Chapter 26 The King's Opus

"Medium of magic?" Faustina asks as she reads the books that are laid in front of her. In her side was Folkmanor's 4th Lesson of Pronunciation of Verses, and in her hand was a lesson concerning the need of a "medium" in order to perform any spell. Faustina tilted her head and then faked a cough.

"Orwell?"

"Yeeessss?" Orwell asked lazily, drinking tea as he checks Faustina's homework from yesterday.

"What's a medium of magic? I think we skipped that part."

"Oh! Oh yes! I can't believe I forgot about that one." Orwell exclaims, his eyes widening in surprise. Standing up he went to Faustina's side and sat closely, as he stared at the book. Faustina tilted her head as Orwell adjusted his glasses as if to recall few things.

"The medium of magic is an object that stores and embodies a mage's prowess. These are staves, wands and scepters."

"Oh."

"Yes, yes. Oh! And do you know, m'lady that the royal families usually summon scepters because their line has a higher concentration of Elf blood, plus it is said that they are the "real bearers" of the soul of the elves, disregarding the theory?"

"What do you mean?"

"What I'm saying is… the scriptures are wrong."

Faustina's eyes widened. "That's… blasphemous?"

"Exactly. That is why Goldenfag was less favored than Folkmanor. They said he wasn't thinking straight. He said everyone can be a mage."

"Huh? Everyone? How?"

"I don't know, his blasphemous theory led to his books be burnt… except with some we are studying today, of course; anyways, I believe anyone can be a mage. I agree with Goldenfag. Although maybe the mana of commoners is considered little or rather, lacking…. compared to nobles, I believe that there is something… something that maybe fills that gap—I don't know; all of it was gone, all his theories and afterthoughts. It really pisses me off." Orwell says, and then he blinked. "Oh I'm sorry for that. Where were we? Ah! The medium of magic, right..."

Faustina nodded.

"The ones with the utmost potential possess no medium."

"What do you mean?" Faustina asks in confusion, tilting her head. "Then how can they use their magic?"

"Through chanting ancient verses. It is done by the memorization of The King's Opus, which is written in Antiquorum alone, and cannot be translated to Mystisch given the fact that there are no words that can convert the Elven tongue to Mundane language."

"Then how many people can use The King's Opus?"

"As of now… four." Orwell says, showing his fingers counted into four. "The king of Feuersturm Empire, the queen of Eissturm Empire, the prince of Gronland Kingdom, and Verteidigerin's youngest princess. The four countries of Zuerst. The other three, unfortunately…"

"Wow… you know this much, Orwell." Faustina says, amazed.

"Well my knowledge is only limited to Zuerst. I know little… no… I know nothing of Zweite, the second continent."

"That's still amazing… then did every king of Feuersturm had the potential to use The King's Opus?"

"No. Unfortunately not." Orwell says, and then he snapped his fingers and in a span of a second, a book opened in front of Faustina.

"There were only eight kings in the history of Feuersturm that are able to use that book. Eight kings and our king as of today. Alexander Octavius Ein Feuerkrieger IX. Did you know that the Alexander Octavius name was bestowed only upon children that can use the Opus? When they see the potential in the child, they'll rename regardless of the age, I hear."

Faustina stared at the book laid in front of her. It was an illustration of nine kings.

"Th-they all look identical to His Majesty…" Faustina says as she stares at the other eight—the ninth king being Noah.

"I know. It's a thick blood they have there. Faustina—these are the kings that are born with magic: THE NINE KINGS OF FEUERSTURM."

Orwell told her a history about how generations of kings of Feuersturm overlapped and how the majority was not blessed with the 'talent.' He told her how the nine kings (including Noah) were all inflicted with Nightmare, but they possessed a powerful magic that made them be able to preserve their body.

Though Orwell did not actually know what that 'Nightmare disease' actually is, despite of him mentioning the disease over and over again, he knew it was something that was done to the first king of Feuersturm, to the first kings of every nation. And he knew it possessed the nine kings that are able to use the Opus.
