“Are you really that certain?”
Seeing that Tang Feng wasn’t joking, Qin Yanan took it seriously too.
“You can check the surveillance footage and see his movements for yourself; then you’ll understand,” Tang Feng said, full of trust in the results given by the system. He believed the person would certainly slip up at some point.
Qin Yanan frowned and thought for a moment before nodding her head, “Alright, I’ll check now.”
“I’ll come with you,” Tang Feng said. He also wanted to confirm if the information provided by the system this time was reliable.
As it was a self-built house, all the surveillance for the entire building could be accessed from Qin Yanan’s room.
This was his first time entering Qin Yanan’s room.
As the landlord, her room was much larger than his and even had a bedroom.
Unlike his room where the bedroom, living room, and kitchen were all connected—visitors would enter right into the bedroom, leaving no privacy to speak of.
Moreover, her room was very tidy, dominated by a pink color scheme and suffused with the fragrance of roses.
“Don’t snoop around,” Qin Yanan tidied the room a bit, concealing some personal items and then gave him a stern look.
Tang Feng rolled his eyes, “Who cares about looking?”
Qin Yanan glared at him a couple more times, then walked to the computer, clicked the mouse several times in rapid succession, and quickly brought up surveillance footage from the previous days, setting it to play at double speed.
The surveillance video began at night, with the corridor pitch-black and quiet.
As the video played, daylight started to break, and some tenants began to head to work.
But just as the video approached around 6:10 a.m., a man named Wang Xiaodao was seen going upstairs.
“Hm? He didn’t come back last night?” Qin Yanan immediately sensed something wrong.
This tenant had only been in South Yue Province for a little over half a month and she hadn’t heard about him having any friends locally.
Where could he have gone in the middle of the night?
Additionally, he wore a pair of work boots covered in mud and his clothes were similarly dirty. Did he go to a construction site to work at midnight?
The video continued to play. After Wang Xiaodao returned to his room, he didn’t come out again.
It wasn’t until around 9 p.m. in the video that Wang Xiaodao left his room again, still wearing the same clothes as when he returned.
“What does he do for a living? Why does he go there at night?” Not even Qin Yanan, regardless of her usual lack of insight, could ignore the abnormality.
Several more surveillance clips followed, all showing the same pattern.
Wang Xiaodao mostly moved about during the night.
He left in clean clothes each time and returned covered in mud.
Having watched these surveillance footages, Tang Feng grew even more convinced of the authenticity of the information provided by the system.
“I have a friend who deals with all sorts of people. It’s from him that I heard this person’s purpose in coming to South Yue Province might be complicated,” Tang Feng said, inventing a friend in order to gain Qin Yanan’s trust.
“Complicated purpose? What purpose?” Qin Yanan didn’t seem to doubt the reality of this friend—who didn’t have a few friends?
“This person’s movements are suspicious, and he might be involved in some cases,” Tang Feng said ominously.
Sure enough, Qin Yanan was so frightened that she was speechless for a moment and hurriedly grabbed his hand, “What do we do now? Should we call the police?”
“No,” Tang Feng immediately retorted.
“Why not?”
“Firstly, we don’t have any evidence. Just a few segments of surveillance footage can’t prove anything and may prematurely alert them. Secondly, such people are typically desperate and vicious. If cornered, he might do anything.”
After hearing his analysis, Qin Yanan felt it made sense, “So what should we do now? We can’t just do nothing, right?”
Tang Feng smiled slyly at her, “Are you scared too?”
Qin Yanan glared at him, “This isn’t a time to joke. Can’t you be serious for once?”
Tang Feng dropped his playful demeanor, “Let’s not startle them for now. Pretend we don’t know anything and keep watching for a few days. I suspect they’ll act soon.”
Qin Yanan was visibly uneasy, “Keep watching for a few days? Staying in the same building as these people is too dangerous, isn’t it?”
Tang Feng patted his chest, “Don’t worry, I’m here. If you notice anything wrong, call me immediately; I’ll come right over.”
Qin Yanan rolled her eyes, “Can I really count on someone who doesn’t come home at night like you?”
“Up to you,”
Tang Feng couldn’t bother to argue with her any longer and turned to leave.
“Hey, you’re leaving just like that?” Qin Yanan grew anxious seeing he was about to leave.
“Nonsense, if I don’t leave, do you expect me to sleep at your place?” Tang Feng glanced back at her.
“Well, it’s not like it’s impossible…” Qin Yanan started to say but then realized it might have come across the wrong way, quickly correcting herself, “My place is big; I can sleep in the bedroom and you in the living room. That way, if there’s any danger, we can join forces.”
“Why not I sleep in the bedroom and you in the living room then?” Tang Feng immediately countered.
“This is my house, and I’m a girl; you can’t expect me to sleep on the couch,” Qin Yanan insisted, standing her ground.
“You call yourself a girl? You’re clearly a tigress,” Tang Feng couldn’t resist teasing.
“Who are you calling a tigress?” Qin Yanan’s fur bristled, ready to pounce.
“Mm, now you’re even more like one,” Tang Feng continued to tease recklessly, “Alright, I’ll stop joking. Don’t worry, he won’t deviate from his task until it’s done.”
Qin Yanan thought about it and realized it made sense; the person had been keeping a low profile for so long, so his intentions must be significant.
Before his plans were completed, he probably wouldn’t target her.
Having grasped the situation, she looked at Tang Feng with newfound respect, “Tang, I’ve noticed you’ve changed these past few days. You suddenly got so calm and collected. What happened to you?”
With a mischievous smile on his face, Tang Feng said, “I’ll tell you the truth. The original Tang Feng is dead; I have taken over his body. My real name is… Chen Beixuan!”
“Crack…”
Just as he was boasting, a flash of lightning suddenly sounded outside.
“Ah…”
Qin Yanan screamed and dived into his arms.
