Chapter 38：Our Identities In This World

Lin Ke's attention was elsewhere for a long time, but the conversation between Anthony and Lucy had finally got to the important part.

"The role of a Settling Knight is simple. All they have to do is to be stationed in Werewolf Forest and make sure the Werewolves don't go anywhere. When they reach a certain age or have done something worthy, they'll be awarded a noble title."

Anthony was incredibly confident as he spoke. A noble title was something countless commoners desired. Furthermore, the Duchy of Sena was ridiculously powerful. The nobles from the Duchy of Sena were at least a rank higher when they traveled to other counties.

Even the lowest-ranked Knight Leader could enjoy the treatment of a Lord in other countries.

Lin Ke scratched his head as if he had missed out something. What on earth was a Settling Knight?

Furthermore, this world seemed to have quite a number of countries which made Lin Ke very tempted to check them out.

However, he sighed as he recalled his current situation. That was nothing but a dream.

Lin Ke's attention was elsewhere for a while and by the time he returned to his senses, he saw Lucy standing up and guiding Anthony out of the Elemental Tower.

Both parties were smiling and they seemed to be very satisfied with the conversation.

Lin Ke sighed softly as everything came to an end. Hence, he stood up and walked out of the Dormitory.

By the time he went downstairs, Dra and the rest were standing there. It was obvious that they were waiting for his arrival.

"My Lord, our problems are getting more and more troublesome."

Lucy walked towards Lin Ke as she saw him. "I believe you, too, know of our current dire situation."

"No, I don't know anything at all." Lin Ke smiled wryly, "I was checking the situation outside and the conversation had ended by the time I returned."

Lin Ke believed he should not tell them that he was messing with the people on guard outside and him daydreaming. It was simply too embarrassing. Hence, his excuse was that he was on guard with the situation outside.

Fortunately, these girls in front of him did not mind at all. Since Lin Ke had said that he did know the entire picture, they reorganized their information and reported to Lin Ke.

This forest was originally known as the Werewolf Forest. It was named as such because the number of Werewolves had increased drastically in the past century, affecting the villages within the area. It had even attacked the noble's Castle, causing fear among the commoners. From then on, the place was known as the Werewolf Forest.

According to the rumors, the number of Werewolves in Werewolf Forest was in the tens of thousands and the numbers simply frightened the Lords in the vicinity.

Hence, they turned towards their support, who was also someone they swore loyalty to. They requested help from Grand Duke Antalonin. As the Duchy of Sena's Grand Duke, Grand Duke Antalonin was worried about others as well. Hence, he sent out his decree to hire a huge number of Settling Knights.

Settling Knights were nobles-in-reserve. They had to possess powerful strength and a certain influence. It would be best that they had good luck as well. Only then they could guard an extended territory for a certain amount of years or obtain some achievement before they were rewarded with a true noble title.

All these while, the number of people turning a noble as a Settling Knight in the Duchy of Sena was incredibly little. However, it was also a place for a commoner to become a noble.

Hence, many people who were qualified to become a Settling Knight had arrived around the Werewolf Forest.

They recruited commoners, trained armies, and hired the strong. They were like a nail sticking firmly just outside of Werewolf Forest, killing every single Werewolf that ran out of the forest.

In fact, sometimes when they wanted to obtain enough achievement, these Settling Knights would team up and kill every Werewolf that was loitering at the border of the forest. They killed many Werewolves in order to reduce their number.

This way, they did not have to kill all of the Werewolves and could slowly reduce the number, forcing them to retreat. However, there was an accident in a horrifying war.

An army of Beastmen under the human traitor's leadership had discreetly entered the area from an isolated location. They planned to destroy the Duchy of Sena's capital city, but they encountered misfortune while they were on their journey there. They had no choice but retreat, especially when they heard that the Duchy's strongest squad, the Feathered Hawk Knight Squad had arrived.

The Beastmen started retreating frantically, killing and burning countless beings while doing so. They had specifically targeted the Settling Knights and noble's territory as they tried to destroy the Duchy of Sena's middle-level power.

Hence, the border of Werewolf Forest was dragged into the Beastmen's attacking range and the majority of the Settling Knights died. In fact, several nobles' Castles were raided as well.

The Feathered Hawk Knight Squad was enraged by this so much that some righteous knights that lived slightly further away had even left their servants behind and headed towards areas that the Beastmen were terrorizing alone. When the Beastmen saw them, they scattered and retreated.

They had already achieved their goal. Although not all of them were able to return, the Duchy of Sena would not be able to recover from this weakened state for the next few decades.

This would be the best time for the Beastmen to rise!

Lin Ke instantly recalled the Beastmen army that Dra encountered the other day. Perhaps they were one of the armies. 

If they were to attack him, he feared that he would be helpless against them back then.

Fortunately, the Beastmen did not dare to cause any trouble and retreated swiftly due to the Feathered Hawk Knight Squad chasing them from behind.

Cold sweat started appearing on Lin Ke's head. He was literally saved by this.

This was the general big picture of the situation. What came next was something much more urgent.

"We're outside of the Werewolf Forest and the shortest time needed to reach the closest human civilization is a day." Lucy looked at Lin Ke as she opened her mouth. "By horse."

Outside of the Werewolf Forest lived the most ferocious group of Werewolves, the Vengeful Werewolves. They were the ones that kept attacking Lin Ke.

These Werewolves were incredibly vengeful. They would endlessly attack those that killed their kind.

For the past few years, countless Settling Knights died under the ambush from these Vengeful Werewolves.

Now that Lin Ke had killed so many Werewolves that day, he could imagine how troublesome the days ahead would be.

The entire tribe of Vengeful Werewolves would certainly wage war on him endlessly.

Their numbers could possibly exceed tens of thousands.

Furthermore, the Werewolves that would be attacking them could be much stronger than these average Werewolves that attacked him that day. More ferocious Werewolves would attack him and the intensity of the battle would increase greatly.

One example would be those Super Werewolves that were on par with Dra's strength. The reason they did not appear before Lin Ke was because they had gone towards Anthony instead.

If these Werewolves were to come at him simultaneously, Lin Ke and his group would certainly have a tough fight.

Although the Elemental Tower would not be destroyed, the end result would certainly be bad.

"There's one more thing, which is also the most important bit." Lucy did not open her mouth as Kara, who had been standing beside her said indifferently. "It's our identities in this world!"
