Everything Nancy said was going in Charles' one ear and coming out the other. From where did she gather such a pile of gibberish?
He cleared his throat and tried to explain. His voice was cool. "Nancy, Lilian is too young. Don't you understand what I'm saying? I was drunk last night. Jay was worried about my safety. He asked Lilian to come with me but I couldn't let her return again by that time. It was quite late, and there were no taxis. That's why I told her to stay for the night. That's all, I swear!"
Charles's explanation was detailed, but Nancy thought he was holding something back.
She seemed amused. "Really? That's all? So, you went out angrily yesterday only to get a drink? You mean she wasn't drinking with you? I don't even care what happened between both of you. You can relax and keep your explanation to yourself."
"That's so absurd." Charles pounded a fist on the table. "Nancy, you're imagining things. You're paranoid!"
"Oh, am I? But I was just telling the truth. Do you deny what you know is true?" Nancy asked with a mocking smile.
Charles
e. She could have died!" the doctor on duty explained amidst sighs.
Although, Nancy was quiet, her hatred for Charles grew.
He never told her anything. He just did things without asking her.
Did he ever think about what the consequences of his actions would be?
Now that it had come to this, shouldn't he be made to take responsibility?
Her phone's vibration cut her thoughts short.
Nancy took an uninterested glance at the phone and ignored it.
But Charles was not backing down. He sent her another text that read, "Honey, you need to hear me out. This is a big misunderstanding. We've been together for so long and we can't let this come between us. The kids are noticing. When I dropped them off at school today, they asked me, 'Is Mommy alright? Why hasn't she smiled for the past two days?' It was heartbreaking to hear that from the children. You don't want them to be sad, do you?"
The children were Nancy's Achilles Heel. She cared about them to a fault, and Charles knew it!
With a sniff, Nancy turned around and walked out of Jessie's ward with Erin.
