Chapter 227: Wight Levelling

227 – Wight Levelling

Watching the remains of the little treant crumble away out of the corner of my eye, I check the wight’s status.

Huh, its level didn’t increase as much as I expected. The ball rabbit’s level increased fast because I was power levelling it, and in my own case I had an experience doubling skill. Well, it is what it is. Sorry, little treant, it looks like we won’t be able to make good use of your sacrifice.

It might be better to power level the wight too… But it doesn’t look like there are any monsters that are weak enough around here. For now I’ll get my partner to restore its body with [Soul AppendmentFake Life]. I wonder if that’ll be enough to regain its HP. Restoration magic wouldn’t damage it, right?

After my partner uses [Soul AppendmentFake Life], I check the wight’s status and see that its HP was restored safely. Relieved, I release the breath I’ve been holding. It might be best to avoid using recovery magic on it. I have no idea how it affects undead, after all.

But how should we go about levelling it up? While I’m fretting over the issue, the wight starts poking my front leg, pointing at another small tree.

N-no, that would be a bit… How to put this, I’ve got some hang-ups about continuing. The wight hangs its head forlornly. This child really does want to raise its level. As it is now, it’ll fall apart again soon, and as soon as I take my eyes off it, it might get eaten by an abyss… Um…

“Gaah, gaah”

Hmm? What’s up, partner?

Suddenly, I feel a voice in my head calling out “water, want to drink”. Just now, that was…

【Characteristic skill [Mutual Understanding] has risen from level 1 to 2. 】

Ah, as I thought it was my partner. At this rate, my partner might be able to continuously talk inside my head soon. That could be a little unpleasant.

My partner sticks out her tongue and starts panting forcibly, repeatedly glancing at me. You don’t have to appeal that much; I know what you’re trying to say…

I release a cry and start walking, the wight following me.

When we arrive at the river, my partner sticks her head into the water and splashes around while drinking. I’m also feeling a bit thirsty, so I thrust my head underwater and drink as well.

Having drunk plenty of water, I raise my head. Despite the drips of water falling from my mane, I can see my reflection in the water’s surface. I open my mouth slightly, checking my wicked-looking teeth.

I’ve completely gotten used to being a dragon. But then it’s not like my appearance was this ferocious from the start. While thinking such things, I glance to my side to see the wight crouching by the river bank, peering at the water’s surface.

It’s not like it’s panicking over its appearance or anything, but I think it looks a little sad. When it is frightened, it trembles, and when it wants my attention, it pokes me. I am sure it doesn’t have memories from its past life, but its mannerisms are unmistakably that of a human child. There’s no way I can think of it as being nothing more than a monster produced by [Soul AppendmentFake Life].

“Guuo…”

As I call out, the wight looks back at me and stands up.

Perhaps it might instinctively understand that levelling up might allow it to regain its flesh. If so, that would explain why it wants to level up so badly.

Perhaps it’s holding onto a faint hope that, after eating a lot of human flesh, a zombie can regain its humanity. Because I experienced such hardships chasing after the [Humanization Technique], I understand its feeling well. I’ve had it better as a dragon, but as a wight it’s just bone. Just a skeleton.

Having made my resolution, I indicate a nearby tree with my head.

Partner, please use [Soul AppendmentFake Life] on that. I’d like to allow the wight evolve by the end of today.

“Gaa?”

“Sure?”, she asks. Yes, of course.

As she uses [Soul AppendmentFake Life], just like before, the its bark changes and a face appears. It’s transformed into a little treant.

“Higii!”

The little treant uproots itself and starts moving.

The wight looks up at me happily.

“Gaah”

With my cry, it circles behind the little treant and grapples it. The little treant struggles, snapping some of the wight’s bones. The wight catches a fractured bone before it hits the ground, using it to stab into the little treant’s back.

“Higi, higii!”

It bit, squeezed, and stabbed with its broken bones. It’s a much messier fight than last time. It’s low on MP, so it might not be able to use its skill.

But the wight is winning regardless. It’s got one level on the little treant. Simply comparing their stats, the wight’s are higher on average.

Covered in gashes, the little treant collapses, the wight falling to the ground with it.

Dragging its chipped and broken body, the wight crawls towards me. I gently pat its head with my foreleg. Then, to the wound-covered little treant, I close my eyes and bow my head a little.

It’s still not enough. For the wight to evolve, around five more little treants will be needed.
