Chapter 113: Another Banger!
Elixir understood her son's anger and she was a step ahead of him. There was no way she was letting her grandbaby leave the country with no intention of coming back to the family again.
She hated that Tamara was taking Jason's rejection badly and she was taking EJ away from her family just to spite him. There was no way in hell Elixir Yagazie was going to let that happen.
"I am glad you feel that way because…I filed for permanent custody of EJ, Jason" Elixir told him and took out some papers from the briefcase behind her and showed them to him.
"You did what?!" Jason screamed at her.
"Watch your tone, boy! Who do you think you are screaming at?" Elixir warned him.
"Mom, I am not taking Tamara to court" Jason stated as a matter of fact.
"Why not? You were ready to take Naya to court for the custody of Kara, why is Tamara so different!" Elixir wasn't bulging.
"For one, EJ doesn't have a psychopath as a biological father and it's not right to bully Tammy. She is my friend" Jason shook his head like he still couldn't believe that his mother would do such a thing to him.
When he thought of filing for custody, he was in a bad mood and wasn't thinking straight but his mother did this on purpose.
"You told me in Malawi that it wasn't right to take a child away from their mother. Why are you doing this to Tammy?" Jason asked her.
Elixir exhaled.
"She has feelings for you and she is using my grandbaby as a bargaining chip. I won't stand for it, Jason" Elixir was adamant.
"It's not your decision to file for custody. When will you stop meddling in my life? You always find a way to make my life extra complicated, jeez mother! You did the same thing in Canada when you figured out that I was going to be happy with Mckenna and now this?" Jason took off his seat belt and opened the car door.
"Where are you going?" Elixir yelled at her son.
"Where else? I have to talk to Tammy and tell her that once again that one of my parents decided they know what is best for me! And frankly I don't want to talk to you anymore" Jason got down from the car.
He flagged down a cab and entered.
Elixir sat there for a while. She still remembered the incident Jason was talking about, like it was yesterday.
It was a day they both said hurtful things to each other. Elixir wasn't about to forget it in a hurry.
Jason calmed down just a little in the cab. And everything he told his mother in anger replayed in his head.
Was it fair to compare her to James? This was the second time he did it.
The first time was in Canada four years ago.
(Four years ago.)
Jason was in a good mood.
He opened the kitchen cabinet and took out a tin of tea, the one his mother bought for his sake since he liked it.
As he stirred the tea, he heard footsteps and turned to see his mother walk inside the kitchen with one of the house keepers. She was comfortably dressed in casual jeans and v-neck shirt.
"Good morning, Elixir!" Jason was loud and he kissed his mother's cheek.
Elixir was taken aback. Her son was unusually happy and cheerful. It was unnatural.
"Jason, I know you are a grown man but no matter how old you are, please call me Mom" Elixir said with a smile and rubbed his back.
"Or I could just call you, pretty lady" Jason joked.
"Okay, no...I still prefer Mom. Why are you so cheerful this morning? Come to think of it, you disappeared last night"
Elixir took the cup of tea Jason made and took a sip, before Jason could object.
"Thanks baby, it's just the way I like it" Elixir sat on the seat while the housekeeper excused herself and left
"Of course"
Jason took out another cup and began the process of making another batch of tea for his girlfriend. He liked calling McKenna his girlfriend. It was in the beginning when he was trying to win her back.
"I was hoping to talk to you about something this morning, Jason. Please have a seat" Elixir gestured for her son to sit beside her.
"Mom, can we talk later? I just have to go right now!"
"Jason stop! Please....there is no easy way to say this and it's going to be harder than I thought it would be"
Elixir sighed heavily and let her head drop for a minute. She didn't want to do this but she had to. She had no other choice.
"Mom, just say it. I don't think there is anything you can tell me that would make me less happy. You can tell me I am an alien and I won't mind" Jason took a seat and prayed silently she would speak up before the tea went cold. But she just sat there.
"Mom! Speak up. I don't have all day"
"You can't stay in Canada. You have to go back to Malawi"
Jason froze. For the sake of everything he held dear, he really wished his mother didn't just say that to him. Few hours ago, she was happy he was staying back in Canada for love and now, she was telling him he had to go back to Malawi? No way! Not a day in hell.
He turned slowly and pushed the cup of tea in front of him away in both anger and frustration. His countenance had changed, he had an expressionless facade.
He looked his mother directly in the eyes since he wanted to be sure he heard her and understood what she was asking of him.
"You want me to go back to Malawi? Is that what you are telling me?" Jason said in an icy cold voice.
If it was any other person, maybe an employee or a business partner, they would probably pee in their pants as Jason's voice at that moment was deadly to put mildly.
"Don't take that tone with me, Child. I invented that tone, remember?" Elixir was unfazed. She just kept sipping her tea and paid no attention to her son's murderous glare.
"Why the sudden change of mind, Mother?"
"I got a call from my contact at the IRS. One of the guests that came last night and Andrew Spencer will be under investigation by the IRS starting this morning. The accounts and charities they support will be under scrutiny. And Jason, I don't need to tell you that the orphanage can't be under scrutiny. We won't be taking the donations from last night. You still have to go back and save my mother's orphanage" even as Elixir spoke she didn't spare a glance at her angry son. After years of running a business, she had come to realize that it was better to take away emotions while making a business decision. It was why she was talking to her son as she would any of her employees.
"When do you think I will stop paying for you and my father's screw ups? Will I get to live my life without your mistakes and James's weighing me down?" Jason stared at her coldly.
He swore in that moment he hated her even if it was just a minute.
"Jason, I know you are upset but try not to say things you will regret later"
****
His mother had been right then and she was right now. He was regretting everything.
As Jason sat in the cab he was reminded once again that even though Elixir meddles, she does it for his interest while James does it for selfish reasons. It wasn't kind to compare both of them.
After he fixes things with Tamara, he was going to have a talk with his mother and correct that notion.
Jason got to the mansion soon enough to find Tamara carrying a bag in one hand and holding on to EJ with the other.
Jason rushed to meet them.
"Tammy, what is going on?" Jason asked fast enough to pick up the child that fled into his arms.
"Jason, put her down!" Tammy said through her clenched jaw.
Jason did. He didn't want to fight but he didn't appreciate the tone Tammy was using on him too.
"Junior, can you ask the housekeeper for a bottle of water for me, sweetheart?" Jason asked his daughter and she took off towards the mansion.
As soon as EJ left, Tamara slapped him. Jason placed his feelings aside. He hated it when he was slapped but then maybe he has that kind of face, a slap-able face.
"How dare you try to take her? Is it because you are richer than me, asshole? I won't let you!" Tammy was vibrating with anger.
"Tamara, I am not trying to take EJ away…but then again, it was the only way to stop you from leaving with her permanently. I know you booked a ticket out of the country. You are trying to take my daughter from me!"
Tamara blinked.
"No, I didn't!"
