Lily the assistant had a confident smile on her face. “I believe you know what I mean. Just do what you’re supposed to, or else…” She did not finish her sentence.
Maisy’s face turned pale as she knew what Lily was warning her about. The assistant was telling her to back away from Jay. Yet, the moment she signed the agreement, she was tied to the man by an invisible bond until she give birth to a son for him.
Lily left right after that, leaving Maisy remained sitting still on the couch.
After a while, Maisy finally regained her wits and checked the time, only to find out that it was about time for her to visit her grandfather at the hospital.
After calming herself down, she changed into clean clothes before heading to the hospital.
On her way there, she had a dejected expression on her face the whole time. It wasn’t until she learned that her grandfather had finally regained his consciousness that a smile finally appeared on her face.
“Grandpa!” Maisy exclaimed as she ran to her grandfather’s side.
Her grandfather smiled as well when he saw his granddaughter. Despite having a wrinkled face, his smile was as bright as the sun.
“Oh! Maisy! Come! Let me have a good look at you.”
Maisy’s grandfather held her hands. She could feel the wrinkles on his skin and the coarse calluses on his palm.
The young lady knew that the calluses developed on her grandfather’s palm because he had been working hard to raise her. That was why she had vowed to work hard so that he could live comfortably for the remaining of his life.
Maisy lowered her head and pulled her grandfather’s hand to her cheek.
“Grandpa, it’s been so long since I last talked to you.” Maisy smiled.
She could act like a kid as much as she wanted in front of her grandfather. In his eyes, she would always be a kid that would never grow up.
“Look at you.” Maisy’s grandfather laughed. “You’re already 20 years old, and you’re still so clingy.”
Maisy laughed, but she would not let her grandfather’s hand go. She held his hand to her soft cheek.
Yet, she didn’t notice that her grandfather’s expression had changed.
“Maisy, tell me, where did you get the money for my surgery?” her grandfather asked.
He had noticed that not only his surgery was paid for, but he was also living in an expensive hospital ward. The ward even consisted of a living that had a TV and other living appliances. It felt more like he was living in a five-star hotel than a hospital.
Maisy froze as she had never thought of an excuse as to where the money came from.
She got up and got anxious when met with her grandfather’s serious gaze.
“Maisy, please tell me the truth. I’m the one who brought you up, and I know you are an honest child,” her grandfather urged.
Maisy clenched her fist so hard that she almost dug her fingernails into her palm.
“Grandpa, don’t worry. A kind person paid for everything.” Maisy forced a smile so that her grandfather wouldn’t have to worry about her.
The old man smiled as well, believing what she had said.
“Then, you better thank that person, okay? I know how expensive my medical bill is.”
Maisy nodded. Her grandfather was right. She had to thank Jay, and the only thing that the man wanted was a son. She told herself that she had to work harder to repay the kindness he had shown to her and her grandfather.
“I will.” Maisy obediently nodded.
She spent the rest of the afternoon at the hospital, but her mind was somewhere else thinking of the events that had happened up until that moment.
What Lily had said to her was right. The only thing that Jay needed from her was a son. He had no feelings for her, and she shouldn’t expect anything more from him other than those stated in the contract.
All Maisy could do at that moment was do her best to get pregnant and give birth to a son so that she could leave Jay once and for all.
As the sun started to set, Maisy unwillingly parted with her grandfather.
She walked out of the hospital and looked at the red sky. She told herself that she should work harder to get pregnant with Jay’s baby..
