“Something to be happy about happened.”
“What is it?”
Asher took out a bottle of wine and handed it to Caleb. As he walked out, he said nonchalantly, “I divorced Susan Mills, and married Claire Royce.”
After saying that, his lips curled into a smile yet it disappeared in an instant.
Someone had already prepared the wine glass and rattan chair for them. Asher sat on the chair with his legs crossed. He looked at the red fluid in the wine glass with arrogance.
Caleb was surprised as he heard Asher’s words. “Susan willingly divorced you?”
“That’s not up to her.”
“Who’s Claire Royce? Is that the girl you adopted from the orphanage?”
“Yes.”
Caleb pressed further. “Is she pretty?”
Asher threw him a glance. “She’s Mrs. Kens, after all. Why did you even ask such a thing?”
“It’s just such a waste to me. You’re ruining an inexperienced and innocent girl like her, who just became of age. “
“Innocent? Inexperienced?” Asher raised his eyebrows and chuckled. “You haven’t seen how she fought back against Susan today with her sharp tongue.”
Caleb twirled his wine glass gently. “Since you already registered your marriage with her, what do you plan to do next?”
“Hmm?” Asher asked lazily, “What plan?”
“What else? Are you not planning to bring her out?”
Asher suddenly thought of her clever look and said the exact words she used. With a change of tone, he said, “Oh, it’s a hidden marriage.”
“Again?” Caleb said. “You and Susan tried hiding, and everything got exposed in the end anyway.”
“Why must you emphasize that this is my second marriage?”
Caleb chuckled. “I’m just stating the facts.”
Asher looked away and thought of Claire.
She was eloquent, but… still immature.
“When the time comes, you’ll naturally get to see her,” Asher said, “it’s still too early now.”
Caleb touched his chin and after some thought, he replied, “President Kens, are you hiding a mistress in the castle?”
“First, that mansion isn’t a castle. Secondly, I will not go see her again.”
“My gosh! You married her and refused to see her? It must be lonely to stay in such a big, empty house.”
Asher took a sip of wine and put down his wine glass.
The night fell gradually. Claire lost her cool in the mansion, simply because of how Asher easily controlled and changed her fate. On the other hand, Asher was leisurely wine tasting, content with his own life.
One dominated, and the other was being dominated.
Four years later.
The most prestigious University of Economics in Melford City–under the Finance building.
A group of graduating students was wearing their graduation caps. They huddled together as they took a photo.
Claire stood on the left side of the person in the middle. Her long hair was flowing down her waist as she smiled at the camera.
Taking graduation photos would always take a long time, and melancholy filled the air as the students were about to go their separate ways. Claire rubbed her stiffened cheeks from all that smiling. As she looked at the camera, it reminded her of another scene.
Four years ago, when she was taking the photo for her and Asher’s marriage certificate, she was also smiling like that–a fake and reluctant smile.
Claire hated taking photographs.
Why must people smile in photographs? Even if there was nothing to be happy about, people would still have to act as though they are content and in joy.
Claire no longer had her innocence from before. Instead, she now stood tall with a slender figure, and her clear, large eyes had a little more charm than before.
After the photos were done, everyone scattered from the building. Those who were friends grouped together before they left..
