Chapter 57 - My Good Girl

The next day, Wan Yi Jun woke up from his sleep after hearing the continuous ringing noise, 

He somehow shot open his heavy eyelids and reached for his phone out of habit to turn off his alarm.

However, even after continuously pressing on the blank phone screen, the noise didn't go off.

It took a moment for him to realize that it wasn't his alarm but the doorbell.

Is it  Ming Yue? He wondered for a moment while leaving the bed, and somehow, dragged his sleepy body to the front door, 

"Wait a minute,"  He said in his morning hoarse sound and opened the front door with a loud creak sound.

As soon as the door got open and bright yellow light rushed inside, Wan Yi Jun unknowingly covered his eyes,

"Master, are you okay?" Ming Yue's slightly worried voice fell onto his ears as he struggled to 

I was ringing the doorbell for almost an hour,"

"I was fast asleep, Miss Ming." 

"I was about to break some window and break into the house for real."

"You could have given me a call,"

"I did when I left my house, but it was switched off. When I came here, I saw your car and thought you might be inside, so I rang the doorbell."

"I forgot to put it on a charge,"

"Master, don't you have to go to work or are you on leave?"

"No, no, I need to go."

"Are you sure? you look more tired than yesterday,"

"It's nothing. I will go and get ready."

"Yes, master."

It seems like he has been drinking.

Did something happen last night?

"Huh, who are you?"

"WHO ARE YOU?"

"Oh, good morning, miss. We are here for the renovation."

"Oh, you are those workers who left the work in the middle of the construction?"

"No...no... That was another team from our agency."

"I'm sorry, but do you think it is fair to leave the renovation halfway? Do you have any idea how people will live here?"

"Didn't you hear it, miss? It is a haunted house. So many people died here and-"

Oh, my team is here, 

"Chief, why are you coming so late? I came here early and was talking to this girl, 

"Where did she go?"

"Whom are you talking about?"

"There is a girl."

"A girl? There is no one staying here."

"No, but I was talking to a-"

"Oh my God!!!"

"What happened?"

Everyone in the room, including Han Ze Min, was aware that Zhi Lan liked their captain for a long time. They practically spent their university life together, and even after becoming working professionals, they continued to carry on whatever relationship they had all these years.

It was the first time in the eagle team's service history they had a suspect who threw shades at their chief officer's personal lives and created an awkward scene in front of everyone.

Firstly, Cai Hong dragged Han Ze Min's dead girlfriend into their conversation and then blamed Wan Yi Jun as a man who never loved anyone.

However, Cai Hong's scornful words struck them like a bolt of unexpected lightning.

Does this woman even have any common sense? Even if you hate someone to your heart's core, it is not necessary to comment on their personal lives, that too in their workplace.

But more than anything else, they were shocked to hear that Wan Yi Jun never loved anyone.

Does that mean he never reciprocated Zhi Lan's feelings all these years? Not even for once? 

As the realization hit hard in their head, the eagle team members looked sympathetically at Zhi Lan, who sat there with downcast eyes.

It was evident that she was hurt by Wan Yi Jun's words. 

No matter how hard they thought about it, no one could come up with any possible reason for Wan Yi Jun to reject a woman like her.

Anyone who sees them together would easily mistake them as a couple made for each other.

But no one expected such a turn of events.

"You can leave." Wan Yi Jun said after a long silence,

"What?" Everyone stared at the man who sat there without even a  slight change in his proud face. 

In the beginning, they had doubts that Wan Yi Jun refused to be in a relationship with Zhi Lan due to their social status and her father being his superior officer. However, when they heard that their captain Wan who lived like a normal middle classman, actually belonged to a corporate family, there wasn't any place for excuses. As soon as they heard that general Zhi had been rooting for one of his best junior officers for obvious reasons, all of them believed that they would quickly hear a piece of good news.

"You can leave and return with your lawyer."

As soon as Han Ze Min's words heard his cousin's haughty words, he couldn't help but let out a sneer. For a moment, he did doubt Wan Yi Jun had turned soft ever since he joined the police department. But in a glimpse, he realized that no change had happened to the cold and aloof boy he was familiar with.

Even from his childhood, Wan Yi Jun rarely got angry at women, but he had his own ways to get back to them.

Wan Yi Jun repeated and crossed his arms over his chest as if he was no longer interested to carry on the interrogation. 

"Please cooperate with the investigation in the future." He casually said while staring at Cai Hong's panicky face.

"Also, next time, let's meet as a police officer and a suspect, not as childhood friends." He added with a faint smirk that clearly showed his discontent. Though he just stood there unaffected even when Cai Hong blamed his cousin for taking revenge for someone who no longer exists in this world. However, he was just pretending that he didn't care about Cai Hong's words. 

