Yun Muxi and Duanmu Gongyu moved on their way again with their entourage. Their carriage ran on the road.

Yun Muxi sat in the carriage with a calm expression as if nothing had happened.

However, Duanmu Gongyu could not pretend as her. He looked overjoyed as he spoke. “Were you trying to help me and defend me just now? You even admitted that you were my wife.”

Duanmu Gongyu smiled from ear to ear. He had never felt as happy as at the moment.

Yun Muxi replied indifferently, “Yes, but it was mainly because I hated to see her arrogant looks and I wanted to get back at her since she humiliated me. I just incidentally helped you because you are my friend.”

Though Yun Muxi denied it, Duanmu Gongyu did not believe her words. “Is that so?” he asked.

Yun Muxi answered, “Y-E-S!”

Duanmu Gongyu knew well that the fact was not as she said and she just did not want to admit it. Despite knowing this, he could not do anything about it. He did not know how to continue the topic, so, he just stared at Yun Muxi in silence.

Yun Muxi was afraid of being seen through under Duanmu Gongyu’s gaze. She pretended to be calm and turned to read a book; however, she did not take in any word she had read.

When she found that she did not hate to be close to Duanmu Gongyu, she realized she had a feeling for him. She tried hard to suppress the feeling and avoid any close relationship with him because she could not accept him for the time being.

However, that day, when she saw that Gongsun Weiwei coveted Duanmu Gongyu, she hated her out of her instinct and wanted to frustrate her.

Duanmu Gongyu was right that she did not do that because Gongsun Weiwei humiliated her but because she hated her coveting Duanmu Gongyu.

Yun Muxi knew what was in her mind but she could not tell Duanmu Gongyu about it. Facing an uncertain future, she did not dare to give him any hope. If someday, she had a bright future and decided to develop a relationship, she would take Duanmu Gongyu into consideration first.

Knowing little about what Yun Muxi was thinking, Duanmu Gongyu felt helpless for he did not know how to let Yun Muxi open up to him and let him in.

There was dead silence in the carriage. Yun Muxi read a book as Duanmu Gongyu watched her.

As if they had sensed the weird atmosphere in the carriage, Hei Ye and Lan Yun drove the carriage quietly.

They did not take a break until the sunset. Because of the competition between Yun Muxi and Gongsun Weiwei, they were delayed for half of a day and was still riding on a wild path. The place was so desolate that they seemed to have to camp there.

All of a sudden, a sharp arrow appeared in the air and flew toward the carriage. Absent-minded, people were caught unguarded. The arrow shot into the wall of the carriage through the window frames. Facing unexpected danger, Duanmu Gongyu stepped forward to protect Yun Muxi instinctively and thus dodged the arrow coincidentally.

Duanmu Gongyu pulled the arrow out of the wall and his phoenix eyes narrowed. He looked both solemn and fierce, gazing at the arrow with deep eyes. The body of the arrow shone brightly while the head glowed with a faint green light.

Duanmu Gongyu’s heart sank. The arrow was not an ordinary one but one with a strong poison. Judging from the direction the arrow flew from, the arrow was likely aimed at him. If he had not moved to protect Yun Muxi and thus dodged the arrow, he would have been killed now.

Hei Ye stopped the carriage at once and stretched his head into the carriage before saying in an undertone, “Your Highness.” After that, he waited for his order.

Duanmu Gongyu explained in brief words. “It was aimed at me. The arrow has been coated with poison. They wanted me to die. Yet, I don’t know who was behind this, but I guess… it might be him…”

Duanmu Gongyu’s words were meaningful. With a tacit understanding between them, Hei Ye got the clue as soon as he heard Duanmu Gongyu’s words.

Duanmu Gongyu paused for a moment before continuing on, “Let’s wait and see what will happen and stay wary. They have alarmed me, and if they want to kill me, they have to take action before our reinforcements arrive. I guess they will wait for their chance to attack until tonight, so, we have to find a safe foothold as soon as possible but not in the wild. If they come at us in numbers, it will be hard for us to defend. We should find a populated place to spend our night so that the enemies will not attack us openly.”

Duanmu Gongyu analyzed calmly. He then turned to look at Yun Muxi and said in a tone of guilt, “Sorry, I put you in danger with me, but don’t worry, I’ll try my best to protect you.”

He rubbed Yun Muxi’s head pityingly. Yun Muxi smiled casually and replied, “It’s ok. Since I’m in the current situation, there is nothing more to be afraid.”
