The energy in the old man's eyes dimmed when he saw that Darren had no intention of taking the iron chain. He bowed his head and returned to his place beside the giant corpse. He sat down cross-legged, closing his eyes, and didn't say another word.

It was clear that he had washed his hands of Darren. He would give no more counsel to this haughty outsider.

Still, the old man couldn't help feeling bad for Darren, knowing he was certain to experience a miserable death at the hands of the descendants.
