Episode 260- Worried that Eugene would be shunned
He had only worried for his sister who would be shunned away if someone were to find out what she did and didn't worry about the real situation at hand. If his sister didn't do this, it would have been incredibly unfair to both their comrades back in base and also her roommate.
He turned to Camille and immediately apologized, "Sorry." He had almost hurt her without realizing it. He only cared about his sister and skipped over the fact that Camille was being shunned away by the nobles. Not to mention, the friends that he just made.
"Yes? For what?" Camille was genuinely confused as she asked Aernest.
Aernest raised his head and answered, "For being an idiot."
"??" Camille was still confused. She wanted to ask but didn't dare ask because she wasn't close to Aernest and didn't want to annoy him.
After 4 hours of touring the academy, Eugene parted ways with Aernest and headed back to her dorm with Camille. Though it was a dorm, it was essentially an apartment because there was a kitchen in the dorm, not to mention two bedrooms inside of the dorm.
Eugene felt bad for the kitchen because that place was going to be dusty as hell. Why? Because she couldn't cook for the world's sake.
"... We have to head out again." Said Camille suddenly as she stared at the kitchen. Eugene turned to Camille and blinked.
"For what reason?" Why must they go out again?
"To get groceries." She replied simply as held her chin up with her index finger.
"..." Eugene blinked and stared at the 10-year-old girl who was 10 cm shorter than her, "... You know how to cook?" There was speechlessness in her voice as she asked. She sounded completely surprised as she stared at Camille.
Camille nodded, "Yes."
"..." Eugene gulped.
A few seconds later..
"What are you waiting for? Let's go." Eugene was already at the door.
Camille blinked and quickly ran to Eugene.
They went grocery shopping together downstairs and purchased a large number of ingredients. Whatever Camille saw, she threw it into the basket. Eugene only watched Camille as they shopped and carried the basket for her. Camille began to sweat in horror and shock just as they were about to pay.
"E...Excuse me?"
"That would be 20 coins."
Eugene raised a brow at Camille. She stared at Camille's horror-stricken face before chuckling, "Here." She handed 20 silvers to the cashier before picking up the ingredients and arranging them into 5 big boxes. But before she could grab them, Camille got to them first and carried them as if they weighed nothing, slightly surprising Eugene.
"... I… I will do all the menial work!" Camille looked very confident as she said this, making Eugene raise a brow. Eugene glanced at Camille up and down.
"As you wish." The corner of Eugene's lips raised and moved to the side for Camille to head out first.
As soon as they got back to their dorm, Camille began to work almost immediately. She began first by organizing the whole kitchen before cooking. This naturally made Eugene happy as she realized from watching Camille work that Camille was someone who cleans as she goes. This meant that Camille was a clean person, which relieved Eugene a lot.
Eugene was already waiting at the dining table. She already knew from her former life that she wouldn't be of help in the kitchen at all. She attempted cooking and dishwashing until the day she died, but it never went well. The only thing she could do was clean the house, or dust the house, which she did often during her breaks from work.
"Food is ready." Said Camille whose head popped out from the kitchen. Eugene nodded and got up. Eugene helped Camille set the table and helped her bring food to the dining table. Shockingly, Camille cooked a variety of food. Despite the fact that the food was not presented in the same elegant manner as that served in noble houses, Eugene could already tell that the food would be delicious and exactly as she expected... It was so darn good!!
She and Camille wolfed down the entire meal together, and when they were done an hour later, they were both ecstatic and satisfied. They both stayed in their seats for a while, before Eugene got up to make tea. Levis had given her jasmine tea so that she could make it in at the academy. To be honest, tea was difficult to make and she failed every time she made tea from scratch. This was why Levis improvised, and made tea sachets. These were made especially for Eugene and all she had to do after that was add in hot or cold water.
"It tastes like flowers." Camille's face brightened up as she thanked Eugene.
Eugene reached for her pocket and handed Camille a sachet of coins. "You are in charge of this dorm from now on. This is the money you will use for the dorm, and also for yourself. This includes your salary, so you can use all of it for whatever you want to." The money she gave Camille was a lot. It was a noble's salary which says a lot. It was basically money for food or anything Camille had to buy for the dorm as well as Camille's wage.
"You can spend all of it and if it runs out, ask me again." Eugene watched Camille nod before she got up and stacked all the plates together, and put them in the sink. That was all she could manage, and If she did anything more, all the plates would go flying or break. Hence she stopped there.
"Thank you for the food. It was great." Eugene said as she watched Camille washing the plates.
"Thank you for enjoying it! It is the first time I've seen someone enjoy it so much." Camille responded.
'Well, then they are missing out.' Eugene thought quietly but didn't say it out loud. She was secretly thinking of opening a restaurant and having Camille work there in the future. Of course, the purpose was to make money, but what's more important than that was to be able to eat without a limit. The more Eugene thought about it, the more reasonable and justified opening a restaurant seemed to be.
And that was the end of their first day in the dorm.
For the rest of the week, Eugene and Camille would be stuck in their dorm, eating food Camille cooked from day to night. When Camille cooked, Eugene would clean the dorm to Camille's horror because that was her job. After 2 days of Camille complaining that Eugene was stealing her job, Eugene gave up cleaning and did as Camille pleased, which was to sit down at a random corner to rest. Of course, resting was boring so Eugene would be stretching, doing circuit training to keep her body fit or read the books she got with Moniqua. And that was how they lived and bonded for the week.
What the both of them didn't know was that there was a lot of commotion on the second day of the week. The commotion happened at the noble's orientation party. Except for Eugene, Aernest, and two noblemen, all of the nobles got into trouble. They were caught having a party of only nobles and were penalized for discrimination. The punishment was detention, which meant having to study before the rest of the other first years. Naturally, this embarrassed the nobles so much. They were embarrassed that they were humiliated in front of the commoners and began investigating who leaked the news of their orientation week.
After four days of detention, the Nobles speculated that it was Eugene who had tattletale on them because she had not stepped out of the dorm once. Not only that, she was seen being very friendly with commoners, not to mention even rooming with one. Though no one knew who did it, they firmly believed that it must be Eugene.
And because they pinpointed that Eugene was the one who leaked their orientation week, they were unable to do anything about it. And that was because Eugene's status was higher than theirs. They couldn't bully her, nor could they degrade her in public. Hence they all informally consented to ignore Eugene from now on. To blindly ignore Eugene as if she did not exist and to not communicate with her.
Her refusal to leave the dorm did not help her reputation; by the seventh day, when she had not yet emerged, rumors of her being aloof and unwilling to socialize with nobles had spread throughout the first years. Eugene's attitude made the other aristocrat children think that Eugene was a spoiled brat. The teacher giving her special treatment also added to them having this opinion of Eugene.
The commoners didn't have the exact same opinions the aristocrat children did. They didn't think that she was spoiled that she didn't want to hang out with her kind but instead thought that she was scary for not wanting to hang out with her kind. Eugene was the most powerful person in the first year, so they were afraid of her. And the rumors did not help to change people's minds. As a result, the commoners, like the nobles, did everything they could to stay out of Eugene's way.
