Ch.19

T/N: I noticed I made a mistake with the titles in Chapter 7. Baldy Qian isn’t the discipline master, he’s the dean. Only noticed it when he was mentioned again here. My apologies!

– Geography class –

The geography class rep handed out the answer booklets, and Yi Ran’s booklet was probably the cleanest. Aside from the multiple-choice questions she shaded in as a guess, most of the long-form questions weren’t even attempted. Even the first question was answered with rubbish.

The geography teacher was a thirty-year-old lady named Lai Hong, who said: “The average score for this exam was 68 marks, which is five marks higher than last year’s. Everybody scored pretty decently, except for one special student who only scored 10 marks. Are you purposely trying to score that low?”

Lai Hong stared at Yi Ran, who copied Song Yu Meng’s way of raising the paper to hide her face, acting as a barrier between her and the students laughing at her.

Awkward.

“Alright, stop looking. I’m not going to say who it is, don’t say Teacher Lai is purposely embarrassing you.”

Yi Ran lowered the paper as Lai Hong started explaining, thinking: Not embarrassing me? Who wouldn’t know it’s me since you stared at me?

Lai Hong had a habit, and that was to start explanations from the long-form questions first. Once she had finished the first question’s explanation, she said: “The first part to the second question, I’ll skip it. It’s asking for the location of the Mediterranean Sea and as long as you write down the longitude and latitude, it’s enough. It’s incredibly simple, basically giving you free marks.”

“But!” Slamming the paper on the table, Lai Hong looked at the class. “We have a weirdo in the class who doesn’t want these four marks. The question is asking where the Mediterranean Sea is, and this fellow answered “on your head”.”

The whole class laughed.

Yi Ran laughed as well, as if she wasn’t the one Lai Hong was talking about.

Waiting for the laughter to die down, Lai Hong continued: “Coincidentally, this student’s paper was marked by the dean. You’re incredible, you almost made old Qian vomit blood.”

The whole class burst out laughing again. It’s commonly known that Qian Xing Gui, the dean, is the Mediterranean sea[1] with the nickname “Baldy Qian”. His temper was so bad, he must have thrown a fit.

“Old Qian told me to make sure to invite you to the teacher’s office for tea, so please be more self-aware and make sure you look for him at the office after class.”

Yi Ran pressed her lips together, thinking she wasn’t that dumb to go have tea with Baldy Qian!

But Lai Hong’s next words left Yi Ran in despair.

“You better make sure to go, or if Old Qian comes to find you, you’ll be in an even worse situation.”

Yi Ran: “……”

She was going insane. It seems like she’s destined to not be able to avoid this. If she knew, she wouldn’t have written rubbish and made things difficult for herself!

Song Yu Meng had been laughing from the start, and she was almost breathless. She wanted to know who this person was, it couldn’t be Crazy Yi, could it? But she looked at Yi Ran smiling, so it should be someone else.

The bell rang and while other students were chatting and laughing, Yi Ran had been sullen the whole period.

Clearly, she didn’t want to go to the teacher’s office to find Baldy Qian!

Lai Hong was about to leave the classroom when she saw Yi Ran still sitting down with a depressed look. She smiled and said: “Don’t be sad, the discipline master is waiting for you in the teacher’s office.”

Quite a few students were curious who it was, so they kept an eye on both doors to see who would walk out.

YiRan sighed and stood up, walking unwillingly to the rear door with a forced happy expression.

Song Yu Meng chuckled, seeing Yi Ran walking over with a long face and said especially loudly while pointing at her: “Hey, where are you going? You can’t be going to look for Baldy Qian?”

Yi Ran’s lips tightened into a line, unwilling to speak.

Song Yu Meng was laughing with tears in her eyes.

“Hahaha, so the weirdo is you! That’s so funny!”

There were still two other people who had left through the rear door, and everybody didn’t know who the person was amongst the three of them, but with Song Yu Meng’s words, everybody knew it was Yi Ran.

Yi Ran’s face was red and she said fiercely: “You’re still laughing? Keep laughing and I’ll get someone to deal with you after school!”

“Hahaha, come deal with me if you’re able to!” Song Yu Meng laughed while wiping away the tears at the corners of her eyes.

Yi Ran left angrily, spitting out: “I can’t be bothered with you.”

The bell rang, and chemistry class started, but Yi Ran hadn’t come back to class even after ten minutes.

Looking at Yi Ran’s empty seat, Song Yu Meng could already imagine how terribly Baldy Qian must be scolding her.

She was rejoicing at Yi Ran’s misfortune earlier, but after half an hour went by and the class was about to end, Yi Ran still hadn’t come back. Song Yu Meng was already wishing Yi Ran would return to the classroom earlier.

Usually, Song Yu Meng would never listen to science classes. She would either be gazing at Liu Luo Yang, sleeping, daydreaming or looking at what Yi Ran was doing.

Yi Ran was also prone to getting distracted during class, so they would often meet each other’s eyes. During the last English class, Song Yu Meng had seen Yi Ran secretly sucking on a lollipop and laughed at her.

But now when she turned to look at that seat, Yi Ran wasn’t there and she was feeling a bit odd.

The chemistry teacher was on the platform trying to explain the question, but Song Yu Meng was just holding her head and zoning out.

When would Baldy Qian let Crazy Yi return to class?

