48 Natural Weakness

Name:Hero's Return Author:Artpyro
The second day at the Starseeker School started just like the first with Sora and Rin waking up and getting prepared to leave then being quickly teleported out by Mana. Arriving in the same lecture hall they were earlier than most and found a seat near the front, soon other students began to appear as well as the friends he had made yesterday.

The first to arrive was Ben who sat next to him followed by Emphillia who sat beside Ben, soon Indy and Phi arrived and sat on the other side of Sora. After 15 minutes the lecture hall had filled up and the hubbub of conversation filled the room.

As the clock hit 8 a flash of violent purple lightning hit the stage leaving the physical teacher Xion on stage.

Xi: "Hello again! Let's carry on with the introductions."

"Straight away huh?"

"Well what could you expect?"

"Go up then."

"What? No! You first!"

"Bro just go up."

"Ugh! Fine..."

The introductions got under way once more and there was no real drama unlike the day before. Ben jumped onto the stage and drew some eyes towards him due to the fight he had with Sora the day before and quickly introduced himself and his partner falchion before demonstrating their fighting ability together. Ben couldn't really demonstrate his full fighting potential with no target he could fight against to show off his unorthodox style, he returned to his seat quickly after he finished.

Xion stood at the front as the last introduction went through and clapped her hands together, causing a reverberation that travelled across the entire hall.

Xi: "Alright!"

The students gazed with expectant eyes as they awaited what their next task would be.

Xi: "Seeya!"

Another violent thunderclap Xion had disappeared.

...

There was silence in the room for a long period of time. Students began looking at each other in confusion. Sora looked towards his friends...

...

...

...

So: "Wait what?"

Be: "What's happening?"

Em: "Are we being tested?"

In: "Probably not."

Ph: "Then what's happening?"

...

Be: "Oh yeah I just remembered."

So: "Hm?"

The entire group looked towards Ben who was looking towards the stage with his arms folded.

Be: "Well the first day was apparently meant for introductions and physical testing, the second day was meant for our first non-physical lesson."

In: "Really? Oh, well I guess we're waiting on our teacher then."

Be: "Guess so."

Sora had a neutral expression towards this statement whilst Rin slept on his lap, Emphillia noticed this and quickly asked.

Em: "Don't like non-physical lessons Sora? Please don't tell me you're the stereotypical 'Idiot Hero' type."

Sora jolted up at this statement.

So: "Hm? Oh, I don't mind em, I'm average on this kind of stuff."

Em: "Really? I really thought you were going to fit into the stereotype..."

So: "Nah... Lotsa stuff you could learn from these, like where a races weaknesses are or what environmental changes to look out for that would amplify or decrease the power of certain magic. That kinda stuff matters in a fight too, course I would pay attention to it."

In: "He's right."

So: "I have problems with keeping the information in my head but I'll find a way around it."

Sora smiled.

Before long the same spatial distortion that had appeared when students were teleported in appeared in the middle of the stage leaving a small furry creature with a white coat holding onto a book that was holding onto a book, compared to the size of the creature the book was large enough to be mistaken for a large shield. The small creature was akin to a puffier brown raccoon, the fur on its head exploded outwards like a lions mane and they wore extremely large black goggles that hid their eyes.

"What's that?"

"Is it the teachers' pet?"

"It looks pretty cute actually."

"Oh it's a zunzkin."

"Zunzkin?"

"You don't know about em?"

"No."

"They're a race that come from up north."

"Up north? I heard it's pretty cold up there."

"Well duh, look at his fur dude. Think he comes from somewhere hot?"

"Hmmmmm... Yeah, makes sense..."

As conversation started between the students they were all stopped by a very soothing voice coming from the stage, its tone more masculine than feminine.

?: "Hello everyone, I will be your teacher for non-physical lessons."

"What? A little guy like him?"

"Don't underestimate them. The zunzkins average intelligence are far and above that of an average humans, Im not surprised that one is qualified to teach here."

?: "As some of you may have noticed I am indeed a nunzkin. I hope my appearance doesn't distract you from your studies. My name is Oswald."

With a gesture of his hand the book began to float in front of him as it opened up and the pages began to flip, stopping near the beginning of the book. As this happened Oswald's mane seemed to slowly float upwards, like a gentle breeze was coming from below him.

Os: "On the topic of races. Today we will be learning about race weaknesses and strengths such as where magic builds up in each race."

Quickly and efficiently moving on with the lesson.

Os: "For example, the nunzkin gather energy into the 'lions mane' as its described by many. The hair on our heads stand up on end when we are casting magics, the colour of the hair changes as we cast it, lets say I cast wind magic."

Oswald aimed his hand to the side as a gust of wind blew out, his mane transforming from a brown colour to a green colour for a small amount of time before reverting back to its brown state.

Os: "And if I were to cast fire magic."

From the same hand a plume of fire quickly shot out then disappeared into a cloud of smoke. His mane transforming into a red colour before quickly returning to a brown colour.

Os: "Anything else is self explanatory. Moving on, humans."

Oswald flipped through his book.

Os: "Humans are a very special case, magic for them is spread throughout their entire bodies unlike most races that have them concentrated into one area. This comes at the detriment of expending the same energy to cast weaker magic compared to other races. Don't think this means that humans are weak though as whilst the disadvantage lies in strength the advantage comes in stamina. In a situation where a human and another race cast magic in front of them constantly, granted they are on the same level the other race will expend its energy completely before the human. This is because magic is concentrated for non-human races and are higher in quality rather than quantity."

