The look on her face was dark and emotionless yet filled with anguish.
"We have to go, now." She said in a monotonous tone before leaping off the tree branch and took to her titan raven form.
"What's going on?" he asked again, now more concerned than ever.
Every possibility he could think of ran through his mind as he placed his hand on the bark of the tree. A cold chill ran down his spine as his expression darkened. He allowed Vyrena to pick him up in one talon and Mara in the other.
Without missing a beat, she flew straight back towards the City. As they got nearer, a blaring of horns filled the air. Vyrena's heightened senses had already enabled her to hear it from the Jungle. Sorren's ability to access the Funghi network alerted him of the impending danger that had just arrived.
After the blaring of horns, a musical jingle followed. The same sinister singing voice returned. But the lyrics of the song had changed.
~It is a wonderful night! A wonderful night indeed!~
~It is time for the rabbits to come out and play.~
~It is time for the rabbits to have some fun.~
~Some are tall, some are short. Some are big, some are small.~
~Some climb, walk and crawl. Some fly above in the sky, some burrow down below.~
~In the endless roulette merry go round, everyone is happy, everyone is smiling.~
~It is a wonderful night! A wonderful night indeed!~
~It is time for the rabbits to come out and play.~
~It is time for the rabbits to have some fun.~
~Run little mice, run in your pen. Play with the rabbits, come out to play.~
Vyrena cursed beneath her breath. She knew it was a possibility that it could happen at any time. But she never knew it was going to be so soon.
"We need to find Boss and the rest. Are you able to tap into the Fungi network to pinpoint their location?" Vyrena asked Sorren.
"I can definitely give it a shot," he added.
As night time had begun to set in, visibility on the ground was low. Vyrena was still able to make out her surroundings, with the help of some light sources down below. The darkened sky also served as good cover for her as she flew.
Vyrena landed them safely on the outskirts of the City. Sorren quickly regained his bearings and placed his palms face down on the dirt covered ground. He was able to tap into the Funghi network instantly, but a chill ran down his spine.
His pale expression was seen by Vyrena with the help of the fireball she held in her hand for light.
"Sorren, what's wrong?" she asked out of concern.
He shook his head, trying to concentrate on the task at hand. Parts of the Funghi network were missing. It was not that it had been destroyed, but the funghi in the affected areas were in a state of fear.
The air was clouded with many different scents and smells. She carefully blocked out the scents she did not want and honed in on what she was looking for. Sorren tapped her on the shoulder, he found where they were.
Vyrena trusted him and went with his word. They were a distance away from where they were at present. But in Vyrena's titan wolf form, she could get there in a matter of minutes. They both turned to look at Mara who was still unconscious.
Vy tried to wake her up, by slapping her cheeks but Mara did not stir. Sorren tried violently shaking her, but that did not work either. None of the mushrooms he knew of in the vicinity could help either.
What were they going to do?
"We can bring her with us, I'll just hold onto her while we ride on your back," Sorren suggested as he looked at Mara's sleeping form.
Vy shook her head, "Too risky, especially if I was going at top speed."
She looked all around her, hoping to find somewhere to hide Mara and keep her safe while they went on their search. But no matter how hard she looked, she could not find anything suitable. In the distance, Vyrena could feel a presence approaching them in their direction.
They were running out of time, out of options. In the cover of the nearby forest, Vyrena noticed that there were vines hanging off the trees. She quickly ran up, harvested them and brought it back to Sorren.
"Secure her to my back, while you're at it secure yourself too,"she instructed him.
Sorren did not hesitate, he did as she asked. Time was of the essence if they wanted to survive and they made it just in time.
"Ready?"
"Ready," Sorren quickly replied.
As soon as the word left his mouth, Vyrena was on the move making her way through the night. Sorren directed her as much as he could until she was able to pick up the scent of the survivors. Once she did, she no longer needed his directions.
Sorren balanced himself on Vyrena's back, with holding on to Mara's unconscious body. It was a difficult struggle at first, but they soon got the hang of it. Sorren could feel the pins and needles on his face as the chilly air blew past them.
As the scent grew stronger, Vyrena sped up her movements. Her muscles were burning from the momentum but she did not slow down. She was glad to have not smelled any blood for the moment. But things could change as she closed in on their location.
Vyrena noticed a campfire in the distance, she could almost smell the smoke from the burning wood.
"We are approaching their location," she informed Sorren.
Vyrena heaved a huge sigh of relief when she noticed there were no threats surrounding the campsite. When she was about to reach the clearing, she slowed down her movements. She padded softly and slowly into the clearing while catching her breath.
She was greeted by everyone with their weapons ready and drawn.
"It's just us! We're back!" Sorren quickly called while waving from Vyrena's back.
"Sorren, is that you?" El called out, her weapon still raised.
Vyrena lowered her body to the ground, allowing for Sorren to disembark easily, with Mara in tow. Once they were off her back, she took to her human form immediately. Only then did everyone heave a sigh of relief.
They were welcome back with hugs and multitudes of questions. But Vyrena was still tense. An attack could come at any moment.
