Chapter 56: Great things
"Because you love me?" McKenna asked him.
"No baby, because we didn't sign a prenup and you will take half of my wealth with you" Jason tried to keep a straight face but he failed miserably at it "Of course, it's because I love you. Because you are my life. Because there is no me without you"
McKenna allowed the tears to fall down her face. "I love you too"
She hugged him. "So, what are you holding?"
Jason gave her the paper "Oh, I am just suing you for emotional distress and for breaking my heart. My lawyer says you could pay me up to two hundred and fifty thousand naira if you sign this document. And the documents also says you will double the payment if you try to leave me again"
McKenna frowned "really?"
"Of course not" Jason found her facial expression amusing. It was so easy.
"Ha-ha, your jokes are wacky. So, what are you holding then?"
Jason gave the document to her.
"It is the deed to this house. It's yours. It's just my way of making sure you don't ever leave this house again"
McKenna looked surprised. She wasn't expecting to be rewarded for leaving in the first place.
"I don't understand, Jason. I don't want your house" McKenna looked up and stared straight into his eyes.
"Well, I figured you are incapable of asking Kara and I to leave your house. There is no way the woman I know and love will kick out our daughter and I out and leave us destitute" Jason scratched the back of his head as he explained.
McKenna dimmed her eyes considerably "You own half of Abuja, Jason. You are never going to be a destitute"
"Jeez, I am just trying to make a gesture! Can't you just go with it without remaining me that I am rich?" Jason had an exasperated face.
"Sorry" McKenna murmured. "I appreciate the gesture but I don't want the house. But I promise never to leave again"
McKenna tore up the document and hugged him. Jason hugged her back.
He liked the way her hair smelt "You know that was a photocopy, right? That you tore that up doesn't actually mean or change anything"
McKenna pulled away and gave him a look.
"Oh, that was gesture too. Got it" he pulled her back into his hands.
Three days later.
Jason could feel the rise and fall of her chest as she snuggled closer to him on the sofa...his pretty dove. Untainted and pure in every single aspect of her life, Jason figured he must have done something right somewhere in his life to deserve McKenna and Kara.
"Have you heard from Naya?" McKenna asked him.
Jason became uncomfortable suddenly. There was nothing like discussing an ex girlfriend with the wife lying on your chest that doesn't scream uncomfortable.
"McKenna, I may require you to care about Kara but we don't have to talk about Naya" Jason spoke softly to her.
"Jason, it is fine. Whether we acknowledge it or not, she is a part of our lives forever. She is family and... Family take care of family"
Jason cleared his throat. He wondered whether this was a trap or a test set by his beautiful wife. It made him more uncomfortable.
"Well, she called few days ago and asked...well, more like demanded we enroll Kara in Karate class"
McKenna sat upright abruptly and turned to stare at her husband. "And what did you tell her?"
"That we would consider piano class or maybe pottery, she didn't like that. She hung up on me.... which kinda hurts"
McKenna exhaled and returned to the position on his chest. The idea of Kara fighting or getting hurt while learning karate was unthinkable.
"Good"
Jason exhaled and relaxed. It felt like he just dodge a bullet.
Up in her room, Kara tossed on the bed. She was asleep. She frowned as if she was encountering something unpleasant or someone unpleasant, then she woke up with a start.
She tried to get her breathing under control. It was time like this that she would go to her father and somehow, he would remind her that everything was going to be fine.
This was the fifth time since she came to Nigeria that she has had the same dream. But it was more like reliving a memory. The horrible memory of her mama switching on the car's light to find Kane standing there with a knife.
Kara couldn't get the image out of her head.
Slipping her feet into her slippers, she went in search of her father. She was halfway into the living room when she saw her father and her Umma lying on the sofa together.
Kara knew how easy it would be for her to walk up to her parents and tell them about her dream and have her father hold her but she also remembered seeing him clutch his chest in a hospital room. It gave her second thoughts about interrupting their time together.
She turned to race back to her room when she accidentally hit her foot on the stool and alerted everyone.
"Kara? Is that you, Sweetheart?" Jason called out.
Left with no other option, Kara walked into the living room.
Jason knew she had a nightmare again.
"Did you have another bad dream, bean?"
Kara blinked twice "I just want water"
McKenna sat upright. The little girl looked frightened. Pointing to the bottle of water on the table, McKenna asked her to take a sip and she did.
"Do you want to lie here with us for a second, Kara?" McKenna asked her.
"There is not enough space. I will go back to room" Kara suggested.
"Come on, you can lie on your father's chest. It's as comfortable as a pillow and that is not a lie" McKenna smiled at her and she smiled back.
Kara settled in between them comfortably. She liked it. Jason kissed her hair before whispering thank you to McKenna.
"We need a bigger sofa, Umma" Kara giggled as McKenna tickled her abdomen.
"Yes, we do!" Jason agreed with her.
****
The air hostess smiled warmly as she announced to everyone what to do in case of an emergency.
Amazing Donna paid just a molecule of attention to her.
It wasn't her first flight from New York to Nigeria. She pushed the transparent glasses she was wearing and focused on the phone she was holding.
It wouldn't be long until everyone is asked to turn off their phones. She had never really understood why but she had enough sense not to argue with planes or hostesses. And definitely do everything in her power to land safely at her destination.
But she had this business deal she had to schedule since her assistant was on maternity leave. Who knew booking a venue for a conference was so difficult?
Clicking the submit button on the online venue booking, she waited for confirmation from M and M venue. And as soon as she saw confirmed, she smiled softly.
At least this way she wouldn't hear from her father Jackson Donna how much she disappointed him by not landing the business contract from Donald's industry. After all she was only competing for said contract with her sister, McKenna Yagazie. Well, may the best sister win and they have made a pact not to let it affect their relationship.
Amazing put her cell phone away. She didn't even notice the man sitting beside her until he spoke.
"I see you won against technology"
His voice was deep and smooth like he was a singer. She couldn't see every part of his face but he was black probably a Nigerian living in New York.
"I see you were spying on me" Amazing raised her eyebrow.
"Actually, I was reading your countenance. I find technology annoying too" he replied.
"I love technology. I just hate online booking of anything. It's exhausting and demanding" Amazing smiled to hide the pressure she was feeling.
"Are you visiting Nigeria for the first time?" The man asked her.
"No. I live there. It's my country" Amazing answered even though she knew where the conversation was leaning towards.
"Oh, sorry. You just speak with an English accent that's all. I didn't mean anything by the question" the man apologized almost immediately.
"That's okay, I grew up in England. At least I spent my first fifteen years there" Amazing explained to him "But I can lose the accent if you are uncomfortable"
The man smiled at her. His eyes were warm and inviting, the eyes looked like they were used to finding lost things. He had this air around him like he would make a good politician or any authoritative position.
"No. I like the accent" He relaxed further into his seat "It's my first time going to Nigeria....any tips?"
"Just be super smart or you will regret it. My country is full of smart people" Amazing told him.
The man nodded like he understood "Thanks. So what's your name?"
"I am Amazing"
"I know you are Amazing but I was asking for your name" The man had a little smile.
"No. Seriously, my name is... Amazing"
"Oh sorry. It's nice to meet you, Amazing"
"So, tell me yours" Amazing asked of him.
"Hello, I am Kane"
