As the head of a company who had always been working hard, Cassandra burned the midnight oil taking care of tasks for hiring and recruitment. There was so much to be done. She barely noticed that it was already midnight.

It was not only her duties as a president that motivated her. Now, she often thought about the child in her belly. Whatever she did today would affect its future.

Alone, Cassandra walked alongside the street. As it was already very late, she decided to take a shortcut instead of the main road.

As she was walking, the sound of revving motor filled the air. It got louder and louder until instinctively, she moved to the side of the road. The sound grew louder, and she realized one terrifying thing: the vehicle was deliberately going straight at her.

Alarmed, she turned and found two men wearing helmets driving a motorcycle approaching her fast.

She wanted to dodge but it was too late. It hit her squarely in a blink of an eye.

A keen pain shot from her abdomen and radiated all over her body.

She sank to the floor clutching her stomach. Paralyzed by pain, she was unable to move or do anything as the two men fled the scene.

Everything around her blurred out. At that moment, nothing seemed real to her but the pain that got worse every second.

Suddenly, she felt something come out from under her dress, wetting her lower body. With a trembling hand, she reached down and felt a warm, viscous substance that reeked of the stench of blood.

Although the light of the street lamp was dim, she could see the blot of bright, red blood getting bigger and bigger underneath. Horrified, she watched helplessly.

A?sudden?dizziness?came over her. The last thing she remembered before completely losing her consciousness was the pain that enveloped her. In a matter of seconds, everything around her faded and the darkness took over her.

Cassandra blinked her eyes several times when she regained consciousness.

Opening her eyes, she found that everything around her was white --the wall, the ceiling, the curtain, and the bed, all were spotlessly white.

'Am I in the hospital how?' she wondered.

She suddenly remembered everything that happened before she passed out. Almost involuntarily, she touched her belly in horror.

"Finally, you are awake, Cassandra!"

A voice came from the door which sounded very pleased. She looked to see its source and found Dylon walking in.

"How did I get here?"

she asked him, still in a daze.

"A passerby discovered you and sent you here. Luckily, I was on the shift in the Emergency department. Thank goodness,"

Dylon explained, trying to sound as casual as possible while he set the lunch box on her bedside table.

Then, there was a long pause before Cassandra finally asked the question Dylon least wanted to answer.

"I lost my child, didn't I? I felt the blood before I fainted,"

Cassandra said in a low voice. She was only on her second month. She knew very well that the first trimester was a very sensitive time for pregnancy. What was more, she had no idea how long she had been lying on the road

me to waste. Surely, he was not about to let that happen.

"Actually, l was planning to talk to you about that, Mr. Ke,"

Rufus replied, frowning slightly. Charlie, however, was quite surprised with how Rufus addressed him.

People in the Dark Night Group addressed Charlie as 'Mr. Ke' as a way to show their respect given his position in the group. But unlike others, Rufus had always called him 'Charlie'.

As an ancient Chinese saying goes, he who is a teacher for a day is the father for a lifetime. Ever since Rufus took Charlie as his mentor, he called him by his first name because of their close relationship, which was almost akin to that of a father and son.

So when he suddenly called him 'Mr. Ke', Charlie suddenly felt uncomfortable.

'What on earth was Rufus going to say?' he wondered. 'Could it be that he doesn't want to stay and work for this group?'

"I know that you don't want to stay here", Charlie sighed. "But as you know, we have given a lot to train you to be an excellent businessman. Besides, our group is now having a hard time. Above all things, Clark is simply missing, as if he has disappeared. I see no reason to trust him. You are the only one I can put my faith in,"

Charlie said as he put his hand on Rufus's shoulder and looked at him with sincerity.

"Thank you for your trust and kindness, Mr. Ke," Rufus bowed his head slightly. "I understand. But as I said before, I don't want to be in a senior position."

Rufus was telling the truth. What he wanted was never to be raised above others or to be given senior status. All these years, he had been working hard in building his career for only one purpose: to take revenge on Horace.

He must let him pay the price for abandoning him and his mother and make him see how his abandoned son manage to ruin his life, little by little.

"Sorry, but I have to go back," he concluded. "Only after doing what has to be done will I have time to consider other things. I set myself a goal many years ago and I will not give it up easily."

Rufus clenched his fists firmly.
