With a confident smile, Cassandra rubbed her cheek against her mother's shoulder. After hearing her explanation, Edith snorted and turned her head aside, maintaining her displeasure at the matter.

Cassandra's reputation had already been damaged because she had gotten together with Rufus. The conflict between Amanda and her worsened the situation. Although Edith could understand Cassandra's point of view, the outsiders wouldn't.

Every time Edith went outside, people would secretly point at her, uttering awful, vile things about her family behind her back. Their disrespectful gazes would diminish her, leaving her melancholy.

As these scenes came to her mind, Edith's eyes turned red in anger.

"Cassandra, honey, I know that you're a kind-hearted girl, but you can't let these things slide every time they occur. By being ignorant, you're only enabling those people to bully you. I don't want you to live your life like that. What kind of life would that be?"

The muffled sobs wracked against Edith's chest as she spoke. After all, it was natural for a mother's heart to bleed for her children.

Cloris hadn't said a word since she stepped into the house, but she stood by with her ears open the whole time. Having realized that her mother was not likely to calm down any time soon, she walked towards her and stood by her other side. Mirroring her elder sister, she, too, tugged at Edith's arm in a childish way.

"Mom, if Cassandra doesn't want to go through all that trouble, then please have faith in her decision. This family has gone through a lot and now is finally at peace. Let's just count our blessings for what we have. She just wants to leave that horrible chapter behind her so she can look forward into the future without being held back. Eventually, all the gossips and rumors will fade

“Let's go and register our marriage on your birthday!”

Marrying Daniel should have been her best birthday gift, but everything was ruined the moment when she caught him sleeping with another woman on the day before her birthday.

“He’s going to marry that woman! She... was my best friend!"

openly people there express their love in public. It's just a kiss!"

Rufus said. He was quite surprised, which his eyes failed to conceal.

"Do I have to live my life the way they do because I've studied abroad? I don't think so. I could never do this in front of my family,"

Cassandra said, biting her down lip slightly.

"Oh please! Where is that fiery passion you showed me in Rome? Do you remember that?"

Rufus lowered his voice on purpose, reminding her of what they had done after drinking on the night they first met each other.

"Shut up! I was really drunk and you know that!"

Cassandra gasped. She was so nervous that even her ears turned red. Rufus could not help but chuckle at her.

"If that's the case, then I think we need to have a drink tonight. If that's what it will take for you to kiss me, then so be it,"

Rufus whispered in a coltish voice, so as to challenge Cassandra for fun.

"Oh no! I'm not drinking tonight!"

Cassandra turned her head away from him, pretending to be annoyed.

"Let's have a drink in order to celebrate our wedding,"

Rufus said in an extremely soft voice while gazing at Cassandra with his gentle eyes. "Come on! I know you want to!"