Physics was over by the time Yi Ran came back, which is to say, Baldy QIan scolded her for two whole lessons.

Song Yu Meng’s unease went away once she saw Yi Ran entering the classroom.

Looking at the way Yi Ran pursed her lips and looked defiant, she covered her mouth and laughed: “Tsk tsk tsk, Baldy Qian actually scolded you for 92 minutes. How terrible.”

“I didn’t even know I was scolded for 92 minutes, how would you know? Staring at your watch? Aren’t you a bit too bored?” Yi Ran raised an eyebrow as if she saw through Song Yu Meng.

Feeling a little guilty, but refusing to be nice, she asked in return: “Yeah, this lady is that bored. I just want to stare at the time and see how long Baldy Qian scolded you for, can’t I?”

“Of course you can, but……”

Yi Ran slowly got closer to Song Yu Meng, who gulped and retreated until her back hit a wall.

In this scenario, Song Yu Meng’s heart quickened for some reason and her face flushed. She thought Yi Ran wanted to kabedon her like in a drama, but no, Yi Ran just folded her arms and smiled at Song Yu Meng, bending a little.

“I didn’t come back for two whole periods, did you miss me?” Yi Ran smirked, teasing her.

“What! Who misses you? This lady wishes not to see you for the rest of this life, that would be best!”

Yi Ran stared seriously at Song Yu Meng for a few seconds, that pale face slowly turning red under her gaze.

“Stop being so stubborn.” Yi Ran held a smile back and pushed Song Yu Meng’s forehead gently with her index finger.

Her face all red, Song Yu Meng raised a fist and hit Yi Ran’s shoulder, saying in a huff: “Who’s being stubborn? Th is lady is being truthful, it would be best if I don’t see you for the rest of my life. How could I miss you?”

Upon saying that, her heart raced and her face quickly flushed.

Yi Ran narrowed her eyes, an “I don’t believe you” expression on her face as she smiled mysteriously.

The bell rang and a bunch of students rushed in from the rear door, running back to their seats. Yi Ran also turned to get back to her seat.

Using the bell to hide her voice, Song Yu Meng shouted at Yi Ran: “I really didn’t miss you!”

Yi Ran glanced at the still-flushed Song Yu Meng, smiled and wrote a word on a post-it before throwing it to her.

【I was just joking. I know you didn’t miss me, you don’t need to keep repeating it.】

Song Yu Meng suddenly felt embarrassed again, her face flushing.

Hmph, she wanted to emphasise it, what if some narcissistic person misunderstood!

……

During the maths evening self-study period, Tang Xiang Ping played solitaire, a person would answer the question, then choose the next person.

“Alright, let’s start with our maths rep Yi Ran. Explain question three first, then choose the next person.”

When Tang Xiang Ping said this, Song Yu Meng suddenly perked up. She had a feeling that Yi Ran would definitely choose her to answer next.

So when Yi Ran was answering, she tapped the shoulder of the girl in front of her and asked urgently: “What’s the answer for the next question?”

The girl raised her paper up to show Yi Ran the answer was A.

“Thanks a lot.”

After Yi Ran was done with the third question, Tang Xiang Ping asked her to pick the next person, and Yi Ran looked around before finally looking at Song Yu Meng.

Sitting straight, Song Yu Meng knew the next answer was A and she knew how to explain it too, so she wasn’t scared.

Everybody else was looking away, afraid to be called.

Smiling mysteriously, Yi Ran looked at the first row and said: “Then I’ll choose He Xiao Meng.”

The whole class looked at He Xiao Meng, who looked at Yi Ran in surprise before she started explaining the fourth answer.

Yi Ran sat in her seat and took notes while Song Yu Meng looked at her with an odd expression.

It was weird. She should have felt happy that Crazy Yi didn’t pick her, but she felt a bit disappointed.

He Xiao Meng picked one of the class committee members, who then picked Liu Luo Yang, who then picked Xu Yuan.

When Liu Luo Yang picked Xu Yuan, the whole class was jeering and teasing them. Song Yu Meng would have been incredibly mad usually, but she stayed exceptionally calm this time.

She was still trying to figure out: Why did Crazy Yi pick He Xiao Meng and not me?

“Quiet, listen to Xu Yuan’s explanation!”

With Tang Xiang Ping’s warning, the class quietened down.

After Xu Yuan was done, she looked at Yi Ran and smiled slightly, saying: “Then, I pick student Yi Ran.”

Yi Ran thought she wouldn’t be picked again since she had already answered, it was a bit of a surprise when Xu Yuan called her name.

Luckily, she was listening seriously, so she stood up and explained the answer to question 3.

With Yi Ran being selected by Xu Yuan, Song Yu Meng felt annoyed and scolded in her heart: She’s really a scheming bitch, why did she pick Crazy Yi? Green tea! She must be trying to seduce Crazy Yi!”

Just as Song Yu Meng was scolding Xu Yuan mentally, Yi Ran picked her.

“I choose Song Yu Meng.”

[1] 众所周知,教导主任钱兴贵就是个地中海,人送外号“钱秃头” – This was written quite confusingly. It literally translates to him being a Mediterranean sea, so I’m like ??? LOL. I reckon it’s because he’s balding, so… the top of his head is vast and empty like the sea? Not 100% sure.
