[Yang Menghuo POV]
"Yes, it's about my son, Yang Menghuo. I want to have a little talk with you."
Yang Menghuo held his breath as he continued listening to what his mother was about to say to Ying Jie. It was too late to stop them from talking to each other, so all he could do right now was to wait and listen.
Shi Ying got nervous all of a sudden. For some reason, she also realized the seriousness of this talk. She knew it wouldn't be good since she was talking to Madam Evelynn Yang right now, the lady with a vicious mouth from the entertainment industry.
"T—Then, what is it about, Ma'am? Have you decided upon something?" Shi Ying asked, half expectant, half scared.
There was a long pause on Madam Yang's side. She sighed deeply, "I don't know how to start this.. But congratulations, Shi Ying, you've successfully bewitched my only son. He doesn't even want to listen to me at this point."
"I wonder if you're doing something that makes him so crazy in love with you, I've never seen him with so much determination in his heart," Madam Yang said. "And I hate you for that."
Shi Ying gulped. Madam Yang could throw something so heavy like 'hate' so easily, proving that she still didn't see Shi Ying as equal as her.
But then again, what did she expect from Madam Yang anyway? She was the 'high above all' type of woman who could afford to look down on people.
As someone who worked with her husband for seven years, Shi Ying had to admit that most of her memory with Madam Yang was just bad or plain humiliating.
Shi Ying usually ignored her because she knew that was just how Madam Yang talked and looked at people, but when you were in this position right now, as her potential daughter-in-law, things became ten times scarier than they should be.
Yang Menghuo felt that it was unnecessary to talk with her, he tried to snatch the phone from Shi Ying, but Shi Ying immediately dodged and moved her lips to say the word 'NO' in silence.
Meng Bao didn't want his Ying Jie to get hurt by his mom's ruthless words. But whenever he tried to snatch the phone, Ying Jie would dodge and refused to hang up the call.
Shi Ying took a deep breath to calm herself down, "Ah, I see, Ma'am. I'm sorry that you have to spare your hatred on me. But you should've realized that stubborn character in Yang Menghuo…."
"I do realize it. I just didn't expect it will be that strong. He would usually yield to me and obeyed what I want for him. Because naturally, I want to best for him, my child," Madam Yang replied. "And I naturally believe that you're not the most fitting for him, Shi Ying."
"Don't you see how overqualified he is for you? I don't even need to explain it. Everything is so obvious right in front of your eyes," Madam Evelynn Yang scoffed. "It's a miracle that he would bat an eye on you. He is just too much for someone so humble."
Yang Menghuo was the first one to get angry at his mother's remark. He already told his mother to stay away from his problem, especially about Ying Jie. He wouldn't tolerate any of the bullshit she spoke about not having the woman at the same level as him and whatsoever.
He believed that Ying Jie was far above him. He was the kindest, the most beautiful, and the most generous a woman could be! He was the one who should be happy that Ying Jie wanted to love him!
Because apparently, based on appearance only, Ying Jie didn't fit the whole world's aesthetic.
Well, fuck that, he would use his money to shut them all up and prove that Ying Jie is the most beautiful woman on earth!
Meng Bao had something in his mind while he kept staring at Ying Jie, feeling that his mother was so blind to say that Ying Jie was ugly.
"I see, Ma'am, I don't think Yang Menghuo picked me based on my appearance only, and I don't think it's the only thing that matters," Shi Ying replied.
"Hah, that's what you said. Do you know that he will suffer, knowing he will wake up every single day, staring at you at his side of the bed? He will have a lifetime disappointment!"
Yang Menghuo was about to yell at his mother, but Shi Ying was quick enough to cover Meng Bao's mouth, stopping him from saying unnecessary stuff. Because this would turn into World War III if she allowed Meng Bao to speak ill against his mother like before.
"Ma'am, you might be his mother, but that doesn't mean you know everything about him. Besides, he is twenty-five already and has been monetarily independent for years," Shi Ying tried to reason against this overbearing mother of his future husband.
"What about you? Do you know anything about him? I am his mother. Of course, I know what he likes and dislikes. He is just enamored by you for an unknown reason. Maybe you're doing your village witchcraft thing. I heard village folks like playing with sacred stuff to influence rich people to marry them, how vile," Madam Yang accused.
Shi Ying took another deep breath, her patience started wearing thin, but he couldn't lose control because this might be the only time for her to convince Madam Yang that she was the right one for Meng Bao.
Besides, who would Meng Bao marry if it wasn't her anyway? He was so ruthless against anyone around him, both men and women. His ruthlessness is unisex.
"Ma'am, in case you still didn't know, or Yang Menghuo hadn't told you yet. But I've accompanied him for two years of his life in the village. It might be a short time for you, but you should ask him how important those two years in his life are.'
"Do you know that he hates sour food and loves eating anything sweet? Do you know that he likes the color black and red and hates the color purple because it reminds him of his neglectful parents? Because apparently, you often wear purple when visiting him in the village before…."
"Do you know he has low empathy for his surrounding, so I have to teach him to be more compassionate and responsible? Do you know that he often acts in a certain way so he can get attention?"
"That's—" Madam
"Ma'am, you're his mother, and you have the right as a mother. But you should also realize that Yang Menghuo has his own life. It might be too much coming from a person like me, but you're an overbearing, controlling mother who is unfit to raise a child, let alone raising someone like Meng Bao."
"And now that he is older, you want him to follow everything that you want him to do? Ma'am, I see that you don't have any conscience," Shi Ying said, still with a very polite voice but very strong jabs.
Shi Ying wanted Madam Yang to know that she knew nothing about Meng Bao.
She knew the chance of her getting the blessing from Madam Yang is close to zero, and by saying this, it would only lower her chance.
Wait, maybe it was zero already, so it didn't matter anyway. Zero times anything would still result in zero.
…
Again, the silence permeated in the air. Both Meng Bao and Shi Ying stared at each other. Meng Bao was ready to yell back at his mother for insulting his beloved Jie, but Ying Jie kept on stopping him from doing anything stupid.
"You have a lot of guts talking to your mother-in-law like that, huh, Shi Ying?" Madam Yang suddenly said.
Shi Ying and Yang Menghuo were startled by what they just heard. They didn't expect Madam Yang to say something like 'mother-in-law.'
"P—Pardon?" Shi Ying thought she misheard it.
"I said, you have a lot of guts talking to your mother-in-law like that. I kind of get what my son sees in you," Madam Yang stated. "I've been thinking about this, but I'm still not sure whether I should give up and give you two my blessing or not. That's why I called you."
"I want to see what you have for my son."
"I still don't understand you, but since my son has been holding back this whole time even after I insulted you over and over. You must've held him not to yell back at me, right? The fact that he obeys you, he must've been so head over heels for you…."
"So there is no use of me trying to hold you two back…." Madam Evelynn Yang sighed. "We will have more talk later, but for now, go and prepare for your wedding. I give you two my blessing."
…
…
It took a while for Shi Ying and Yang Menghuo to register what Madam Yang just said.
"P—Pardon, Ma'am, I might've misheard—"
"You didn't, I said, I give you two my blessing."
