Chapter 70: Beginnings of the Secret Society (8)

"Geuh! You'll regret this. We won't let this incident go." A guard clenched his chest, trying his best to stop the bleeding as he plopped to the ground, dying.

With him, all the guards in the workshop had been killed. At first, Compass Carburettor had thought the engineer and his assistants would be alarmed like the middle-aged lady. But in reality, they were just calm, knowing very well that they wouldn't be harmed.

After all, they knew their worth the best.

The engineer looked at Compass Carburettor, "Is the ownership of the underground changing hands?"

Basically, he had assumed one of the leaders had overthrown the leadership of the underground Boss and had succeeded in doing so.

"Nope, the underground is dead. We eradicated it." Compass Carburettor raised his hand, waving as he smiled cheerfully. In the eyes of the engineer, it looked like a middle-aged woman acting cute, like a teenager, causing him to chuckle once.

"Is that so," He laughed, turning serious as he asked, "So, what will become of us?"

'It seems the act of the Lord throwing him to the underground has seriously affected his mind. It'll take some serious work to set him up in order. Though, I don't have that much time on my hands. Guess I have to go through this the quick way and not resolve his issues. Rather, I'll leave it to his wife to figure out. She's pretty smart.' He thought, smiling, "Nothing much will change. Your work remains the same."

"I guessed so," The engineer sighed.

"But," Compass Carburettor laughed, "We won't hold your family hostage. They are free to live their lives as a normal citizen."

"Really?" The engineer frowned, "Please do note that I hate any schemes. If something happens to my family, I'll just commit suicide. You'll not get any weapons without my help."

"Relax," Compass Carburettor waved his hand nonchalantly, "Our organisation strives to eradicate all evil or something along those lines. So, we won't do anything that robs you of your human rights."

"Then…" One of the assistants asked in hope, "Will we become free too?"

"Well yeah," Compass Carburettor nodded, "We'll employ you to work for us. You'll be provided with a salary accordingly. It's a standard business relationship. But, due to your line of work, you'll have to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Other than that, you won't be forced to do anything beyond your will."

"Alright, that's many times better than my current conditions. It's even better than what I had when I worked under the Lord," The engineer said, "I hope you follow up with what you have promised."

"In the name of the Legendary Night Spirit, the Lord of the Night, the Protector of Dreams, I vow to abide by my terms." Compass Carburettor raised his hands, stating solemnly.

The abrupt change in his demeanour caused the engineer to flinch, trembling a little as he asked, "Who's…that?"

"He's the one we pray towards, the all-feeling one. The Secret Society has existed for more than a millennium, silently protecting humanity from the forces of evil. And all along, the one to guide us and ensure the organisation never strayed away from its motto was him." With a reverent tone, Compass Carburettor said, "If you pray to him, you'll be blessed. But if you go against him, you'll be cursed. And as long as we stay true to our goal of making this world more peaceful, the Lord's blessings would support us."

"A Spirit…" The engineer muttered, faintly shuddering. Spirits were a mysterious Dungeon Monster that seldom appeared. In historical documents that barely remained undamaged, there were accounts of Spirits.

In a far off continent, there existed a Level 5 Dungeon, the strongest of its kind. And, a dungeon break occurred, causing all the Spirits within to flood out, destroying all the humans living on that continent.

And occasionally, some of the Spirits would venture forth into other continents. Each Spirit was said to possess mysterious powers. As it was just a legend, no one knew if it was true or not. That was also the reason Compass Carburettor behaved in such a manner to make people assume he was a spirit.

As for the engineer, he felt his mind shudder, asking in disbelief, "Spirits are real?"

"At least, our Lord is real. I've seen him once." Compass Carburettor said, adding fuel to the fire in their minds, "And recently, our Lord commanded us to expand into Heroica Empire and cleanse it of its murky waters."

He then said, "If you don't believe it, you can ask the bandits in the bandit stronghold near the city. They have seen him just recently."

Sighing, the engineer asked, "Fine, since it's just work, I'll keep my end of the deal. As long as my family is safe, I'm satisfied."

He then looked at the middle-aged lady before him, one that seemed mysterious from the start, asking, "May I know the name of your Lord?"

"Remember it well," Compass Carburettor nodded, "He's called Domino Plottopia."

Compass Carburettor waved his hand, turning around to exit as he said, "Someone will arrive to help you adjust to everything. Just rest for today. Talk freely with your family. No one will disturb you from today onwards."

"Thank you," The engineer bowed, tearing up a little while all the assistants did the same too. Expression of gratitude was evident on their faces as they cheered a little once Fealta and Compass Carburettor left.

In the living room, the middle-aged lady was worried about what to do with the corpses of the four guards when Fealta and Compass Carburettor arrived.

Upon realising her worries, Compass Carburettor motioned for her to relax, "Some people will arrive soon to get rid of all the corpses. Don't worry about it and just spend the time with your husband. He'll be working a lot after this, since he's a formal employee of our organisation. In our organisation, we guarantee human rights and numerous other benefits, but the workload is equally high."

"Thank you for helping us." The middle-aged lady bowed, "We are grateful for your help."

"Don't mind it, I'm just doing my job. I'm also being paid for my work, you know." Compass Carburettor laughed jovially, waving his hand as he said, "Then, if you'll excuse me. I still have to double-check if anyone else from the underground managed to slip through our net."

"Ma'am," The middle-aged lady slightly raised her voice, asking in a tone of curiosity, "Can I know your name?"

"Sure," Compass Carburettor laughed, waving his hand as he exited the house, "I'm known in the Secret Society as Duchess."

"Duchess Plottopia."
