"So, I can only give you one type of seed. Pick one, and the seed will be yours," the old woman said, making sure that Yang Zhang took great consideration of which type of seed he wanted because he only had one choice.
Yang Zhang actually had something in mind already because he wanted to fill the ammo of his gauntlet gun with something other than pebbles.
Because he had dedicatedly played Plant vs. Zombie even to the newest release before the apocalypse, the first thing in his mind was the peashooter.
He wanted a plant that could supply his infinite ammo of tough pea for his gauntlet gun, and that would fulfill his Plant vs. Zombie fantasy hehe.
But now that he was standing in the middle of various crops. He had to think twice. Because he was eyeing the potato the whole time.
If he could grow a potato farm right now, that would be beneficial. Rice was out of the question because it was very difficult to grow and very prone to many climate changes, possibly from the Z-20 virus as well.
So if he wanted to start a farm, potato was the very first thing he needed for his source of carbs.
But…
'Do I have enough time to take care of my farm right now? Since I'm traveling to search for many primary needs first.'
'And since I have only one seed to grow, that means I only have 1 chance. What if the crop turned out to be mutated once budding? That would be the biggest waste of time since the potato would be inedible.'
'So the most logical pick would be….'
Yang Zhang turned at the old woman and said, "Please give me the pea."
"Hm? Pea? Out of all these crops, and you picked pea? You won't fill yourself with that, young man," the old woman said as she shook her head. "I suggest you take potato or at least any type of fruit."
"No, Grandma, I want the pea. And if it's possible, I don't need the seed…." Yang Zhang insisted. "I want a grown pea plant."
The old woman was bewildered by the insistence. She didn't know, nor could she guess what would this young man do with a pea plant.
Of course, the peas were edible, but they wouldn't fill his stomach.
But since the young man really wanted a grown pea plant, there was nothing she could do.
"Well, if you insist, I have a grown pea plant. Come with me."
The old woman led Yang Zhang deeper into the greenhouse and pointed at a small pot with a grown pea plant.
There were three big pea pods hanging, much to Yang Zhang's joy.
"Okay, I want that, Grandma!"
"Hmm, I still don't get why would you take this, but if you insist…." Grandma walked to the front door of the greenhouse and took a tote bag. She returned to Yang Zhang and handed the tote bag to him. "You can use this to bag that pea. Don't worry, I still have the seed. I can replant it if I want."
Yang Zhang carefully grabbed the pot and then put it inside the tote bag. He put the tote bag over his shoulder and nodded at the old woman, "Grandma, thank you for the pea. I really need this one."
"It's fine, young man. I'm sorry if I scared you by my attack. I just want to run a little test before," the old woman said. "I hope we are in a good term after this."
"Yes, Grandma, thank you so much!"
Yang Zhang bowed his head repeatedly after getting what he wanted.
'Instead of TM or HM, I got this pea plant after that sudden gym battle. I mean… I wouldn't protest, of course,' Yang Zhang thought.
The old woman led him outside until he was in front of the main door leading to the settlement's main road.
"Young man, are you planning to stay in this settlement for a while?"
"Ah, no, Grandma. I want to return to my hut in the east. That's my real home right now," Yang Zhang replied. He looked at his left and right, then leaned in to speak in lower volume to the old woman.
"Grandma, do you know if there is an abandoned town near this human settlement?"
"Abandoned town? The one with zombies wandering around?"
Yang Zhang nodded in response, and the old woman hummed for a moment.
"There is one north from this settlement. It's a village that's supposed to be our second settlement, but from what I heard from Kobra before, there are still few zombies wandering around," the old woman informed. "What are you going to do there, young man?"
"Uh… I want to scavenge. Maybe I can find any medical supply for myself," Yang Zhang said half-truth of his true intention. Of course, all he wanted to do was to collect Brain beads.
"Well, good luck. I don't think you'll find any trouble against those zombies. Just don't go after the sun has set because those zombies will be twice more feral at night."
"I know. Thanks so much, Grandma. I will visit whenever I come to the settlement for a trade," Yang Zhang said.
"Oh, one more, may I know your name, young man?"
"… Deng Fan."

Yang Zhang quietly exited the main gate after he showed the Kobra badge. He walked to the forest, far from the gate, and then commanded, "Okay, guys, you can show yourself now!"
"Vii!"
"Squeak!"
"Chirp! Chirp!"
Little Ivy, Chestnut, and Lt. Spicy Wing popped out at the same time after their master allowed them to come out.
They looked much more comfortable after leaving, so did Yang Zhang.
He felt liberated after he was all alone in the forest.
"Ahh, what a breath of fresh air. Being alone is the best feeling ever!" Yang Zhang said. He opened his palm and aimed at the tall tree branch on top. "Okay, guys, do you want to meet a new friend?"
"Vii!"
"Chirp!"
"Squeak!"
"Then, let's go to that village and collect Brain beads!"