Many students had taken out books and were taking notes, Sora found that he was completely unprepared for this and as he looked to his sides Emphillia, Ben, Indy and Phi were writing things down. Phi was writing in letters that he could not understand. Ben and Indy had a normal feather and ink to use whilst Emphillia's feather was much more extravagant as it burst with colour. Phi had a red feather and paper she used was black, whenever her pen made contact with the paper there was a small flame and what was left after the flame disappeared was red writing.

So: "Where'd you get this stuff fro-"

Em: "Shhhh!!"

Sora was immediately quiet. He sighed to himself and thought.

So(T): Guess I'll just try and remember it.

Oswald didn't wait for students as he sped forward.

Os: "Now, moving onto dwarves..."

The lesson carried on and on with Sora trying to retain as much information as possible. From inside him he could hear.

Ma: "You don't know do you..."

So(T): "Don't know what?"

Ma: "About the fact that I can be used as a temporal storage for stuff that you want to carry around."

So(T): "I can do that?!"

Ma: "Where'd you think your friends got their stuff from?"

So(T): "Why didn't you tell me?! Actually couldn't you have just read my mind and knew that I didn't know?!"

Mana was silent for a moment.

Ma: "I don't know if you remember but you were kind of busy yesterday... Also... You told me not to read your mind too much so..."

Sora's mind flashed back to the entire day before.

So(T): "Oh... yeah... well, I'll go out and get some stuff today and um... Yeah I do remember saying that... Um... How do I give stuff to you?"

Ma: "Just put it in your room and tell me if you need it, or I'll carry it if I see it as needed for the day."

So(T): "Thanks."

Mana seemed to go back to sleep as he stopped responding.

Sora was staring into space as he talked to Mana and completely ignored the lesson as he did so but a single word snapped his attention back towards Oswald.

Os: "Alright, moving onto the Demonic races."

Sora immediately looked to the stage and started paying attention.

Os: "Not much is known about them because they're from another plane and don't really travel. But the few sightings that have been recorded down all lead to the same conclusion, all demons have horns and their strength is fully dependent on the toughness and size of these horns. If one is broken then their magic casting will be below even a humans in terms of strength and their stamina will also greatly decrease. With both broken it would negate their use of magic altogether."

So(T): "So the horns are the weak spot!"

Os: "Do be warned though, it is highly advised to flee against a demon on your level of power. Their horns are some of the best of all the races in concentrating magic, granted their stamina would take a hit too but running out of stamina won't matter if you are defeated before then. Breaking a horn is possible and whilst a demon can regrow the horn, its a very slow process and dependent on the power of the individual it could even take centuries. Moving onto elves..."

Sora began thinking more and more.

So(T): "Just run? That's helpful... I'm aiming for the one at the top here so the toughness would be completely out of my current level... Guess I'll just have to aim higher then..."

Sora sighed inwardly, his life just got a lot harder now that he knew what he was in for. Sora calmed himself down and began listening to the rest of the lesson. Hours passed as Oswald described each races strengths and weaknesses in the most efficient way possible, even going into rare races that one possibly may never encounter in their lifetime.

Nearing the end of his alloted time Oswald closed his book, the slamming sound that came from it reverberated through the lecture hall and all the students who were writing or staring at other places looked towards the stage.

Os: "Well, I hope I haven't bored you. Next time we meet we will talk about aura and its properties as well as unique auras that are specific only to individuals or small parties of people. Thank you very much. You are dismissed."

The book floated back into Oswalds hand as he carried it like a box inbetween his body and his arm. His free hand rose up to his shoulder height and he clicked his fingers teleporting out of the lecture hall in the same way he came in.

The students began to pack up, gathering all their things into one place, as the space around them slightly distorted they disappeared. Sora paid attention to these distortions and blamed himself for not paying attention sooner.

So: "So it is true..."

Em: "Hm?"

So: "Mana can act as a moving storage..."

Emphillia was surprised that Sora didn't know.

Em: "What?! We were all told as we were going into our accommodations."

So: "What? When?"

Em: "I don't know I wasn't in your group."

So: "Wait..."

Sora thought back to the accommodations where he had been distracted by Iona.

So: "Never mind I wasn't listening..."

Em: "I thought so..."

So: "Well never mind that I need to go buy stuff. Where'd you guys get all your supplies?"

In: "Us? I got mine from the markets at the town."

Ph: "Same as Indy."

Be: "I brought mine from home but it looks like they have it here."

So: "Oh, can you come down with me and help me out?"

In: "Sure, I got nothin to do."

Be: "I got stuff to do but I'll come with you, I can save it till later."

Em: "I need to condense these notes so I'll leave it to Indy."

Ph: "Oh can I join you? I need help with condensing."

Em: "Sure!"

So: "Alright, we'll see you guys tomorrow then."

Em: "Yeah, is tomorrow physical again?"

Ph: "I think it is... We'll see tomorrow!"

Emphillia and Phi were teleported out.

So: "So how expensive is this kinda stuff?"

In: "Not that bad."

Be: "You have money though?"

So: "Yeah, I went on alot of hunts for training. Made some money while doin it."

In: "Oh really? How much?"

So: "Eh, enough."

As the boys talked they teleported out. A girl with a sword was still packing her things as people were teleporting out, it was Evie who had shocked all the people with her power.

Ev: "I need some extra supplies..."

All of Evie's belongings got transported into her storage as she stood in thought for a moment before teleporting out of the room.
