Chapter 14: Kill Kane

It took Jason not less than twenty seconds to get to Naya's room. He knocked and opened the door. He did not give her a chance or choice to decide whether he was welcome or not. Naya was standing by her bed. Her wardrobe was empty and there were heap of clothes on the bed.

Jason counted about two suitcases that were opened on the bed.

Naya's entire shoe rack was in disarray. Jason stipulated that when she was packing her shoes, she did not exactly do it cordially. She seemed to be in a hurry to get out of the Orphanage.

Jason looked around the room once again. He hesitated; there was no stepping space in the room since they were clothes strewn all over the floor too and few newspapers within Jason's reach. One particular newspaper caught Jason's attention and he picked it up.

HEROS AMONG US: NEW YORK COPS SAVES A KIDNAPPED CHILD

It was the headline of the newspaper Jason was holding. Jason wondered why Naya was keeping an old newspaper. The date on it showed that it was dated two years ago.

It was unknown why Naya appeared oblivious to Jason's new found interest in an old paper, it could be that she was engrossed in the task she was performing or she simply chose to ignore or acknowledge his presence.

After what seemed like a considerably huge amount of seconds, Naya dropped the pink crop top she was holding and spoke to Jason. She still had her back to him.

"I have been keeping an eye on Kane and his career ever since I fled New York City" Naya turned around to gaze at Jason before she made herself comfortable by sitting down on the bed.

"The day I found that Newspaper I came home and I threw up. Hero among us….what a joke! It just didn't seem fair that he was labeled a hero after what he put me through while I am on the run. But it's just life, right? It does not have to make sense"

Naya picked the brown crop Cami-top on the bed and started folding it. Jason decided he had to step on few of her belongings to get to her. He made space on the bed by pushing away some of the clothes and he sat down.

"You can't run forever, Naya. One of these days, you will have to stop running and face Kane" Jason looked at her as he spoke.

"I am very good at running. It is tiring and strenuous but we've got to do what we got to do to stay alive long enough to fight another day"

"How about we fight today? No more looking over your shoulders or staying long enough in a place to blend in and be forgotten in no time. How about we take care of Kane?" Jason kept looking at her. He wanted to make sure Naya understands it was up to her. He was not going to force her to do anything she did not want to do.

"You mean like Kill Kane?"

"I can see why you think that is the best option but you won't be free if you kill Kane. You will be a murderer and it will hunt you for the rest of your life. And that might be worst than running from Kane but if you insist I will pay for the assassination, Naya" Jason did not shiver as he spoke. He had given her his word that he would help her and he was going to see it through even if it meant breaking the law.

Naya held Jason's gaze for a while. She saw the truth and sincerity in his eyes. He was prepared to take a life to protect her. Naya was instinctively drawn to him. Heat rose from Naya's stomach to her chest and gut. Her lips were getting closer and her heart decided to skip a beat as if it was in sync with her stomach, chest and gut. Like they were all playing a spelling game of catch ball with her whole being. It was the closest she had come to feeling something other than indifference towards a man since Kane. Naya could even go far as to say what she was feeling felt like love or at least a close relation of love. A second cousin or something. Their eyes locked and her lips sorted for his.

The smell of his perfume tickled her nose and made the attraction even more obvious. It must be an expensive one since it never wore off. The smell of him was hypnotic beyond reason like it was calling out to her to come closer until they were no barrier between them.

As she drew nearer, a wave of warmth bubbled inside her, she curled her toes in anticipation and waited for the release her body needed from his touched. Except Jason pulled away from her just mere seconds from the best kiss she would have had in awhile.

"Naya, we can't ever do this again. Whatever that was between us is now officially over, I am sorry" Jason felt the pull too but not as much as Naya. And she was a tad disappointed.

"You want us to stop seeing each other"

"Yes" Jason simply said. He could tell her he was in love with someone else but he didn't.

"But if I ask to have my husband killed, you would make it happen?"

"Yes" He answered again

"But killing him is not what you want and it goes against your moral codes?"

"Yes, I would never condone killing" Jason replied again.

"Yet, you are willing to do it if I asked you to?"

"Yes Naya. I would" Jason was sincere.

"You are a good man, Jason. No matter how much you try to hide it, you are a good man. And I would never ask you to do something that goes against your beliefs. And…I am so sorry that I didn't tell you I was married. It is my fault not yours. And if anyone needs to be disgusted, it's me, Jason"

"I know and… it means a lot that you were willing to accept that it was your fault but it takes two to tango. And we didn't exactly do much talking in this relationship, so it is my fault too"

Naya smiled briefly at him. It was time to stop running.
