Nancy didn't want to hurt Edward, whether he did it intentionally or not.
"Well, Nancy, you know that I believe you. But the problem is grandpa doesn't trust you anymore. I'm sorry. You know, my mother..." Thinking about his mother upset Charles.

Jay answered, "You don't even remember Nancy?"
Doris rolled her eyes. The truth was she had no idea what he meant.
If he and Nancy were playing tricks on her behind her back, that would be terrible!
Embarrassed, Doris smiled awkwardly. "Of course I remember her."
"Then why don't you tell me about your friendship with Nancy?" Jay was almost certain that Doris didn't remember even Nancy. Otherwise, she wouldn't have acted so cautious and alienated.
"Of course we are good friends. Why bother asking?" Doris said confidently.
Good friends, huh? That sounded superficial.
