"Leave." Tara's smile was uglier than her frown. They were used to a woman who was calm and gentle at most times. Now, her intense and hostile response made them uncomfortable. The ladies left the hospital.
Tara's face changed in a few seconds when she saw Ira. She painted a polite smile, "Sorry you had to hear that." Her voice was tinged with remorse, after all, they were her friends and relatives.
"No, it's fine... Instead, thank you." The cowering Ira found strength with her words.
Upon reaching the corridor Ira heard those ladies ridiculing her. She didn't take a step towards them as she had no face to see them. The claims they made were all true. Since they gossiped the facts which were true how could she even refute their words?
Once, Vivan, Tara or even her own reputation didn't matter to her. She didn't care if the entire world went to hell.Little did he care about the opinions they had for her.
However, now when she stood in the society, with her kids going to enter the same world she disdained, the people's acceptability and her standing somehow mattered. Ira was shrinking in a corner hesitant to confront them. After toughening her heart she took a step. She refrained herself from getting involved in these petty useless fights.
When she saw Tara coming out to hear everything, her heart came to her mouth. It scared Ira that her mother-in-law had to hear all this reproach because of her. Ira wished to dig a hole and bury herself.
Even though Tara was a good person, how can an elder especially a mother-in-law tolerate a disrespectful daughter-in-law like me? Ira shook her head in remorse but Tara's sudden angry response surprised her.
Yes! That woman was her mom!
One had to admit that Tara had a tougher side. The cold dominating one just like Ira. Vivan words about Ira being like his mom were true. The quiet woman turned intimidating in a flip.
Tara's anger tickled her heart like nothing else. Those present at the scene were Tara's friends and relatives. This incident could arouse negative feelings between them. The outcome cannot be constrained yet Tara took the risk.
A different kind of warmth seeped her senses. The warmth of a family!
The reason Vivan was so good to her had to do a lot with the woman who raised him.
