Chapter 156 - 156. I Want To Divorce You

"Was the mistress at that time crossing the road or standing on the side of the road?" David asked investigating. He continued to write down important points based on Elise's answers and statements.

"At that time I was standing on the side of the road."

"How is the car going? Are there any signs the driver was drunk causing the car to roll, or something like losing control of the brakes?"

Elise fell silent. She recalled the incident. This time she tried to remember the car.

"As I recall, the car was under control. There was no sign of a drunk driver. The car was going very fast. After hitting Mommy, the car stopped for a few seconds before going very fast to escape from the scene."

Elise's answer suddenly made David and Erick look at each other. They both seemed to have the same thought. And it was as if to say from their eyes that they both suspected that this was not an ordinary hit-and-run accident.

Seeing the signs of the two policemen, made Brian curious and asked, "what's wrong?"

"According to Mrs. Fernandez's explanation, this case is not an ordinary hit-and-run case." Erick replied to Brian.

"You mean?"

"It is possible that this was attempted murder." Said David.

Brian and Elise's eyes were both big. They both couldn't believe it. Attempted murder? It was unexpected and terrifying.

"Attempted murder?" asked Brian to confirm the police explanation.

"Yes. From the explanation of Mrs. Fernandez, she was standing on the side of the road. It is very unlikely that there will be an accident when she was standing there, it is different if she was crossing. Then, the driver's condition was conscious and even the car could brake, it confirmed the alleged attempted murder ."

Elise and Brian who heard David's explanation fell silent and thought about it. In their hearts they agreed with the police's diagnosis.

"If this is indeed a case of attempted murder, then Mrs. Fernandez you are in danger."

Elise was surprised to hear Erick's words.

"Elise is in danger, because she was the real target in the hit and run incident." Brian's smart brain can conclude that. And the two policemen nodded.

"We will investigate this case carefully. And will provide information to you, if we find evidence or the whereabouts of the perpetrator."

Brian nodded in agreement. Because he is also very curious about the identity of the perpetrator who hit his mother to death.

"For your safety, it is better to stay at home and stay away for a while. Until we have conclusive evidence whether this is really a case of attempted murder or just a simple hit and run case." David say to Elise.

"Yes, I will employ bodyguards to protect her." Brian replied. Elise, who thought of a murderer aiming for her life, she certainly would never come out of the mansion again.

"Then, Thank you for cooperation." Said Erick. After that the two policemen took their leave. They will investigate the hit-and-run Rena more thoroughly. They will check the CCTV around the scene.

After the departure of the two policemen. Silence enveloped the living room where Elise and Brian were still sitting there.

Elise fell silent. She was still thinking about what the police said that she was in danger. However, now there is something even more important. She had to talk to Brian about their current divorce. If not at this time, Elise was afraid that she would not have enough courage or even change her mind. This will make it difficult for Elise to fulfill her promise to the deceased.

"Brian, I want to talk to you." Said Elise, who looked straight ahead, not wanting to turn to Brian who was sitting beside her.

"What is wrong?" Asked Brian, who was now turning to face Elise. Brian looked at Elise's face.

"I want to divorce you." Elise's words really took Brian by surprise.

The man never thought Elise would ask for a divorce with him. He did hear Elise agree to Rena's last request, but he thought it was just Elise's momentary decision to please Rena who was in the last seconds of her life. Remembering how Elise depended on and never wanted to let him go, making it hard for Brian to believe the word divorce came out of Elise's mouth.

"I've thought about it. Our marriage is untenable. Your heart is already filled with other women and Dean needs his biological mother's love more than I do." Elise continued.

"Elise." called Brian with various feelings in the look in his eyes when he saw Elise's side face. Brian felt guilty and didn't know what to say to get rid of the sad look on Elise's face.

Even the woman didn't want to look at Brian, which made the man feel even more guilty.

"Elise, I'm sorry." With a look of regret Brian touched Elise's shoulder.

"No, all of this is the result of my own actions. I pushed you to have a relationship with Elena. It's all my own fault if you end up falling in love with her." Elise turned and looked at Brian's face. Seeing Brian's guilty face, Elise knew that he really didn't love her anymore. Or maybe there was no love since the beginning of their marriage.

"No, I was in the wrong for not being able to keep my promise to you to always love you." Brian protests.

Brian's words made Elise recall Rena's words that Brian's feelings for her were not love, but responsibility and pity.

"Brian, tell me honestly. Why would you marry me? Is it because of love or is it just your guilt and responsibility for that terrible incident?"

Brian never expected Elise's question. Rena also once questioned this and stated that Brian's feelings for Elise were not love but guilt and responsibility.

Brian fell silent. He searched himself for answers to Elise's question. And one conclusion he got.

"Either love or guilt, but one thing is for sure, you are the first woman who made me want to marry you. That wish I had long before the incident happened."
