Chapter 119: She Saved My Life Before
Zheng Jing eventually came around, because Jing Yichen not only agreed to offer manpower but also economic support and the requisite approvals from the higher ups.
Zheng Jing couldn’t come up with any reason to not get started right away.
Resultantly, from noon on the very same day, phones of Jing Yiran and all his aides were tapped.
Shangguan Ning stayed in the hospital for another two days before she was able to go back home.
She felt much better. Apart from random headaches, that bothered her every now and then, she had nothing to worry about.
The last two days had been an eye opener for Ning. She learnt how her body went into shock when she was forced to drink the cocktail that had been drugged. She got to know that it was Grandpa Mu who rescued her from the clutches of death.
If it hadn’t been for Jing Yichen, who saved her at the right time, she may have lost her life.
Jing Yichen still felt quite guilty about the entire episode. He felt that if it wasn’t for his carelessness, all of this wouldn’t have happened. If he had been a bit more cautious, Jing Yiran wouldn’t have had this opportunity to take advantage of Shangguan Ning.
Jing Yichen had no knowledge that Shangguan Ning had been unwell for a day and a half, before he got home from his business trip.
Jing Yichen knew that Tang Yun had met with Shangguan Ning but he didn’t know what had Tang Yun said to Ning, that upset her to this extent. He was lying in bed and holding Shangguan Ning in his arms, when he explained to her lovingly, “Ning, no matter what Tang Yun tells you in the future, please don’t believe her. If you have any questions, come and ask me. You and she are different people by nature. You are naïve and can be easily manipulated. There have been times that, even I have fallen for her sob stories.”
Shangguan Ning nodded, still leaning against his chest. “I understand.”
Realising that she sounded unconvinced, Jing Yichen asked her, “Ning. Is there anything you want to say to me?”
When he returned from Australia, all those nights ago, she had been very upset with him. He understood now, that her disdainful attitude would’ve been on account of what Tang Yun would’ve said to her.
Shangguan Ning smiled and said, “I did, but now I don’t.”
Shangguan Ning had thought about what Tang Yun had said to her. She concluded that she would rather believe Jing Yichen over any of the nonsense that Tang Yun had spoken. Jing Yichen had assured Ning repeatedly, that only she was his first love.
When she met him for the first time, she had known how cold and indifferent he could be.
If he, with the kind of person that he was, had really done all that Tang Yun had said, then he must have really felt something for her.
Anyway, Tang Yun was Jing Yichen’s past. His past did not matter any more. As long as Ning was the woman whom Jing Yichen loved now, the rest was not important.
In his arms, she felt happy and cared for. She felt like she was a giggly teenager who had fallen in love for the first time.
Shangguan Ning chose to not discuss this topic any further and trust him.
He moved his arms around, so that she could be in a more comfortable position. He explained calmly, “Ning, I give Tang Yun all this importance, not because I love her. I protect her and grant all her requests because I owe it to her. She… she has saved my life before. She put her life in danger and didn’t even think twice about it.”
Shangguan Ning sat up. She had never expected Jing Yichen to finally open up and speak about what transpired between him and Tang Yun, all those years ago.
She saw Jing Yichen reminiscing about the past, as he spoke. Apparently, the memory of that time must’ve been an unpleasant one because she saw him stress. Even thinking back to those days, still troubled him after all these years. Maybe that’s why he chose to never speak of it.
She held him tightly, wanting to comfort him. To tell him that it was alright, he had her now.
Jing Yichen was a man who feared nothing. To see him feel so helpless, was disheartening.
So Tang Yun saved Jing Yichen’s life. She wondered what had followed that.
Jing Yichen continued, “I thought that she was no more. There was no way that she could have made it out alive. The only reason I never gave up looking for her was because her body had still not been found. That was the only thing that gave me hope of her being alive. I looked for her everywhere. In all of A city and then in all the countries I could, until I finally found her.”
Shangguan Ning stayed silent for a moment and then asked, “If she was still alive, why didn’t she come looking for you?”
If Tang Yun had cared so much about Jing Yichen, as she had claimed, then how come she didn’t look for Jing Yichen. She claimed to be his fiancée. If she were alive, why did she wait for ten years for Jing Yichen to find her?
“She said she lost her memory.” Jing Yichen said, as if he had heard all of Shangguan Ning’s unspoken questions. “She claims that she regained most of her memory over the last two years.”
Even though Shangguan Ning believed Tang Yun’s story, Jing Yichen still didn’t buy it. He had met people over the last few years, who had lost their memory and then regained it. The things they had experienced were very different from what Tang Yun claimed to have felt.
Whether or not, Tang Yun lost her memory for real, was something Jing Yichen could easily find out from his sources. He just didn’t think it was important enough for him to waste his time on all this now. Nor was it important to find out why did she eventually agree to come back to China or why didn’t she get in touch with Yichen, anytime over the last two years, after she regained her memory.
What was important was that she was still alive.
That was enough.
Shangguan Ning thought that what Tang Yun had gone through was a life changing experience. She couldn’t help feeling sorry for her. “She seems to have had a hard time too. I will try to be nicer to her, henceforth. I won’t call her a random sales person.”
Jing Yichen smiled. “What sales person?”
“She was standing at the reception desk, at the company and told everyone that she was your fiancée. I told her that she looked more like a salesperson.”
“She will never visit the company again, I promise.”
The rumour that Tang Yun was his fiancée, had spread across the company like wildfire. Lu Qing had already reported all of this to him, that day itself. Even Jing Zhongxiu, who had never interfered in his affairs since he took over the company, called him and told him to be careful of the family reputation. He also warned him to never betray Shangguan Ning.
For the first time, Jing Yichen didn’t cut his father off abruptly.Instead, he took the effort to offer his father an explanation.
“Nothing is going on between Tang Yun and me. Shangguan Ning is my wife. She is the one I love. Now and forever. Nothing will change that.”
Yichen had told Lu Qing that if anyone dared to ask him about Yichen and Tang Yun, then he should tell them that Jing Yichen was happily married and there was no question of him having a fiancée.
The following day, there was a furore at the office. The employees couldn’t stop discussing how they were completely unaware of this news. The women staff were particularly miffed. Some were even heartbroken.
Shangguan Ning was forced to take a couple of weeks off, on Jing Yichen’s insistence. He did not want her to exert herself by resuming work immediately.
After two weeks when Shangguan Ning started going to office, she wondered why the morale of the women in the company was so low. She asked Mi Xiaoxiao what the matter was, “What is it going on? Why is everyone so depressed?”
Mi Xiaoxiao looked at her and sighed.
Mi Xiaoxiao patted Shangguan Ning’s shoulders and asked, “Shangguan Ning, you are not… divorced, are you?”
Shangguan Ning was even more confused. “No. Why?”
“Oh, oh that’s good then. Well… please don’t leave your husband. Work on your marriage and live your life well. Our president..our president is already married!”
