in comfort.
I actually stopped the Kuchisake-onna a little early because the blood smelled so good I couldn't stand the thought of wasting any. That was unquestionably the right decision.
[5 Essence acquired]
'Oh! That's nice but only five? Eh, probably because she's so weak.'
So now that I have her essence, she must be dead, right? So that makes her officially the first person I have ever killed. It feels a little weird when I think about it.
I thought I would have stronger feelings about my first kill, but I don't feel much. I guess maybe I feel slightly bad about my method of killing? But I needed a test subject...
Well, no point dwelling on it too much. In the world soon to return, the strong will once again walk on the weak. It is likely most humans will not survive.
Feeling the blood running out, I remove my fangs. Looking at Kanna's dehydrated body, I lick the blood from the corner of my mouth. I pat my stomach and start leaving the alley.
Many humans think that vampires bite their victims and let the blood spray out like a faucet, all the while allowing their faces to be covered in blood; however, this is false. In actuality, a vampire's fangs are hollow, and the blood is pulled through a special organ in the roof of a vampire's mouth. The only time blood may spill out is when the vampire removes their fangs, the blood left in the hollow fangs may leak out.
Stepping out of the alley, I hear a loud shriek from behind.
'It looks like Himari found Kanna's body.'
The police shouldn't be able to connect me to Kanna's death, but even if they do, I'll deal with it then.
Making my way back home, I start considering future plans. What I need to consider is if I want to stay in Japan after the Earth has reconnected with the cosmic mana stream. Being on an island has its advantages, but in my opinion, it has more disadvantages, and with the sea monsters and such in the future, it will be challenging to leave later.
But that begs the question, where is the best place for me to reestablish myself?
I think my best option would be to return to the United States. I am more familiar with it geographically than any other country. That brings me to my next problem. I have no passport, ID, or even proof I was born. Obviously, I can't use my old identification; besides, I can't hide my appearance at the airport. Stowing away on a plane would be quite tricky, and hijacking comes with numerous problems and challenges, so that's out of the question.
The only other way is to get there by boat. Getting there that way also comes with its own challenges, but it's more doable than by plane. Plus, I've never traveled by ship before, and as I mentioned earlier, the opportunities to do so will be limited in the future!
It is decided I will leave Japan and set up a base in the United States. I need to store everything from my home I plan to take with me as well as make any other preparations.
Suddenly a familiar ethereal voice rings out.
