It had been hours since Amelia had gone into the surgery. Every minute that went by I felt more scared for my daughter‟s life. Grace had arrived a few minutes ago and I could tell that it was taking its toll. Jett had left an hour ago; I think that he felt out of place.
I had not seen him since he was just a teen; I had been friends with his mother before she died. To my knowledge, he and Amelia had never been friends but had explained to me how he had gotten to my house.
I was worried about Olivia however. Ever since she had seen Jett here she had acted oddly, it had eased up once he left but she still wasn't acting right. I had tried to ask her what was wrong, but she said it was nothing. I didn't believe her at all.
But, my biggest concern right now, apart from Amelia was John. He had turned up two and a half hours after I called him and had only stayed to find out if she was ok or not. Then he just left. I had seen how much the two of them loved each other and I couldn't think of anything that would make him act this way.
"Mrs. Smith" called a voice I looked up to see a doctor in scrubs in front of me. "Yes," I said warily. "We finally finished the surgery on your daughter. You will be pleased that she is in recovery right now" "Oh, thank Lord" I muttered, "What was wrong? Why was she sick?"
"I have to ask you a few questions, is that ok?" he asked quietly and I nodded. "Has your daughter, Amelia, suffered from Confusion or odd headaches?" I thought about it carefully, "she has had a few headaches but nothing too bad that I know off" "How did she cope with them?"
"Um, I think most of the time she would just take a weak painkiller" He looked thoughtful and wrote a few things down on a notebook that had appeared out of nowhere. He looked back up at me, "Has she acted slowly or confused?"
"I don‟t understand," I said, I was beginning to worry a lot now. "I mean, has Amelia been slower thinking than usual? Has it taken longer for things to get through to her?" "I-I don‟t think so" He nodded again and wrote another thing down on the note pad. "Ok, one last question Mrs. Smith. Has her personality changed at all? Has she acted differently; angrier, happier, depressed?"
"No" I stated firmly. "Ok, then that was all I had to ask you. However, I am guessing you have a few questions. What do you want to know?" he asked politely "What‟s wrong with my daughter?"
"Amelia had a seizure. It was very serious. We think that it was caused by a blood clot in her brain. That was the reason for my questions, Confusion, Slow-thinking, Personality changes, Headaches, and seizures are all common symptoms."
sweet mother of Lord, that was a lot worse than I could have imagined. I heard a sharp intake of breath and saw that at some point Olivia and Grace had moved closer to listen. "How did it happen? How do people get these blood clots, How did Amelia?"
"I was reading over Amelia‟s medical file and I am positive that the clot was formed when she hit her head and suffered the amnesia. That is one way a clot can manifest."
"What happened? Is it gone? Is that what the surgery was for?"
"Yes, we carried out an MRI when she was bought in after the seizure had stopped. It showed a blot clot in her brain. The surgery was an attempt to remove it. However, it wasn't very successful"
"What?!" I shrieked, "Why the hell not?"
"The clot was too small for the surgeon to get at without causing permanent brain damage. We have started her on an alternative path. We are now treating her with a Corticosteroid medication. It is usually more successful with smaller, newer clots"
"Will she be ok?" "I believe that if she responds well to the treatment, then yes. She could be home in a matter of weeks." "Thank you," I said sincerely. At least I knew that she was going to be ok.
