Chapter 59 - Running From My Fears

Chapter 59: Running from my fears

Kara's eyes locked with the creepy figure behind the ticket stale. Her eyes widened immediately she recognized him from the picture her mother gave her when she turned six years old.

Kara blinked. She could be wrong. The whole reason she left her home in Malawi was to get away from Kane and this was Nigeria. And her father was the most powerful man here; Kane wouldn't dare search for her in Nigeria.

She was wrong.

Please, let me be wrong! Please, let me be wrong! Kara said over and over in her mind as she took out her iPad from her backpack. She went to pictures and she saw Kane's picture. She looked up and stared at the man that was now walking towards her.

Her eyes widened even more and take on a hunted look. She willing her little legs to run but she couldn't move. She was rooted to the spot. Even in her catatonic state, her eyes managed to dart towards where Elixir was sitting.

Scream for help! Kara's mind kept telling her as the man was getting closer. Her mouth opened in a silent scream and when she noticed no sound came out, she pressed her lips together, making them all but disappear.

Kara has never felt such soul wrecking terror before.

Elixir spoke softly as she discussed with her son.

"Mom, I can't fire someone for no apparent reason" Kara's father said over the phone.

"Yes, you can. You just don't want to" Elixir answered.

Elixir first noticed the way Kara was rooted to the spot. Something was wrong; she could feel it in her bones. The last time she felt like that was when her son Jason was six years old and she had been right. Her boy was in trouble because when she got to his son, he was in the school clinic because he had fainted during football practice.

Now she was having the same feeling again. She tried to shrug it off.

"How do you know about Elena?" Jason asked his mother over the phone.

Elixir was now distracted from the phone conversation. Her grandbaby's body was impossibly still and pale like blood had been drained from her powerful little body or she was fished out of a cold river after hours of submergence.

Maybe she was just over reacting and her Spidery sense was off.

"The girl ran your business successfully for two years, she is a game changer and I make certain I am acquainted with game changers. I have to go baby, Kara needs my attention"

Elixir hung up immediately. She saw the figure moving towards her granddaughter and the terrified way Kara stood clutching her iPad.

"Kara!" She yelled her name as she walked towards her.

Kara turned immediately. It seemed like her grandmother's voice brought her out her catatonic state.

"Grandma!" Kara called out to Elixir.

Kane stopped midway. The yelling between his daughter and the woman she called grandma was beginning to draw attention to him.

Elixir was almost running when she got to where Kara was standing.

"Kara! Baby, what is it?" Elixir asked as she pulled the child closer to herself.

"I saw...I saw..." Kara looked around but Kane was gone. She was surprised. Had she imagined it? Was her mind playing tricks on her?

She wrapped her little arms around her grandmother. The terror she felt and was still to an extent feeling, slowly started slipping through her body.

"Are you alright, little mama?" Elixir asked her.

"I want to go home. I want my daddy" Kara was certain.

Elixir nodded and took her hand. And together they walked to her car. She made sure that Kara was buckled properly at the back seat before she entered the driver's side.

Even as she turned the car's ignition on, Elixir watched her grandchild from the rearview mirror.

"Are you sure you don't want to spend the night at grandma's place, little mama?" Elixir asked her.

Kara shook her head rigorously. "I want my daddy"

Elixir smiled softly but she couldn't shake the feeling that someone had tried to kidnap her son's daughter, she knew the mansion's security was stronger and up to date than the duplex her son currently occupied.

"How about I tell your parents to come over to the Mansion for a sleepover? Would that be okay?" Elixir asked her and she nodded.

Elixir drove off.

Kane watched from the shadows as his kid was placed inside the car. It took all of his self control to stop himself from running after them but he knew if he was going to win this war, he needed patience and planning. And so, he took note of the car's plate's number.

"I will find you, Kara" He murmured as he watched them drive off.

As soon as Elixir drove into the mansion, she took Kara up to her bedroom and she excused herself to make a phone call.

She dialed Jason's number twice but he didn't pick up. She was about to dial it for the third time when Luca came outside and saw her.

"Hi, Auntie. You were right about the..."Luca saw the look on Elixir's face and he became worried.

"Is everything alright? Is this about my father? He will come back for you, I promise" Luca spoke softly as he moved closer.

"No. Of course not, it's not about your father. Jason's not picking up his calls" Elixir answered him.

"And that's unusual?" Luca asked her.

"No. But I need to talk to him"

Luca had never seen her father's girlfriend worry so much before. He grabbed her hand and squeezed gently.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Luca asked her.

Elixir wondered for a brief second why her own son won't be as attentive as Luca.

"I don't know what I saw but I am almost certain someone tried to grab my grandbaby today" Elixir for the first time voice her fears out loud.

Luca's countenance changed. If someone tried to grab Kara then the cops needs to know. And he wanted to tell Elixir but she spoke again.

"Or am I just seeing things, Luca? Ever since I picked up interested in politics, I can't shake this feeling that I will be putting my family in danger. Maybe, I shouldn't run for the governor's election. I probably scared my grandbaby today when I started yelling her name"

Elixir knew it wasn't in her nature to back down from a difficult fight but for her family, she would walk through hell barefooted. For her family, she was willing to throw in the towel before the fight.

"Are you sure, Elixir? You told me that running will ensure that minorities are heard and promises are kept. You called your soon to be opponent a whining thieving tad that with the IQ of a village goat and then you further said..." Luca was interrupted by Elixir as she completed the statement for him.

"....no offense to goats everywhere in the world. I said that Luca and it's true but..."

"Aunt Elixir, you've never been one to sit still... not when there is work to do. Jason would tell you the same thing if he was here"

"I would?" Jason's voice startled both Luca and Elixir.

Elixir held her chest "Good lord, Child you are gave me a heart attack!"

Jason chuckled before kissing her cheek. He was alone.

"Sorry, ma. I just saw that I missed your calls on my way to the mansion. What's going on?"

Jason asked as he ignored Luca.

"Hey, Jason!" Luca waved as a greeting.

"Hey, yourself" Jason said sarcastically to Luca and his mother hit his abdomen with the back of her hand like she was telling him to behave.

"Sorry, Luca" Jason murmured and as a second thought he added "McKenna wants me to invite you over for dinner at our place. But I am sure you are busy, Luca"

Luca shook his head, he knew that Jason was reluctant about the invitation but if his father eventually marries Jason's mother then they will be family. It always pays to have at least one brother on his side.

"No...No, my schedule is wide open. Tell my bestie I will see her tomorrow for dinner with her and my future brother"

Luca yelled as he walked away.

"He is too old to be saying bestie and we are not brothers" Jason murmured to himself but loud enough for Elixir to hear.

"Oh come on, the boy just wants you to like him" Elixir replied.

Jason shrugged it off. He had more importantly things to think about other than Luca Spencer.

"What was Luca talking about? What do I need to know about?"

Jason asked his mother but suddenly her face lighted up with a smile and she was looking behind Jason.

Elixir might have been smiling but her heart raced and her mind jumped from one thing to another. Should she tell the truth even when she could be wrong or should she go with an easier lie until she gathered all her facts?
