“Baby, don’t cry, don’t cry…” After a while, the little one quieted down in Abigail’s arms, but became even more reliant on her, and Kelly looked as if she was about to cry.
Seeing this, Brandon said, “Try to get him to sleep first. I am sorry for the inconvenience, Miss Green.”
As he said this, he unconsciously glanced at the little one balled up. He moved away awkwardly, and without waiting for Abigail to say anything, he turned and left.
Abigail looked curiously at the man’s retreating figure and then bent her head to soothe the baby.
The frightened little one was hard to soothe and became extremely reliant on Abigail. After more than an hour, she finally broke away. The wound that had been torn open during the emergency treatment of a patient earlier that day had already become unbearable. When Abigail left the nursery, her steps were extremely unsteady.
The guests downstairs had already left, and only Brandon and Pullan remained in the living room.
They were waiting for her.
“Pullan, escort Miss Green.” Perhaps it was because it was late at night, Brandon’s voice was tinged with a hint of laziness and hoarseness. Compared to his usual clear and smooth voice, it was less pretentious, mostly deep and alluring, and partly enticing.
When he said “Miss Green,” it felt like Abigail wasn’t a 200-pound fat lady but a slender, noble young lady in the misty rain of the south, easy to fall for.
“Miss Green, please.” A rough male voice abruptly broke the lingering atmosphere.
Abigail bowed to Brandon and left the Piers’ old house in the darkness of the night.
As soon as she left, Brandon lightly sipped the red wine by his side and became somewhat annoyed, “Brandon, do you fucking have a problem?”
Who would have thought that the always elegant and gentle Master Brandon could burst out in such a vulgar way and even curse himself.
…
It was already midnight when Abigail returned to Green’s Mansion. As soon as the lights were on, she saw Rose Taylor and Ruby Green sitting on the sofa.
“Did Master Brandon escort you back?” In the quiet of the night, Ruby’s face twisted in rage as she dropped her pretense.
“Pullan.” Abigail looked at them, the fat face carried a radiant smile, as if she was completely oblivious to the hostility emanating from the two on the couch.
Ruby was infuriated by Abigail’s attitude. She stood up abruptly, “You fat bitch, I see you are sick of living… Ah…”
“If your leg isn’t in good condition, you should rest.” Abigail kindly reminded her.
“Mother, break her legs.” Ruby clasped her left leg. She had already fractured her leg. After removing the plaster cast and fussing over it all day, it had become swollen and painful. The intensity of the pain made her wince, but she didn’t forget to maliciously order Rose to break Abigail’s legs.
Abigail frowned. Even though Green’s Mansion was large, it was certainly not big enough that they wouldn’t hear her screams. But considering how the mother and daughter were blatantly bold, she asked, “What did you do to Lincoln Green?”
Rose hesitated, not expecting Abigail’s reaction to be so swift. She commanded with a gloomy look, “Johnson, break both her legs.”
At this point, a gaunt middle-aged man walked out from behind Abigail. He was the Greens’ gardener, an invisible existence in Abigail’s memory, but she didn’t expect that he was also a puppet of this mother and daughter pair.
Johnson approached with a steel rod. The look in his eyes as he gazed at Abigail was chilling, like a hibernating snake opening its eyes.
Abigail didn’t move. “The Piers invited me to play with young Master tomorrow. Are you sure you want to lay hands on me now?”
“You bitch, dare to mention. You must have done something to that brat!” Ruby didn’t think a child of eight days would remember anything. She was certain Abigail had done some harm to the child.
Yet she was unaware that a baby is more sensitive than any creature.
Stop wasting time on her; do it!” Rose stood up and commanded. Recalling how Abigail had upstaged her daughter today, she thought that if Abigail continued to frequent the Piers’, who knows if Brandon would discover something. She decided to break Abigail’s spirit first and then slowly torture her.
Just because she didn’t die at the hospital, doesn’t mean accidents can’t happen.
