Chapter 40

Looking at the bright city lights on her way home, Gu Xi suddenly felt very tired and bitter.

Qin Mo and Tang Xinru were getting engaged, but she has yet to show her remorse for it at all! She even needed to announce that she and Pei Qian are together at Qin Mo’s engagement banquet.

‘Gu Xi, is this really the life you wanted?’

‘Not only did you fall out of love, but you also lost your soul!’

When the traffic light turned red, she hit the brakes. Placing her head on the steering wheel, her eyes started to get moist.

She could feel a prickling sensation in her eyes.

The traffic light had already turned green, but it was only after the cars behind her had started honking that she sat up straight.

The night breeze blew through her hair, causing it to cover half of her face.

She softly chuckled in self-mockery before driving back to her condominium apartment.

Much to her surprise, Lin Yunzhi’s car was also parked below her house. Upon seeing Gu Xi’s car, Lin Yunzhi got off hers.

“What brings you here?” Gu Xi alighted from her car and closed the car door.

Lin Yunzhi looked at her. “I was worried about you, so I came over.”

She took out a bottle of wine. “Do you want to have a drink with me?”

Gu Xi laughed. “I know you. You are here because you were bored.”

“So…” Lin Yunzhi raised her eyebrows.

Gu Xi held her hand. “Come on. Didn’t you say that you wanted to drink?”

Ten minutes later, they stood on the terrace of her condominium apartment while looking down at the whole of City H.

Since Gu Xi’s condominium apartment was located in the most prosperous area of City H, the night view and scenery was really beautiful.

The night breeze was very strong. With a glass of red wine in her hands, Gu Xi’s fair face looked especially dreamy under the beautiful city lights.

Lin Yunzhi stood beside her, and she asked in an indifferent tone of voice, “Are you still thinking about him?”

Gu Xi lowered her head and pursed her lips. She then shook her head. “Nope.”

She raised her head to meet Lin Yunzhi’s eyes. “Considering the type of people we are, do you think we can ever give our unconditional love to a man?”

She lightly chuckled. “We can’t.”

Taking her and Qin Mo as an example. It was impossible for them to get together even if she wanted to.

Those beautiful childhood memories were just a fairytale, after all.

The truth was, he forgot about her…

Lin Yunzhi looked at her for a long while before saying in a gentle voice, “Gu Xi, you don’t have to live so tiringly.”

Gu Xi placed her elbow on the railings and smiled. “I am not tired. I am simply doing what I am responsible for.”

“Does this include sacrificing yourself to please Pei Qian? Is it for the financial benefits?” Lin Yunzhi narrowed her eyes and looked at her.

Gu Xi pursed her lips for she was unable to reply to her questions.

Lin Yunzhi placed her hand on top of Gu Xi’s hand. “Gu Xi, if you really like Pei Qian, both of you can date like a normal couple. You don’t have to do this…”

Gu Xi raised her head to face her. She had always known that Yunzhi was a very intelligent person.

It was as if nothing could escape her eyes. However, Gu Xi really hoped that she would not be so quick on catching on to things this time.

She looked away, and she softly said, “I don’t like Pei Qian.”

However, Lin Yunzhi refused to let her off. “If you don’t like him, stay away from him. Gu Xi, don’t you know how scary that man is? Are you even aware of the schemes that he had plotted?”

Gu Xi gave a light chuckle. “So what if I am aware of it?”

She looked at Lin Yunzhi. “He could give me twenty percent of the Gu Group’s stocks… why shouldn’t I accept his offer?”

“Even if it meant that you have to sacrifice yourself?” Lin Yunzhi sneered, “This isn’t the Gu Xi I knew!”

Gu Xi raised his head and drank her wine. “That’s because you never understood me in the past!”

“Do you understand yourself, then? Why did you agree to Pei Qian’s offer… Was it because of Qin Mo’s betrayal? Or you didn’t even dislike Pei Qian in the first place?” Lin Yunzhi looked at her with a focused gaze. “Think before you speak!”

Gu Xi light chuckled. “Secretary Lin, you think too much!”

Lin Yunzhi scoffed. “For you to address me as Secretary Lin when it’s off-work hours, you must have really hit the ceiling!”

She raised her glass. “Alright, I won’t force you to give me an answer. Your words are as stubborn as your temper anyway.”

Gu Xi laughed and finished her glass of wine.

Embracing the night breeze, she looked at Lin Yunzhi and poured another glass of wine for both of them. “Yunzhi, just take it as if we are celebrating me falling out of love.”

Lin Yunzhi helplessly shook her head and drank the glass of wine with her.

Both of them finished the bottle of wine Lin Yunzhi bought and two other precious bottles of wine that Gu Xi had in her house…

With the effect of the alcohol kicking in, both of them were a little drunk.

Lin Yunzhi went to rest in the guest room while Gu Xi stayed at the terrace until the break of the day.

The sun loomed over the horizon in the curtain of night. Gu Xi swayed her glass and softly chuckled. “Qin Mo, happy wedding!”

From now on, she would have nothing to do with him anymore.

Qin Mo would belong to somebody else in the future. He would be Tang Xinru’s fiancé. How ironic!

‘Gu Xi, he’s not yours anymore!’

She raised her head and drank a huge gulp of her wine. The mellow wine slid down her throat as smooth as silk; however, it was unable to console her throbbing heart.

When Lin Yunzhi woke up in the afternoon, she found Gu Xi sleeping on the couch with the window still opened. She did not even put a blanket over herself.

She shook her head in disapproval and walked over to her. She reached out to put a blanket over her and then patted her. “Gu Xi, go back to your room to sleep.”

Gu Xi turned around, and she instinctively mumbled, “Qin… Mo…”

Lin Yunzhi’s body froze. After a brief moment had passed, she touched Gu Xi’s face and pulled a helpless smile.

‘This foolish brat is so stubborn!’

She was a very sentimental person and she probably… could not forget Qin Mo.

Lin Yunzhi was aware of the type of relationship Qin Mo and Gu Xi had. She did not know it directly from Gu Xi, of course. It was just that she had secretly read Gu Xi’s diary before and read everything about Qin Mo.

As such, Lin Yunzhi knew that Qin Mo held a special existence in her heart.

Regardless of their beautiful memories in the past, the reality was just so cruel.

Given Lin Yunzhi’s heartless personality, she could not remember any nice gestures a random boy did for her when she was young. She got over things easily, for example, Song Yazhan.

When she was in university, she wooed him for two to three years, but Song Yazhan had always ignored her, much less felt touched by her gestures.

Back then, she was so crazy for him. It was as if he was only the person who existed in this world.

When she graduated, his heartlessness defeated her and all of his admirers. However, Lin Yunzhi refused to admit because they never got together in the first place.

Neither was she wishy-washy nor was she a sentimental person unlike that fool, Gu Xi.

Gu Xi never understood how precious her body was. How could she be bought over with merely twenty percent of the Gu Group’s share?

Actually, everyone knew that it was because of Qin Mo… It was because of him that Gu Xi became dispirited.

And Pei Qian just managed to get hold of that weakness. Pei Qian was really shameless.

However, if she had to make a choice between Gu Xi feeling sad each time she saw Qin Mo or feel angry whenever she saw Pei Qian…

She would rather choose the latter.

All of a sudden, she felt that her palm was getting a little hot and realized that Gu Xi was having a fever.