"As Han Ze Min said earlier, we don't have enough evidence to tag you as the perpetrator, but it is enough to get you a place in the suspect list. So talk to your lawyer and take enough precautions to clear your charges. Otherwise, I can't guarantee what happens to your career and your uncle's company."

The instant, Cai Hong noticed the slight change in Wan Yi Jun's voice, she realized he was no different from his cousin, and held the same grudge towards her.

For a mere moment, Cai Hong had a belief that Wan Yi Jun would help her, but in reality, not only did he refuse to help her, but demanded her to forget whatever relationship they had in their childhood.

Just as everyone stared at Wan Yi Jun in disbelief, the man stood up from his seat, urging the others to leave as well.

"Thank you." Zhi Lan said and somehow dragged Cai Hong out of the office, leaving the startled crowd behind,

"Officer Fei and Bing Wen," All of a sudden, Wan Yi Jun gathered everyone's attention as if nothing had happened there,

Yating, send an official 'summoning notice' to miss Cai as soon as possible," He ordered to his second in command, who stood there silent.

Since they got nothing else to say, Zhi Lan nudged her friend to leave the office without wasting any more time.

"Check miss Cai's alibi on new year eve and check all of her phone details for the past two months, including her manager's phone. Don't leave out any details."

He quickly instructed them and dashed inside his cabin, only to walk out in a flash a moment.

"I think I had enough of drama today," Han Ze Min sighed heavily and turned to his team members with a gentle plastering on his face,  "See you tomorrow."

Just as turn around to leave the office, Bing Wen stopped all of a sudden,

"What's it, Xiao Bing?" Han Ze Min asked the

No. Why would I do something reckless and ruin my life? I'm not a fool. And more than anyone else, you two know about my father and brothers. They will literally kill me if I make any trouble." Cai Hong almost swore as she remembered the toxic household she grew up. As a girl born in a highly patriarchal family, her life was nothing better than a slave or even worse. However, instead of growing into an oppressed human being, she has become a rebel and got into as much trouble as she can just to ruin her family's status. Her life only changed when she joined her maternal uncle's entertainment agency and made a career of her own, away from her family.

"Help me? Zhi Lan, you know nothing about him...This man here, this monster, he is the last person in the world who would help me." Cai Hong blathered in a distressed voice as she tried hard to control her boiling anger.

Of course, she knew that Cai Hong was a bully despite her angel-like looks, but she never imagined a back story between her friend and Han Ze Min, that too something related to a dead girl.

"Why would officer Han try to trap you? He is only trying to help?"

"I'm damn sure he is unnecessarily dragging me into this mess because of that girl."

"

"Wan Yi Jun, are you going to stand there and listen to his bullshit? 

As soon as Cai Hong's voice echoed in the room, everyone understood one thing - there is some old rivalry going on between Cai Hong and Han Ze Min, and Wan Yi Jun was someone who is supposed to be the 'mediator'

"Miss Cai, please mind your words," Fei Yan tried to remind the woman who had forgotten that she was sitting in the middle of police officers. It was the first time in his service he met someone who picked up a fight with a police officer.

"I don't care. This man, here, he just trying to avenge-"

Even before Cai Hong could spew some shade over Han Ze Min, he interrupted her with his iconic smile doused with an equal amount of sarcasm and mockery.

Unnecessarily dragging you into this mess? Woah, then what about these videos, miss Cai? Does anyone think that this evidence is fabricated to ruin Miss Cai's career and her uncle's company?" Han Ze Min purposefully asked in a mocking tone, only to annoy Cai Hong more and more.

"Whom are you trying to blackmail, Han Ze Min? Do you think this is enough to ruin everything?" Cai Hong's eyes burned like coal as she spat out those words with utmost hatred, 

"Anyone with a brain could figure out that it is something that normal...something trivial like, calling names and laughing at others mistakes, it's as simple as that."

"As simple as that? Wow?" Han Ze Min almost clapped his hands listening to her claims,  "It seems like  you have no idea what damage your simple "words" left on someone else's life."

"Don't be silly. If I want to avenge whatever you did to my 'dead girlfriend' I would have done it earlier, Cai Hong." Han Ze Min emphasized the word 'dead girlfriend' and looked at the woman with a deadpan expression on his face. Though he appeared cool as an iceberg, only Cai Hong could sense the murderous glint that flashed before her eyes.

No matter how much he tries to convince her, she knows that Han Ze Min still holds an intense grudge against her and definitely show his true colours when he gets the right opportunity.

"Where did you get these dumplings? It's so tasty." 

"Captain Wan brought it from home. Apparently, he got a new cook. It's a shame that we won't be able to eat it regularly."

"Oh, isn't it the same person whom Chief Wu sent for captain's help? Whoa, it seems like their relationship is even thicker than blood."
