Devin looked around the house and made himself comfortable. ''Did you hear what I said?''
''Yes.''
''Then why aren't you talking?''
Walter was taken back by the sudden request from Devin. For a second, he thought Devin has appeared in front of his house by mistake. He is a doctor, not a detective. It's not his occupation to investigate. ''Are you sure the question meant to me?'' He was rather cynical to see Devin's positive expression. ''But why me? You can ask the hospital head. Didn't you already find the person?''
''He is not the one. I don't trust the hospital anymore. I can only rely on you at present,'' Replied Devin. At last, influential businessmen like Carlos Elison was also manipulated by Enger. If he tries to investigate Carlos, Enger will find out. He has to carry this play in secret. What sort of identity does Enger possess that their search for Enger didnot even reach the tip of the iceberg?
Walter didnot understand what Devin meant by 'I can only trust you' ''I don't think I can do that. I am not working in the hospital anymore. Besides, I am not a detective.''
''But I am sure it's not a big deal to you.'' He added with determination.
Is he thick-skinned, or has he been the same since the beginning, and it's surfacing now? Walter internally thought to himself.
''I don't want the hospital head or the dean to get involved in this investigation,'' Devin said. ''Make sure the person directly contacts me when you find out.'' He made a big mistake involving them in the matter previously, and he doesn't want to make the same mistake again,
''I haven't yet agreed to this..''
''Apart from this.'' Devin changed the course of the topic. ''I have something else to talk about with you.''
''What is it now?'' A sigh escaped from Walter's lips. He wondered who is the owner of this house now.
''Can one forget memories of only one person or a thing?'' He hesitantly questioned. The thought itself makes no sense to him, but here he is, suffering from a rare disease.
''Why do you want to know about that?'' Walter asked, his eyes bulged.
''I am just curious,'' Replied Devin. ''I know this sounds strange to you, but I want to know what's the science behind it. Now, will you answer my question?''
''It's a little complicated.'' Taking a deep breath, Walter began. ''If the brain's higher functions are used, memories can be interrupted and blocked. Too much obstruction will weaken the neural connection in brains and hit particular memories. With this, the memories can shut down as soon as you start to remember.'' He continued ''But it's only in theories. We were not able to implement this on anyone. For years, we doctors have been researching, but we hadn't had a breakthrough yet.''
Not a breakthrough yet? So, she is the first one to do it. The theory is put into practice, and I am a successful lab rat? Devin wondered in disbelief. That blondie operated on me, tortured me, and put me in that prison for a year until I completely forgot my memories? How did I fall into her trap in the first place? He doesn't have any recollection of going to Russia and coming back home as well.
''What happens if someone has vivid memories but doesn't want to recollect them?'' He raised another question. The panic attacks are slowly taking a toll on his health, and he is worried it would turn out to be a hazard in the future.
''Is that someone you?'' Walter asked. The way Devin is sounding, he can sense he is talking about himself.
''No.'' Replied Devin.
''Then why are you bothered? '' Conceding Devin's silence, he can understand he is trying to hide something. ''Bring the patient. Unless I examine, I cannot make assumptions.''
''I will try.'' Before Devin got up to leave, Walter hesitantly asked. ''H_ow is Leena?'' It's been a long since he has seen Leena. Although he knows she doesn't have any feelings for him, first love is hard to forget.
''Not so well. Does that bother you? Get yourself a girlfriend.'' Throwing an atomic glare at Walter, Devin stormed out. Enger, Ethan, and now him. How many flies is she going to attract?
Walter wanted to knock on Devin's head. After getting all the information, he can't even answer one question. This man doesn't know the meaning of kindness. Cursing and cussing, he closed the door shut.
Driving home, when Devin made his way inside the bedroom, Leena flared up from the bed as if she was anticipating his return. ''Where did you go?''
''Small business,'' Devin smiled and leaned over for a quick kiss, and it seems Leena is in another world. ''What's wrong?''
Leena didnot answer him, for she knew Devin also knows what's troubling her. He tried to kill Devin, her world, her life. Without Devin, the world is nothing but a pit of darkness. If something happened to him on that day, Leena dreaded to imagine that.
''Sweetheart, it's not the time. Until we know his identity, we cannot make a move on him.'' He explained.
''Okay.'' Leena hugged him tightly.
''You are tired, Leena. Let's sleep. We will talk about this tomorrow.''
Like a spoiled kid, she widened her arms, telling him to carry her to the bed. ''Am I spoiling you too much?'' Before lifting her, he rubbed her nose and then took her to the bed.
''You carry Cutie, but not me?'' She pouted, staring at him angrily.
'''Too bad, my Sweetheart is jealous over a kid?'' A smile curved on his lips. It's a never-ending satisfaction when he is the subject of Leena's Jealousy.
''Jealousy? Not in my dictionary.'' She said with a carefree shrug. Rolling on top of him, Leena asked. ''Where exactly did you go on a business trip?''
''Didn't I tell you? It's Sweeden.'' He lied without batting an eye. If Leena had seen the dense forest, she would have run away when she saw the creepy home.
''Why didn't you wear your watch before going?'' She studied his face intently, but she couldn't make out anything from him.
''I forgot.'' This time he swallowed hard. Glad that he didnot carry the Watch. Otherwise, the creature would have eaten it by now.
Leena didnot question further. When Devin didnot pick up the call on that day, she tried to track his location through the GPS she installed in his Watch, and to her surprise, it was showing their home. Then she understood, he has not worn it. Leena felt like he has purposefully forgotten. Anyway, Devin is safe, and he is with her. She doesn't want to dwell deeper into the matter. They already have a lot to handle on their plate.
''I will kill you if you are hiding something from me.''
Devin fervently nodded his head. For now, he escaped from the demoness's wrath. He will tell the truth he learned when the time comes.
''Why did you put a lock to your mobile, Sweetheart?'' Devin asked, changing the subject. Since the day he knows Leena's beloved photographer is him, he tried to look into her mobile, but trespassing the security of a hacker's is highly impossible.
''My mobile, my wish.'' She stuck her tongue out at him and pulled the blanket on top of her head.
Her childish act made him laugh to the fullest. Devin decided to find out the name of her profile on his own. He tugged Leena, and automatically, she snuggled closer to him. Leaving all the burdens aside, both had a happy night together in their own bliss.
...
The following day, Devin woke up to a wild ringing on his mobile. He tried to ignore it, but the other party seemed to be very desperate. When he saw the contact number, it was Kurt. ''What is it?''
''I want to talk with you about Winter Brown. I found out something about the picture you sent me yesterday. Come to my home as soon as possible.''
''Alright,'' As soon as Devin got up, he left for Kurt's home when he got a text from him asking him to meet urgently.
''How do you know Winter?'' Kurt asked the moment Devin entered the house.
''Leena's friend.'' He said a matter of fact.
''I found something interesting about her,'' Kurt revealed.
