Tang continued in a hurt voice, "Did it ever bother you? Did it even register that your son has been living a polite lie for the past six years? Now no more. To hell with it…to hell with all of you. I don't really care whether you believe that the angelic looking Mei Zhen is capable of bringing harm to others or not. I have the proof and I will produce it in front of the authorities when the time comes."
Mrs. Xie rushed towards her son and tried to calm him down. His father had turned pale at the onslaught of those harsh words. Mei Zhen resembled a deer caught in the headlights.
"He is lying…" she said softly first.
And then raised her voice, "he is lying. Don't believe a word of what that man, Fu says. You have no idea the kind of twisted mind he has. I already told you that I met him accidently in Beijing. I admit it that it was my fault that I told him about you and Jia Li. But that's because I was feeling cut off from your life. You didn't even recognise me, refused to speak with me except as a stranger on that day at the hospital. So I got carried away in my jealousy. But I never knew what his plan was nor did I know that you were in there with Jia Li at the time."
Tang pounced upon her words immediately, "so you didn't know whether I was in her house or not, but you did know that Fu was there. At least you admit that much. Then, my next question to you is - why did you call the police, if you didn't know what his intention was? He could have simply been visiting his ex-wife, right? Why did it warrant a phone call to the authorities?"
She looked at him in surprise. She hadn't told anyone that she had panicked when it had been too long since he had gone in. She had finally left an anonymous tip on the police hotline, fearing the worst.
"We found out about it when we went to the station the next day," Ethan spoke up finally.
"The police were trying to identify the other person apart from me who had informed them about it. But you had called from another number and they couldn't trace it to any of the involved parties. Tang, then put a private detective to find out the real owner of that number. We got to know about it on the way to Shanghai that it was finally traced back to you. The call informing us about it, came in front of you only," he informed her coolly.
Her face lost whatever colour that had been remaining.
"You were…you were investigating ME behind my back? Fu is the one to be blamed for all of this. Why am I under suspicion?" she asked in bewilderment.
Tang was the one who spoke up, "ever since Fu told me that you were an equal partner in the plan, naturally, I suspected you."
"He is lying. I told you that he is playing you, messing with your head. He doesn't want you to have a happy married life. He resents you, that's why he is trying to create misunderstandings between us," she pleaded.
"Is it so? So the cctv footage that we have requested for, across Jia Li's house won't show us anything different from what you are claiming?" Tang pressed on.
The truth was that he had no proof, no footage and no confession from Fu. But his instinct was screaming and telling him to push ahead, even if he had to bluff his way through. Since the time that he had started to suspect her being the trigger for the incident, his anger had been building up slowly. He was having a tough time trying to keep it under control. He knew it was imperative for her to confess to her actions, else they had no chance of ever proving her guilty in front of everyone, and for that, he needed to stay calm, icy cold.
"I think enough has been said for now. Let's not make the matters so bad that reconciliation can't find its way here," Mrs. Xie said in a low voice, addressing her son
But he was relentless in his attack, deaf to everything else.
"Now can you blame me for seeking a divorce from you? I mean who would want to live with someone who can stoop to such a low level just because of her petty insecurity?" he continued goading her with his cruel words.
Mei Zhen had had enough playing the subservient victim. Her infamous temper had shown mighty patience till now. Enough was enough…
"Just who do you think you are? A pretentious upstart family with new money, you dare to raise a finger at me!" she shouted at him
