CHAPTER 35: Get out

"When do you guys leave?" Naya asked.

"Today, I am afraid. We will leave in the evening. I have a meeting with the board and my wife has a contract she wants to pursue" Jason waited a second before he added "I can take Kara with me, if you agree. She will be safer in Nigeria"

"No. We will stick to our deal. If she is in trouble. I will send her to you"

Few minutes later.

Mckenna was enjoying the morning walk along the dusty road more than she like to admit. Kara was ahead of them skipping like she had no care in the world while Jason was holding her hand.

"This place is beautiful" Mckenna whispered to him.

Jason might have a soft spot for the little town but beautiful wasn't a word he would use to describe it. The roads were dusty and the houses old and fragile.

But Malawi gave him something and he was grateful for the country. Maybe Mckenna was right. The place was beautiful.

"Yes. It is. I know this small bar we can grab a snack and drink" Jason beamed up at the prospect of showing Mckenna the country that was like a second home to him.

He pointed to the smaller trail they have to take.

"Come on, Kara. Your father is taking us to get a snack!" Mckenna called out to Jason's daughter.

"I am coming, Umma" The little girl ran back to them and instead of taking Jason's hand, she took Mckenna's hand. And together, the walked ahead of Jason.

Jason couldn't help but be grateful.

Mckenna conversed with her stepdaughter as they walked.

"So, do you like school?"

Kara thought about it briefly before she answered.

"I am very smart. So, I guess I do like school but most kids don't like that"

Mckenna was amused the way she said kids like she wasn't one.

"Who cares what most kids think, if you have the privilege to be extraordinary....be extraordinary, Kara. Extraordinary people they don't just rule the world, they change it" Mckenna wondered whether she should be giving advice just yet to the little girl.

Kara was quiet for a little while before she answered "I like you. You are smart too"

"Well, I like you too Kara" Mckenna spared a smile at the girl before she took off ahead of them.

"What was that all about?" Jason placed his hand on her waist.

"I think we just bonded, isn't that great!?"

Everything was turning up great for him. He was married to the love of his life who was making an effort to get to know his daughter. His mother was finally rid of his father and he had a better relationship with his sister. In that moment, everything was okay... everything was perfect.

Jason simply kissed her.

Few hours later, they returned to Nigeria leaving Kara behind.

***************

Few months later.

Naya's eyes flew open instantly. Someone was inside the duplex and was moving in her house. Naya jumped right to the ground and pulled out the .45 gun under her bed. She checked for bullets. Not enough to protect Kara and herself.

Crap! Kara!

Naya knew she had to get to her daughter before her crazy ex husband finds her. She was wearing just shorts and singlet. She had no time to change into another appropriate dress.

It took all her savings but she was able to build the crawl space that connected her room to Kara's. Naya pressed the secret button just hidden behind the night stand and the steel door opened.

She forced herself inside and for someone that was claustrophobic; she was taking it rather well. Soon, she was in Kara's room. Naya first opened the wardrobe and took out Kara's go-to bag. She pulled out a gown from the wardrobe and she heard Kara stir on the bed.

"Mama?" Kara sounded confused.

Naya tapped on the hidden compartment inside the wardrobe and moved out another gun. Kara was on her feet now.

"Mama, what is going on?"

Naya threw the gown at her and Kara saw the gun. Any normal child would flinch but Not Kara. She had seen enough guns in the house to be comfortable around one. Her mother even got a stun gun for her in case of emergence. Naya had made her swear that she would never tell her father about it. Jason would go crazy if he found out.

"Kara, it is time baby. I have to get you to your father. You are going to Nigeria"

Kara grabbed the gown and pulled it over her head. She opened her drawer and took her stun gun and placed it inside her go-to bag pack.

"He found us, didn't he?" she asked as she wore her sneakers.

"Your father will keep you safe. You can't stay with me anymore"

Kara took a hair band and held her hair in place. It was ironic that she was on the run from her biological psycho father and the only one to can keep her safe was her adopted father, Jason Yagazie.

Naya pressed another button that opened another crawl hole to outside. Kara grabbed her I-pad and disappeared into the hole with Naya right behind.

Soon, they were inside the Toyota Camry outside. Naya turned on the ignition of the car and the front light switch on and she froze. There in front of her was Kane wearing all black with a knife.

"Mama!" Kara screamed.

"Put on your seat belt, Kara and close your eyes!"

Kara shot her eyes tightly. Naya sped off, if Kane insisted on being in her way, she was going to run him over. She went straight at him but Kane got out of the way so fast as she drove out of the orphanage.

"Kara, call…"

"Daddy, I am already doing that!" Kara said trying to sound brave but she was scared.

"Kara? Aren't you supposed to be asleep?" Jason's voice sounded sleepy.

"Daddy, he found us! He found me!"

Jason sat up immediately.

"Jason, I need you to call the man that can get our daughter out of Malawi to Nigeria, now. I will stay behind and make sure Kane doesn't follow her"

"No. You will get on that Jet with Kara and come to Nigeria. Both of you will be safe here" Jason ordered her.

"Jason! This is not up for a debate. Keep our daughter safe…I'm trusting you to keep her away from Kane" Naya said and gave the phone to Kara.

"Daddy!"

"Don't worry, Bean. Everything will be alright"

"I am scared, daddy" Kara was always honest with him.

"I know baby girl! Everything will be okay. I am going to hang up now to make plans to bring you over to me. I love you"

"I love you too. Bye"

Two hours later, Naya was in an empty field waiting for a private Jet to take her daughter to safety. As soon as she saw it, she crouched down to Kara's height to talk to her. She hated this part.

"Don't go, mama!"

"I love you, okay? Listen to your father and McKenna. I will come to you as soon as I can. I will find you" Naya took out a necklace inside her bag placed it on her neck.

Kara hugged her. "I love you, mama"

Soon, Kara was inside the private jet. Just like she was taught, she found a secret place to hide while she was flown to Nigeria. She held her stun gun tightly. Soon she would be with her real father.

Naya watched the jet fly away as tears streamed down her face. She checked her phone, the tracker on Kara was on and she can track her whereabouts from Malawi. She entered her car and drove off towards the orphanage. She wanted to be sure that everyone was safe.

When she got to the orphanage, everyone was outside including Veronica, the manager. They had heard the commotion earlier on. Naya was afraid that Kane might have hurt someone else. Immediately, she stopped the car, she raced to Veronica.

"Is everyone okay? Ms. Veronica, is everyone okay?"

"Yes. All the children are accounted for" Veronica told her. Without thinking, Naya simply hugged her.

"What is going on, Naya?" Veronica asked her.

"He found us. I don't know how but Kane found us. He was in my fucking house! He was going to kill me and take my daughter! Damn it! I should have let Jason take her as soon as she was adopted" Naya broke down in tears.

"Naya, don't you get it. You kept her safe for six years. You did your job as her mother"

"Well, in five hours she will be in Nigeria and it will be Jason's job to protect her. God help that family" Naya muttered.

"I don't think Kane is mad enough to go after the most powerful family in Africa.. God help Kane because now, he is in Jason's territory!".
