Chapter 1 Before the Storm 1

In a kingdom that is neither known for its riches or customs - yes this kingdom is slightly unique than all the others. There is an unspoken rule, not to abuse money, and even those with high 'status' abide by this rule. Perhaps it is because of the present Queens influence, but no riots have broken out despite this unusual rule.

Inside a grand castle in the centre of town, there is a woman busy working away at her kingdoms paperwork... Her features were neither Asian nor English in particular. It was a combination of both. Her long jet black hair and blue eyes, skin as fair as snow which others regard as an unusual combination to her people. At first, there had been opposition for her to get the throne, but after she saved the land and proved herself that changed.

Yes, this is the story of Lyn - and her knights.

.

.

Lyn exhaled deeply. Time for a break, she stood up and left her desk and walked towards the window. She placed her hand on the stained glass window, a frown crossed her features as she overlooked the town. While her kingdom has neither prospered in particular, never has there been a famine. However, 6 months ago, that changed. What was that bright light? What was that voice she heard? Honestly, the memories of that moment were still a blur to her. Back then, she had been amidst a fight. It scattered her knights and yet once the light faded; they were all in the same place.

... She shook her head, even if there is magic involved here. She doubts anyone can be capable of this damage. While she is a highly trained swordswoman, she is also good at magic. It was because of these skills she could save everyone and obtain this position. She cannot let any of them down.

Her thoughts broke off as she heard a knock on the door.

"My Queen."

"Enter."

The doors creaked open and out stepped her advisor. Pupillam Consilliaro. Lyn nodded in acknowledgement as she entered the room.

"What is the report?" she asked.

"Yes, we received word from head knight Arkwright that the kingdom of snow forces are marching on our land as we speak," Pupillam said.

"How long until they arrive?"

"With the head knights efforts, we can push them back for another month.." Pupillam explained.

Lyn tapped the cup in her hands, "A month." she murmured. Neither too short nor too long. Do they have time? Must she wait until 'he' comes back? It felt like his long absence and this incidence is connected somehow.

"Why not just launch a surprise attack from the mountains? They don't know about that place. If you let me go, I won't show them any mercy." Miley giggled.

Lyn wasn't surprised that the girl entered without knocking.

Miley, a highly trained female assassin. At the start, she had her doubts regarding her. Someone had advised her countless times not to trust people from lesser backgrounds. But that did not bother her, what bothered her was the circumstances of their first meeting. When Miley first came here, she was bright and energetic. It was a first for the girl, to be surrounded in luxury.

Even after becoming one of her knights, the girl's attitude remained as carefree as ever. Even after being exposed to war, despite not previously having held a blade before they met...she...

"You'll kill them?"

"It will be done swiftly and silently," Miley said.

Lyn paused, is it wise to send her out? She does not doubt the girl's capability. But they know little on the enemy. Also, "We must get in touch with the Queen of snow."

Even if there's clear evidence of her people marching on her lands, and the head knight being away proved that something was going on. There's no guarantee that this is a sign of war. After all...

"The kingdom of snow, Queen J has contributed to our kingdom and is also a dear friend of mine from the academy."

"Friendship? Are you that naïve my queen?"

Pupillam interjected, "My queen, with all due respect... Miley makes a point. When was the last time you saw the Queen of snow? And since then, have you contacted her?"

"..."

"I'll answer that, for the last three years she has accepted no invitations from us, nor given us a reason. It would be fine if she were busy with her own kingdoms affairs, but there have been reports of neglect and corruption amongst her people." Pupillam trailed off, "The land of snow, no the Queen of snow is changing. Something's changed. My queen, we must act."

Against J. Lyn closed her eyes and the image of her dear friend appeared. Is this war? Is this what she wants? While two kingdoms so close to each other fighting is not unusual. The two, when they first ascended their thrones made a vow.
